Bacillus thuringiensis: fermentation process and risk assessment. A short review. Repositório Alice
CAPALBO, D. M. F..
Several factors make the local production of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) highly appropriate for pest control in developing nations. Bt can be cheaply produced on a wide variety of low cost, organic substrates. Local production results in considerable savings in hard currency which otherwise would be spent on importation of chemical and biological insecticides. The use of Bt in Brazil has been limited in comparison with chemical insecticides. Although Bt is imported, some Brazilian researchers have been working on its development and production. Fermentation processes (submerged and semi-solid) were applied, using by-products from agro-industries. As the semi-solid fermentation process demonstrated to be interesting for Bt endotoxins production, it could be...

Development of a Low Cost Bioprocess for Endotoxin Production by Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis Intended for Biological Control of Aedes aegypti BABT
Soccol,Carlos Ricardo; Pollom,Teresinha E. V.; Fendrich,Ricardo Cancio; Prochmann,Fernando Alberto; Mohan,Radijiskumar; Blaskowski,Marita Maciel Moreira; Melo,André Luiz de Almeida; Carvalho,Cláudio Jose Barros de; Soccol,Vanete Thomaz.
Aedes aegypti is the vector of Dengue disease, responsible for 20,000 deaths/year worldwide. Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis - Bti releases selective and effective toxins (crystal proteins) against A. aegypti larvae. We present a low cost bioprocess for toxin production, accomplished by a selected Brazilian strain Bti (BR-LPB01) and employment of low cost substrates. Soybean meal and sugarcane molasses lead to high toxic effectiveness after 2L bioreactor fermentation (LD50=26ng/mL), near to the reference strain IPS82 (LD50=17.3 ng/mL). The pH ranged between 5.8 and 7.0 during the exponential growth period and between 7.0 and 8.4 during the stationary phase, with low activity. Thus, control of foam and pH 7.0 were started and proved to be crucial for...

Discovery and development of biological agents to control crop pests Neotropical Entomology
Slininger,Patricia J.; Behle,Robert W.; Jackson,Mark A.; Schisler,David A..
Thousands of potential microbial biocontrol agents have been isolated from agricultural fields and crops during research over the last 80 years, yet only a few are in commercial use. Recently, public health and safety concerns about the environmental impact of chemical pesticides have led to consideration of biological control as a natural approach to maintaining crop health. Despite environmental incentives and strong research efforts, commercialization of biocontrol agents has been slow to evolve. The momentum of the chemical industry is difficult to shift, and fermentation processes tend to be more expensive to operate than synthetic chemical processes.Yet there is a demand for biological control products, especially in agricultural niche markets, where...

Evaluation of the Effect of Some Biopesticides on Alfalfa Weevil Larva, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal.) in Laboratory and Field Conditions CIGR Journal
Alizadeh, Esmaeil.
Alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica Gyllenhal.) control is traditionally based on the use of chemical insecticides. Due to the side effects of these compounds, there are many motivations for the use of integrated control methods, which may include the use of biopesticides (microbial and botanical). The result of the effect of seven doses  of the tested biopesticides (500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 and 3500 ppm) under laboratory conditions indicated that the insecticides Azadiractin® (1859.971 ppm) and Biobit® (2000.57 ppm) were of the highest, while Basiokara® (3178.697 ppm) and Naturalis® (2973.246 ppm) were of the lowest lethality. Field experiments were carried out based on randomized complete block design with 10 treatments and 4 replications. The...

Floating formulation for Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis obtained from semi-solid rice medium. Repositório Alice
CAPALBO, D. M. F.; ARANTES, O. N.; MEDUGNO, C. C.; SILOTO, R. C.; WATANABE, M. A.; GONZALES, G. M..
A loopful of Bti mantained on Luria-Bertani agar medium was transferred to Bacto-Peptona agar medium. After 3 days at 30oC, the petri-disheswere washed with sterilized water (100ml/petri-dish). The suspension obtained represented the inoculum for the semi-solid rice-based fermentation medium. The growth units were incubated until complete sporulation of Bti. The resulting biomass was dried at 60oC in an oven for 24h, sieved through 60 tyler. The retained powder did not show any larvicidal activity. In parallel, colloidal bentonite was treated with organic macromolecules dissolved in toluene, after sedimentation, the botton phase was dried at 120oC for 4h. This treatment led to a spreading and floating clay which resulted in a good carrier for Bti. Then,...

Non-Target Effects of Dalaca pallens Blanchard Control Examined Through Principal Response Curves: A Guild Approach in Southern Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Devotto,Luis; Cisternas,Ernesto; Carrillo,Roberto; Gerding,Marcos.
The non-target effects of biological control are a complex matter requiring a multi-approach analysis. A fungal biopesticide is under research to control the larval stages of the ghost moth Dalaca pallens Blanchard (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) in southern Chile. A field experiment was conducted to compare the effects of the biological control agent Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (10(12) spores ha-1) and the insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin (7.5 g active ingredient ha-1) on non-target invertebrate species belonging to different guilds. The soil invertebrates were collected by using pitfall trapping and soil coring before and after spraying the biocontrol agent or the insecticide. Caught individuals were assigned to predator, herbivore or decomposer...

Susceptibility of Spodoptera frugiperda and Chrysodeixis includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to infections caused by Metarhizium rileyi. Repositório Alice
BARROS, S. K. A.; PITTA, R. M.; LOPES, R. B.; ALMEIDA, E. G. de; FERREIRA, F. T. R..
EN-US: Due to the reduced host spectrum of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium rileyi, its pathogenicity against different target insects must be assessed to develop biopesticides capable of controlling more than one pest species. This study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of the pest species Chrysodeixis includens and Spodoptera frugiperda to different isolates of M. rileyi and, thus, determine a possible influence of the host of origin on the pathogenic activity of these isolates. Three isolates [CG1312 (C. includens as original host), CG381 (S. frugiperda as original host) and a new wild isolate (C. includens as original host)] were tested against larvae of C. includens and S. frugiperda, in third instar age, by treatment of surfaces with...

The impact of crop protection on agricultural production AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef; Hantos, Krisztina.
Chemical pesticides will continue to play a role in pest management for the future. In many situations, the benefits of pesticide use are high relative to the risks or there are no practical alternatives. The number and diversity of biological sources will increase, and products that originate in chemistry laboratories will be designed for particular target sites. Innovations in pesticide delivery systems in plants promise to reduce adverse environmental impacts even further. The correct use of pesticides can deliver significant socioeconomic and environmental benefits in the form of safe, healthy, affordable food; and enable sustainable farm management by improving the efficiency with which we use natural resources such as soil, water and overall land...
