The better understanding of physiological and environmental factors that determine optimal food conversion efficiencies is of major interest for the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas for which the strong increase of aquaculture has been correlated in France with a decrease in productivity due to competition between aquatic species for limited food supplies at grow-out sites. To investigate the non-neutrality of the polymorphism of amylase, a key enzyme for carbohydrate assimilation, in oyster physiology, we report in the present paper the growth and survival measurement of amylase genotypes within five bi-parental C. gigas families, bred to be polymorph at the two PCR-RFLP amylase markers, and reared over one year under standard culture conditions in two...

Comparaison de l'évolution et du contrôle de l'activité des amylases et des protéases au cours du développement larvaire et des premiers stades juvéniles chez palaemon serratus, macrobrachium rosenbergii et penaeus japonicus (crustacea decapoda) ArchiMer

Amylase and protease activities were followed during the larval development of 3 species of Crustacea Decapoda. In Palaemon serratus, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Penaeus japonicus the increase in the activity is greater for amylases than for proteases. These changes appear mainly at the end of the nauplius and mysis stages in Penaeus and during the mysis stages in Palaemon and Macrobrachium. They are related to modification of nutrition and to the appearance of an hormonal control.

Quelques données nouvelles concernant l'influence de la lumière sur la biologie de Palaemon serratus ArchiMer

Les études réalisées dans notre Laboratoire ont pour but d'aider à une meilleure connaissance de la biologie et de la physiologie des espèces de Crustacés Décapodes susceptibles de faire l'objet d'opérations d'élevage, en considérant la possibilité d'une aquaculture intensive. Les résultats obtenus permettront dans une certaine mesure d'aider à mieux comprendre les variations du métabolisme et de la biochimie des animaux étudiés, en fonction des modifications du milieu extérieur. L'écologie de ces animaux sera ainsi mieux connue, et leur élevage, facilité.

Starch supplementation modulates amylase enzymatic properties and amylase B mRNA level in the digestive gland of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

In the oyster Crassostrea gigas consumption-related traits, amylase properties and growth were found to be linked through genotypes that differed for polymorphism in the two amylase genes AMYA and AMYB. Modulation of AMYA mRNA level had already been observed in response to food availability, whereas the functional role of AMYB was still unknown. To improve knowledge about the regulation of amylase expression in C. gigas and the respective roles of the two genes, we made an assay of amylase expression at mRNA and enzymatic levels in the digestive gland of oysters that had received dietary supplements of starch. After 18 days, a significant increase of translatable mRNA for AMYB was observed, with a correlated increase in Michaelis-Menten constant Km values...

Zinc-hemocyanin binding in the hemolymph of carcinus maenas (crustacea, decapoda) ArchiMer

1. A quantitative and electrophoretic study of copper and zinc in hemolymph of the crustacea decapoda, Carcinus maenas, has been carried out. 2. Most of the copper was linked with hemocyanin.3. All copper-binding proteins are hemocyanin.4. Zinc belongs to three different compartments: more than 68% is linked with hemocyanin; about 10% is shown in the fraction containing blood cells, lipids and carotenoids; 15% is present in the hemolymph under a soluble and dialysable form. 5. Specific zinc-binding protein has not been found out in the serum of Carcinus maenas.6. Zinc linked with hemocyanin is found on high molecular weight protein fractions only. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
