A bioüzemanyag-gyártás nemzetközi összefüggései AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef.
A dráguló olajár „felszínre hozta” a fosszilis energiahordozók környezetbarát energiahordozókkal való kiváltásának problémáját. Az olajkészletek korlátozottsága mellett a bizonytalan kitermelés és a folyamatosan növekvő árak a bioüzemanyagok felé irányítják a politikai döntéshozók és a befektetők figyelmét. Az olajimportőr országoknak a bioüzemanyag-gyártás nyersanyagainak hazai termelése lehetővé teszi importköltségeik visszafogását, az üvegházhatást okozó gázok kibocsátásának csökkentését, valamint a mezőgazdasági termelők jövedelem-színvonalának javítását. A bioüzemanyagok elterjedése ugyanakkor enyhíti a kapacitása határán dolgozó olajfinomító ipar üzemanyag-ellátási terheit is, ami jelentős mértékben hozzájárul(t) az üzemanyagárak emelkedéséhez. Ma...

Abschätzung der Wertschöpfungspotenziale im ländlichen Raum durch Biokraftstoffe am Beispiel Nordrhein-Westfalens AgEcon
Breuer, Thomas; Holm-Muller, Karin.
To enhance the use of biofuels is stated priority of EU and German energy policy. Reasons given for this priority inter alia include positive income effects for the rural areas. This paper uses the example of North Rhine-Westphalia to investigate rural areas’ possibilities to profit from the added value of bio fuel production. It is shown that the main channel of income generation is based on stabilized demand for agricultural products. Taking into account recent policy shifts in Germany there remain few chances to participate in the added value of downstream production steps. In addition, due to considerable support for biogas plants maize production considerably reduces areas consecrated to bio fuel production.

ANÁLISE DA SUSTENTABILIDADE DA PRODUÇÃO DE BIODIESEL NO BRASIL AgEcon
Neste contexto, a...

Analyzing Drivers of World Food Prices: Weather, Growth, and Biofuels AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Kaye-Blake, William; Cagatay, Selim.
The recent rise of food cost in world markets has accelerated the research examining the underlying factors for this rise. The present research investigated the separate and combined impacts of three factors thought to contribute to the price rise: adverse weather events, strong and sustained growth in high populated countries, and increased biofuels production. The research further analysed the effects of these price rises on consumption expenditures in Brazil, China and India. Analyses were carried out using a partial equilibrium trade model with a focus on the 2004 to 2007 period. The modelling suggests that the most important factor behind the price rise depends on the commodity, with maize/corn, oilseeds, and sugar most affected by biofuels, while...

Bioethanol from Microalgal Biomass: A Promising Approach in Biorefinery BABT
Silva,Carlos Eduardo de Farias; Bertucco,Alberto.
Abstract The development of new technologies which increase the production of biofuel without directly compete with food production is required. Microalgal biomass has recently been in the highlight. The role of this biomass is here discussed within the concept of biorefinery and industrial sustainability of bioethanol production. The process of cultivation in order to accumulate around 50% of carbohydrates in the biomass (dry weight) and the importance of water and nutrient recycling are reviewed. Saccharification of biomass using enzymes or acids and alternative processes such as hydrothermal liquefaction and flash hydrolysis are addressed. Since the main monosaccharide in microalgal biomass is glucose, high rates of hydrolysis and fermentation were,...

Biofuel Economics in a Setting of Multiple Objectives & Unintended Consequences AgEcon
Jaeger, William K.; Egelkraut, Thorsten M..
This paper examines biofuels from an economic perspective and evaluates the merits of promoting biofuel production in the context of the policies’ multiple objectives, life-cycle implications, pecuniary externalities, and other unintended consequences. The policy goals most often cited are to reduce fossil fuel use and to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But the presence of multiple objectives and various indirect effects complicates normative evaluation. To address some of these complicating factors, we look at several combinations of policy alternatives that achieve the same set of incremental gains along the two primary targeted policy dimensions, making it possible to compare the costs and cost-effectiveness of each combination of policies. For example,...

Biofuels: Potential Production Capacity, Effects on Grain and Livestock Sectors, and Implications for Food Prices and Consumers AgEcon
Hayes, Dermot J.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Tokgoz, Simla; Elobeid, Amani E.; Yu, Tun-Hsiang (Edward); Dong, Fengxia; Hart, Chad E.; Chavez, Eddie C.; Pan, Suwen; Carriquiry, Miguel A.; Dumortier, Jerome.
We examined four evolution paths of the biofuel sector using a partial equilibrium world agricultural sector model in CARD that includes the new RFS in the 2007 EISA, a two-way relationship between fossil energy and biofuel markets, and a new trend toward corn oil extraction in ethanol plants. At one extreme, one scenario eliminates all support to the biofuel sector when the energy price is low, while the other extreme assumes no distribution bottleneck in ethanol demand growth when the energy price is high. The third scenario considers a pure market force driving ethanol demand growth because of the high energy price, while the last is a policy-induced shock with removal of the biofuel tax credit when the energy price is high. Standard results hold where...

