Detection of Salmonella spp. by Conventional Bacteriology and by Quantitative Polymerase-Chain Reaction in Commercial Egg Structures Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Moraes,DMC; Duarte,SC; Bastos,TSA; Rezende,CLG; Leandro,NSM; Café,MB; Stringhini,JH; Andrade,MA.
Abstract Conventional bacteriology techniques and quantitative polymerase-chain reaction (qPCR) were applied to the eggshell, albumen, and yolk of washed and unwashed commercial white and brown eggs, to detect Salmonella spp. Pooled samples of eggshells, albumen, and yolk of white and brown eggs were collected at the poultry house and at the egg-storage room. Salmonella spp. was detected by conventional bacteriology in 5.4% (21/387) of analyzed samples and in 16% (68/387) by qPCR. In the 114 unwashed white eggs samples of eggshell, albumen and yolk, the bacterium was identified in 2.6% of the eggs (3/114) by conventional bacteriology and in 13.2% (15/114) by qPCR. In the 90 samples of washed eggs, 6.7% (6/90) were contaminated as detected by conventional...

Development beyond the gastrula stage and digestive organogenesis in the apple-snail Pomacea canaliculata (Architaenioglossa, Ampullariidae) Biocell
Koch,E.; Winik,B.C.; Castro-Vazquez,A..
Development of Pomacea canaliculata from the gastrula stage until the first day after hatching is described. Trochophore embryos are developed after gastrulation, showing the prototroch as a crown of ciliated orange-brownish cells. However, no true veliger embryos are formed, since the prototroch does not fully develop into a velum. Afterward, the connection between the fore- and midgut is permeated and the midgut becomes full of the pink-reddish albumen, which is stored into a central archenteron's lake, from where it is accumulated into the large cells forming the midgut wall ("giant cells"). Electron microscopy of giant cells in late embryos showed that albumen is engulfed by large endocytic vesicles formed between the irregular microvilli at the top of...

Different trace mineral sources and recommendations in the performance and quality of eggs from Dekalb White layers R. Bras. Zootec.
Pereira,Gabrielle Catarine Castro; Costa,Fernando Guilherme Perazzo; Silva,José Humberto Vilar da; Pascoal,Leonardo Augusto Fonseca; Lima,Cristina Aparecida Barbosa de; Bittencourt,Letícia Cardoso; Sechinato,Alexandre da Silva; Hermes,Rafael Gustavo.
ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the performance and egg quality of lightweight laying hens supplemented with a high biological value mineral, carbo-amino-phospho-chelates (CAPC), compared with inorganic minerals (sulfates), at different recommended values. A total of 320 Dekalb White hens, between 53 and 77 weeks of age, were distributed in a completely randomized design into two treatments, 10 replicates of 16 birds each. The treatments consisted of a reference diet formulated according to breed manual recommendations, in which one group was supplemented with a trace mineral source, CAPC (Cu, 8.6; Fe, 43.7; Mn, 56.4; Se, 0.34; and Zn, 43.7 mg/kg) and the other with a sulfate source, using the levels recommended in the breed manual (Cu, 8; Fe, 60; Mn,...

Effects of heat treatments and edible shell coatings on egg quality after storage at room temperature Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
OLIVEIRA,Cristina Henrique; BOIAGO,Marcel Manente; GUARAGNI,Andréia.
Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal treatments using different water temperatures and immersion times, as well as the application of eggshell coatings using edible materials on eggshell quality after storage for 4 weeks at room temperature (22.8 ± 4.4 °C). A total of 180 brown fresh eggs were distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and five replicates of six eggs each. The treatments consisted of a control group without any treatment (T1), three groups treated thermally: 56 °C/32 minutes (T2); 56 °C/20 minutes (T3); 56 °C/10 minutes (T4); and two groups with gelatin 2% (T5) and 5% NaCl solution (T6). After storage, it was found that the heat treatments at 56 °C for 10, 20 and 32 minutes...

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to verify whether the inclusion of other ingredients in the diet of laying hens could interfere with the traceability of bovine meat and bone meal (BMBM) in eggs through stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis. Two hundred and fifty-six white laying hens were used and randomly distributed into eight treatments composed of: CONTROL: control diet; GLUTEN: control diet + corn gluten; YEAST: control diet + yeast; GLUTEN + YEAST: control diet + corn gluten + yeast; BMBM: control diet + 4.5 % BMBM; BMBM + GLUTEN: control diet + corn gluten + 4.5 % BMBM; BMBM + YEAST: control diet + yeast + 4.5 % BMBM; BMBM + GLUTEN + YEAST: control diet + corn gluten + yeast + 4.5 % BMBM. The isotopic results were subjected to multivariate...

Studies on carbon-13 turnover in eggs and blood of commercial layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Denadai,JC; Ducatti,C; Pezzato,AC; Carrijo,AS; Caldara,FR; Oliveira,RP.
This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of diets containing different isotopic values of carbon-13 turnover on the half-life of egg (yolk + albumen), yolk and albumen individually, and blood of poultry using delta‰13C isotopic variation. Commercial layers fed four experimental isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets (RC4, RC3, RMC4 and RMC3) containing different isotopic values, during an experimental period of 56 days. Turnover of the studied tissues was influenced by the experimental diets. Blood and albumen were more influenced by dietary treatments as compared to egg and yolk. The RMC3 diet induced better performance (better feed intake and higher egg production) due faster rate of carbon substitution than the RC4 diet, and lower half-life for egg...

What determines hatchling weight: breeder age or incubated egg weight? Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Traldi,AB; Menten,JFM; Silva,CS; Rizzo,PV; Pereira,PWZ; Santarosa,J.
Two experiments were carried out to determine which factor influences weight at hatch of broiler chicks: breeder age or incubated egg weight. In Experiment 1, 2340 eggs produced by 29- and 55-week-old Ross® broiler breeders were incubated. The eggs selected for incubation weighed one standard deviation below and above average egg weight. In Experiment 2, 2160 eggs weighing 62 g produced by breeders of both ages were incubated. In both experiments, 50 additional eggs within the weight interval determined for each breeder age were weighed, broken, and their components were separated and weighed. At hatch, hatchlings were sexed and weighed, determining the average initial weight of the progeny of each breeder age. Data were analyzed using the Analyst program...
