Oligomannose-coated liposome (OML)-based vaccines have been reported to induce Th1-based immunity against entrapped antigens in immunized animals and to show protective effects against several protozoal diseases. In the present study, we produced a recombinant Babesia rodhaini ribosomal phosphoprotein P0 (rBrP0) that showed immunological cross reactivity with another rodent Babesia parasite, B. microti. We evaluated the efficacy of vaccination with OML-entrapped rBrP0 on B. rodhaini and B. microti infections in mice. Prior immunization with the OML-based rBrP0 vaccine, or with a Freund’s adjuvant-based rBrP0 vaccine, failed to demonstrate any protective effect against lethal infection with B. rodhaini, but the OML-based vaccine did induce protective... |

ABSTRACT: Canine babesiosis is a common haemoparasitosis in Brazil. Caused by parasites of the genus Babesia, it is transmitted by ixodid ticks and affects domestic and wild canids. The objective of this study was to verify the prevalence of Babesia species (spp.) using molecular methods in dogs living in urban and rural areas of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, and to identify the main factors associated with infection. A total of 407 samples from 407 dogs were evaluated using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, among which Babesia species (spp.) was amplified in 10 (2.5%). Although, no statistical association was found among the variables studied (p>0.05), greater positivity was observed in dogs<1 year of age, male sex, those with free... |

In order to determine the occurrence of transplacentary transmission of Theileria equi in equine neonates, 50 foals of the Lusitano breed, both colts and fillies, along with their respective mothers were evaluated shortly after parturition. Total blood samples were collected from the mothers and the neonates within the first five hours after parturition for the detection of Theileria equi, through use of the RT-PCR technique. The detection kit based on the intercalating dye of DNA SYBERgreen was used. A total of 46% of the mares presented a positive result for Theileria equi and 54% presented negative ones, while 66% of the foals presented positive results, seeing as 73.9% of them were born from also positive mothers. The remaining 34% of foals presented... |

A total of 310 blood smears were collected from sheep of the Livestock Experiment Station, Qadirabad, Sahiwal district, Pakistan, and surrounding areas. The samples were examined microscopically and 30 (9.67%) were positive for babesiosis. The animals were divided into two groups (A and B) for chemotherapy. Group A sheep were treated with diminazene diaceturate while group B animals received imidocarb dipropionate. Drug efficacy was determined by negative blood smear examination. Diminazene diaceturate effectiveness against babesiosis was 80% while that of imidocarb dipropionate was 100%. Hematological studies revealed a significant decrease in hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrit values for Babesia-positive animals compared to healthy controls. |

Babesia spp. are major hemoprotozoan parasites in animals. Exoantigens, which are soluble antigens released by the parasites during their asexual development, have been successfully applied for the development of a vaccine against babesiosis. In this study, we examined the ability of exoantigens to induce protective immunity in mice against a rodent Babesia parasite, Babesia rodhaini. The BALB/c mice immunized with the blood plasma fraction of B. rodhaini-infected mice (B. rodhaini exoantigens) showed a significant decrease in the lethal rate when challenged with B. rodhaini. Western blot analysis with anti-B. rodhaini exoantigen immune serum specifically detected at least eleven proteins in the lysate of B. rodhaini-infected erythrocytes. Next, a cDNA... |
