Diversity of propanil-degrading bacteria isolated from rice rhizosphere and their potential for plant growth promotion. Repositório Alice
PROCOPIO, A. R. L.; PROCOPIO, R. E. L.; PIZZIRANI-KLEINER, A. A.; MELO, I. S. de.
Abstract: The herbicide propanil has long been used in rice production in southern Brazil. Bacteria isolated from contaminated soils in Massaranduba, Santa Catarina, Brazil, were found to be able to grow in the presence of propanil, using this compound as a carbon source. Thirty strains were identified as Pseudomonas (86.7%), Serratia (10.0%), and Acinetobacter (3.3%), based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA. Little genetic diversity was found within species, more than 95% homology, suggesting that there is selective pressure to metabolize propanil in the microbial community. Two strains of Pseudomonas (AF7 and AF1) were selected in bioreactor containing chemotactic growth medium, with the highest degradation activity of propanil exhibited by strain...

Effects of nitrate injection on microbial enhanced oil recovery and oilfield reservoir souring. Repositório Alice
SILVA, M. L. B. da; SOARES, H. M.; FURIGO JÚNIOR, A.; SCHMIDELL, W.; CORSEIUL, H. X..
Column experiments were utilized to investigate the effects of nitrate injection on sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhibition and microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). An indigenous microbial consortium collected from the produced water of a Brazilian offshore field was used as inoculum. The presence of 150 mg/L volatile fatty acids (VFA´s) in the injection water contributed to a high biological electron acceptors demand and the establishment of anaerobic sulfate-reducing conditions. Continuous injection of nitrate (up to 25 mg/L) for 90 days did not inhibit souring. Contrariwise, in nitrogen-limiting conditions, the addition of nitrate stimulated the proliferation of ?-Proteobacteria (including SRB) and the associated sulfide concentration....

Isolation and characterization of endophytic bacteria of coffee plants and their potential in caffeine degradation. Repositório Alice
NUNES, F. V.; MELO, I. S. de.
The plant kingdom is colonized by a diverse array of endophytic bacteria, which form a non-pathogenic relationship with their hosts. Endophytic bacteria may confer benefits to the plant, and the benefits may be reciprocal, resulting in an enhanced symbiotic system for specifíc plant characteristics. The objective of this study was to isolate endophytic bacteria from coffee {Coffea arabica and C. robusta) and evaluate their potential in degrading caffeine. The isolates were identified by partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis and by FAME and the analysis of biodegradation of caffeine was carried out by HPLC. As a result, 252 bacteria! strains were isolated, with most of them belonging to the species Bacillus lentimorbus, B. meguterium, B. subtilis, B. cereus,...

Ninety-day oral toxicity assessment of an alternative biopolymer for controlled release drug delivery systems obtained from cassava starch acetate. Repositório Alice
JESUS, D. R.; BARBOSA, L. N.; PRANDO, T. B. L.; MARTINS, L. F.; GASPAROTTO, F.; GUEDES, K. M. R.; DRAGUNSKI, D. C.; LOURENÇO, E. L. B.; DALSENTER, P. R.; GASPAROTTO JUNIOR, A..
The large consumption of biodegradable films from cassava starch acetate (FCSA) as ingredients in food and pharmaceutical products requires the assessment of the possible toxicity of these products. The aim of this study was to investigate the toxicity of biodegradable film from cassava starch acetate after oral exposure of Wistar rats for 90 days. The amount of food consumed and the body weight were weekly monitored. Blood and urine samples were obtained for the assessment of serum parameters and renal function. Histopathological analyses in target organs were also performed. No evidence of clinical toxicity in hematological, biochemical, or renal parameters in the FCSA-treated animals was found. In addition, relative organ weight and histopathological...
