Good Environmental Status (GES) for descriptor 8 of MSFD is reached when concentrations of contaminants are at levels not giving rise to pollution effects. According to the decision 2017/848/CE, descriptor 8 is defined by four criteria: concentration in the relevant matrices (sediment, biota) (D8C1), effects of chronic contamination to the marine organisms (D8C2), duration and spatial extent of acute pollution events (D8C3), effects of acute contamination to the marine organisms (D8C4). The GES for descriptor 8 is assessed at the level of four marine subregions (SRM), including: Channel – North Sea (MMN), Celtics Seas (MC), Bay of Biscay (GdG) and the Occidental Mediterranean Sea (MO). In order to achieve GES, each indicator of descriptor 8 should respect... |

According to Commission Decision (EU) 2017/848 under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), EU Member States (MS) shall consider, in their Descriptor 8 primary criterion (D8C1) assessments, the WFD Priority Substances (PS) and River Basin Specific Pollutants (RBSP) within coastal and territorial waters and also beyond territorial waters if these still may give rise to pollution effects. Some WFD PS might not be relevant for the marine environment in the open sea and, consequently, might be excluded from MSFD monitoring beyond the territorial waters. MS have expressed the need for a framework for the deselection of WFD PS from monitoring under the MSFD, in order to save resources. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), collaborating... |

Ocean acidification (OA) is a major global driver that leads to substantial changes in seawater carbonate chemistry, with potentially serious consequences for calcifying organisms. Marine shelled molluscs are ecologically and economically important species, providing essential ecosystem services and food sources for other species. Due to their physiological characteristics and their use of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to build their shells, molluscs are among the most vulnerable invertebrates with regard to OA, with early developmental stages being particularly sensitive to pH changes. This study investigated the effects of CO2-induced OA on juveniles of the European abalone Haliotis tuberculata, a commercially important gastropod species. Six-month-old... |

Investigating the drivers of fish assemblage trophic structure is a critical question, in order to better understand ecosystem functioning, predict the effects of perturbations and implement integrated management of exploited marine ecosystems. Ecosystemic surveys enabled the determination of the trophic structure of the fish assemblages in three French marine ecosystems, namely the Eastern English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lions, through the simultaneous collection of qualitative (stable isotopes and energy content) and quantitative (biomass) data. In the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lions, pelagic primary production supported at least 80% of the fish biomass production, and explained the dominance of pelagic species, but with... |

Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the marine environment Their toxicity is mainly linked to the ability of marine species to biotransform them into reactive metabolites PAHs are thus often detected at trace levels in animal tissues For biomonitoring purposes this findings have two main consequences (i) the determination of the PAH tissue concentration is not suitable for the evaluation of individual exposure to PAHs (ii) It can explain sometimes the lack of correlations obtained with relevant markers of toxicity such as genotoxicity biomarkers The aim of the present study was to better investigate the link between PAH exposure and genotoxicity in marine flatfish During a laboratory experiment juvenile soles were exposed... |

The benzo[a]pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon known to be genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic in higher vertebrates. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the enzymatic and genotoxic effects of BaP in a benthic fish species, Solea solea. Sole hepatocytes were exposed to BaP in order to measure the modulation of ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) activity and the DNA strand breaks induced by BaP metabolism. Exposures were performed in both culture flasks and microplate wells in order to check for the possible miniaturization of the exposure system. Moreover, sole liver microsomes were exposed to BaP in the presence of standard DNA in order to assess the potential formation of DNA adducts in sole. The results demonstrated the ability of... |
