The non-glutinous rainfed rice promising line IR77954-28-36-3 was first cross at the International Rice Research Institute in 1998. Selected and back cross at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center between 1999-2004. Evaluated yield potential and environmental adaptation in the Upper North between 2005-2012. Average grain yield was 12-22% higher than KDML105 in research centers, flowering date between 12-22 October, 117-162 centimeter height, good perform in farmer fields, resistance to blast disease in seedling stage. Good response to nitrogen fertilizer, physical chemical and cooking quality like KDML105. Adopted by farmers and consumers in the activity of preference analysis by farmer participatory rice varieties selection.

Promising line IR77954-28-36-3 was first developed at the International Rice Research Institute in 1998. Selection and backcrossing were conducted at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center during 1999-2004. Evaluation for yield potential and environmental adaptation was carried out in the upper northern region during 2005-2012. Results from experimental fields in research centers showed that this line gave average grain yield of 12-22% higher than KDML105, flowering date ranging from 11-24 October, 107-172 centimeter height, resistance to blast disease, good response to nitrogen fertilizer, and cooking quality similar to KDML105. Zoning of rice production potential in Thai rice area has been conducted from 2000 to 2013. The objectives of the project were 1) to define the potential of rice area in Thailand in term of soil suitability and productivity, 2) to create map of rice production zoning with appropriate recommendation. Methodology to run the project consisted of secondary data collection, field survey, crop cutting, field experiment, and mapping. The research found that total of 12.6 M ha of rice areas in Thailand it was suitable for rice production about 8.2 M ha. Rice soil was more fertile in the central plain as compared to other region. Aromatic rice is a specific group of rice having high price in the world rice market. Fragrant trait is therefore included in the principal goal for rice production and improvement. A recessive gene on chromosome 8 has been elucidated to be homology with the gene encoded for betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH2). In fragrant rice this gene was mutated by 8 bp deletion in exon 7 resulting in accumulation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP). In this study, BADEX7-5 primer which is specific for fragrant gene (badh2) was tested by conventional PCR and Real-time PCR. “Beu Ner Moo” rainfed aromatic highland rice varieties were planted on rice terrace by hilltribe Pwakin-nyaw (Karen). The name means aromatic rice which were selected by Pwakin-nyaw farmers long time ago and still grown as a special varieties until now. Due to their impurity, pure line selection was the breeding methodology and geographical indications (GI) was the way to increase their value. There were three steps to develop Beu Ner Moo. 1) Collecting 48 Beu Ner Moo rice varieties from 4 districts of Chiang Mai including Mae Ai, Chiang Dao, Chai Prakan and Mae Chaem. 2) Purifying Beu Ner Moo rice by pure line selection according to their morphological characters and can be classified into 10 groups. “Buer Ner Moo” a rain phase aromatic Highland rice variety, was planted on rice terrace that a hilltribe who called themselves Pwakin-nyaw (Kariang) was the owner. CCS06039-KLG-8-3-5-1 is a non-glutinous, non-photoperiod sensitive and aromatic rice line derived from a cross between PSBRc54 and IR22. The single cross hybridization was made in 2006 at Bang Khen Rice Experiment Station (now Chachoengsao Rice Research. F2 to F5 progenies were selected at Klong Luang Rice Reseach Center during 2007-2008. The line CCS06039-KLG-8-3-5-1 has an erect and moderately strong culm; 110 cm height on transplanting and 105 cm height on germinated seed broadcasting; 117 days maturity on transplanting and 106 days maturity on germinated seed broadcasting. The major rainfed rice growing area in the Lower North region of Thailand has good soil fertility. It has high potential to produce good rice varieties including aromatic rice. However, at present, Nahng Mon S-4 is the only aromatic, intermediate amylose content rice variety being officially released. Therefore, a selection for an aromatic, intermediate amylose content, high yield and resistant to major disease and insect pest is needed to provide the alternative for farmers.
