Brazil is the second biggest worldwide producer of cookies and there are many varieties in the market; however, only a few are gluten-free. The objectives of this work were to formulate two gluten-free cookies added with iron, peanut or almond, and analyze their physicochemical, chromatic and sensory properties. Moisture, instrumental color (L*, a*, b* and C*), ash, proteins, lipids, iron, carbohydrates (estimated by difference), and water activity were determined. The acceptance of the products was assessed by 115 untrained taste panelists using a five-point hedonic scale. The antioxidant properties of different almond cultivars (cv.), either regional (Casanova, Duro Italiano, Molar, Orelha de Mula and Pegarinhos cv.) or commercial (Ferraduel, Ferranhês, Ferrastar and Guara cv.) were evaluated through several chemical and biochemical assays: DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, inhibition of b-carotene bleaching, inhibition of oxidative hemolysis in erythrocytes, induced by 2,20-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AAPH), and inhibition of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formation in brain cells, all used as models for the lipid peroxidation damage in biomembranes. Antioxidant potential of chestnut (Castanea sativa L.) and almond (Prunus dulcis L.) by-products. IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The antioxidant properties of almond green husks (Cvs. Duro Italiano, Ferraduel, Ferranhês, Ferrastar and Orelha de Mula), chestnut skins and chestnut leaves (Cvs. Aveleira, Boa Ventura, Judia and Longal) were evaluated through several chemical and biochemical assays in order to provide a novel strategy to stimulate the application of waste products as new suppliers of useful bioactive compounds, namely antioxidants. All the assayed by-products revealed good antioxidant properties, with very low EC50 values (lower than 380 μg/mL), particularly for lipid peroxidation inhibition (lower than 140 μg/mL). Economic Evaluation of Action Plans for Pathogen Control in Almonds AgEcon

The Almond Board of California proposed to require that all almonds shipped from California handlers be treated to achieve a 4-log reduction in the pathogen that leads to salmonellosis. The Assurance program is expected to add several million dollars to transactions costs in the almond marketing system. There is a wide range in these cost estimates, mainly because of the difficulty in predicting how many firms will be interested in applying for the program.

Evaluation of seasonal antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds in stems and leaves of some almond (Prunus amygdalus L.) varieties Biol. Res.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the seasonal changes of total antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds in samples taken from leaves (April, July, October) and stems (April, July, October, January) of some almond (Prunus amygdalus L.) varieties (Nonpareil, Ferragnes and Texas). RESULTS: It was indicated that antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds in leaves and stems of Nonpareil, Ferragnes and Texas showed seasonal differences. Antioxidant activity IC50 of these varieties reached the highest value in April for leaves whereas in October for stems. Investigation of energy inputs and CO2 emission for almond production using sensitivity analysis in Iran CIGR Journal

The objective of this study is to examine input–output energy and CO2 emission of almond production in Shahrekord region, Iran. This article presents a comprehensive picture of the current status of energy consumption and some energy indices like energy use efficiency, energy productivity, specific energy and net energy gain. Sensitivity analysis of energy was carried out using the marginal physical productivity (MPP) technique. For this propose data were collected from 29almond farms using a face to face questionnaire. The results revealed that total energy input for almond production was found to be 106.61GJ/ha where the electricity was the major energy consumer (59.58%). El propósito de esta investigación fue estudiar las relaciones ambientales de disponibilidad de humedad, con las características anatómicas del sistema de conducción de agua y estomático, en cinco genotipos de duraznos mexicanos con diferentes orígenes (Jalatzingo y Misantla, Veracruz; Temascaltepec, México; Tulancingo, Oaxaca; Sombrerete, Zacatecas), un almendro y el portainjerto Nemaguard. Fueron caracterizados anatómicamente brotes, hojas y estomas de plántulas de seis meses de edad, mediante 25 caracteres.