Carbon Abatement in the Fuel Market with Biofuels: Implications for Second-Best Policies AgEcon
Crago, Christine Lasco; Khanna, Madhu.
A carbon tax would penalize carbon intensive fuels like gasoline and shift fuel consumption to less carbon intensive alternatives like biofuels. Since biofuel production competes for land with agriculture, a carbon tax could raise land rents, divert land towards fuel production, and raise agricultural prices. This paper analyzes the welfare effect of a carbon tax on fuel with gasoline and biofuel as available fuel choices, in the presence of a labor tax and biofuel subsidy. The second-best optimal carbon tax is also quantified. Findings show that when biofuels is part of the fuel mix, the carbon tax has a commodity price effect which arises from tax-induced changes in land rent. The commodity price effect could exacerbate or attenuate the tax interaction...

Cassava processing wastewater as a platform for third generation biodiesel production Scientia Agricola
Neves,Cristina; Maroneze,Mariana Manzoni; Santos,Aline Meireles dos; Francisco,Erika Cristina; Wagner,Roger; Zepka,Leila Queiroz; Jacob-Lopes,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate third generation biodiesel production by microalgae Phormidium autumnale using cassava processing wastewater as a platform. Experiments were performed in a heterotrophic bubble column bioreactor. The study focused on the evaluation of the bioreactor (batch and fed-batch) of different operational modes and the analysis of biofuel quality. Results indicate that fed-batch cultivations improved system performance, elevating biomass and oil productions to 12.0 g L−1 and 1.19 g L−1, respectively. The composition of this oil is predominantly saturated (60 %) and monounsaturated (39 %), resulting in a biodiesel that complys with U.S., European and Brazilian standards. The technological route developed indicates potential for...

CHEMICAL AND ENERGETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF AFRICAN SWEET SORGHUM AS A SOURCE OF BIOENERGY REA
Caraschi,José C.; Viana,Ronaldo da S.; Moreira,Bruno R. de A.; Prates,Glaucia A..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the energetic potential achieved by the application of phyto-regulators to sweet sorghum cultivars. A randomized complete block design was used. Experiments were conducted using two sweet sorghum cultivars (BRS 508 and BRS 509), fourphyto-regulators (ethephon, ethyl-trinexapac, glyphosate, and sulfometuron-methyl), and a control; four replicates were performed 70 days after sowing, at the beginning of the flowering phase of the plants, with the aid of a CO2-pressurized coastal sprayer. The plants were harvested after 40 days, with the stems being cleared at the height of the apical bud, and were subjected to grinding for the extraction of broth. The following analyses were carried out: chemical (total...

Cocoa Pod Ash as Bio-Based Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Waste Chicken Fat CIGR Journal
Odetoye, Temitope Elizabeth; Amusan, Greatness S..
The growing interest in using sustainable raw materials coupled with the need to reduce the over- dependence on non-renewable petroleum resources has made agricultural residues attractive raw material for biofuel production. The potential utilization of cocoa pod ash (CPA) as a bio-based catalyst for the production of biodiesel from waste chicken fat was investigated. Bio-based catalyst was obtained from cocoa pods by ashing method. The catalyst was subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The experimental design was based on a five level, two factor central composite design. CPA was used in the preparation of biodiesel from waste chicken fat (WCF) using a two-step esterification-transesterification process. The highest biodiesel yield of...

Contributions of U.S. Crop Subsidies to Biofuel and Related Markets AgEcon
Devadoss, Stephen; Bayham, Jude.
The U.S. crop subsidies provide incentives for farmers to expand feedstock production, which benefits the biofuel producers by lowering input costs. This study develops a general equilibrium model to analyze the effects of a reduction in the U.S. crop subsidy on biofuel industries and social welfare. The impacts of feedstock policies on the biofuel market are marginal. In contrast, the biofuel mandate has a larger impact and counteracts the effects of the crop subsidy reduction. The mandate increases the demand for feedstock and causes not only grain ethanol, but also cellulosic ethanol production to rise. The mandate exacerbates the distortion, and government spending increases significantly, leading to greater welfare loss.

Crude glycerol in diets for Nile tilapia in the fattening stage PAB
Santos,Lilian Dena dos; Zadinelo,Izabel Volkweis; Moesch,Augusto; Bombardelli,Robie Allan; Meurer,Fabio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of crude glycerol as an energy source to replace corn, in diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in the fattening stage. Two hundred Nile tilapia (190±4.5 g) were distributed in 20 tanks, in a completely randomized design. The treatments consisted of crude glycerol at 0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 g kg-1, to replace the dietary levels of corn, in order to maintain a constant digestible energy. Fish productive performance and the chemical composition of the fillet were evaluated. Histological analyses of the hepatopancreas, intestine, and visceral fat were also carried out. Crude glycerol had no effect on the performance parameters; however, it caused a quadratic reduction of visceral fat....
