Irrigated paddy fields are the rice growing areas having high yield potential. Two significant factors enhancing high yield are the well-adapted variety and appropriate management. PSL05101-93-1-32 is a promising rice line derived from the 3-way cross of PSL00508-3-1-1-4/IR66738-118-1-2//IR67966-188-2-2-1 in 2005. It has as high yield potential as 965 kg/rai (6.03 t/ha). The average grain yield is 730 kg/rai, greater than PSL2, CNT1 and RD47 varieties by 14, 13 and 7%, respectively. The maturity is 115 days after sowing by transplanting method. Plant height is 83-90 cm. This promising line is a non-glutinous long grain rice having straw-color husk. The paddy rice seed dimension is 10.4×2.61×2.10 mm in width × length × thickness, respectively. The paddy...

Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. The line is moderately resistant to brown planthopper and resistant to rice...

Bahng Taen is a non-glutinous, non-photoperiod sensitive, short duration and high yielding rice variety. This variety showed resistance against brown planthopper (BPH) in the Eastern region, but the resistance has decreased drastically. Therefore, marker-assisted backcrossing was applied to improve BPH resistance by introgression of a Bph3 resistant gene from PTB33 and Rathu Heenati into Bahng Taen. Two SSR markers, RM 170 for Bahng Taen with PTB33 crossing and RM 190 for Bahng Taen with Rathu Heenati crossing, were used in combination with plant type selection to obtain the target plants with Bph3 gene. Twenty six and thirty heterozygous BC4F1 plants were developed from the cross of Bahng Taen with PTB33 and Bahng Taen with Rathu Heenati, respectively....

This research was continued from the Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) backcross breeding program for improve CNT1 to resist to BPH by introgressed a Bph3 resistant gene from K/R IL into CNT1. A population was already done in BC3F1. This study was attempted to develop BC4F1-BC4F3 and validated BPH resistance in improved lines. Two markers, RM170 and RM190 which linked to Bph3 gene and plant type were going together used for selecting the target plants. Twenty heterozygous BC4F1 and eighty three homozygous BC4F2 plants were selected. Finally, seventy seven BC4F2 lines carrying Bph3 were used for BPH evaluation with 3 BPH population from Phitsanulok, Tak and Pathum Thani. The results showed that almost improved lines were higher resistant to BPH than CNT1 and...

Major pest in irrigated rice growing area of central and lower northern region since 1975 is brown planthopper. The factors of BPH outbreak are varieties seed rate fertilizer use misuse of chemical. The monitoring of population density is very important for forecasting the BPH outbreak. Light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreak of BPH was conducted in hot spot areas. Light trap was set in Prachin Buri Rice Research Center while surveying in farmers’ field in hot spot areas of outbreak in Prachin Buri province were investigated during January 2011 to December 2012. The number of BPH from light trap was counted everyday throughout the year. The results showed that light trap could collect large number of BPH. The peak of BPH in light trap...

Brown planthopper resistant promising line, SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3-2, is photoperiod insensitive line derived from single cross of SPR1/IR64 made at Suphan Buri Rice Research Center in 1994. Its F2-F6 progenies had been grown and selected at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center where fixed line, SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3, were obtained. In 2008, this line and other breeding lines were tested for brown planthopper (BPH) resistance and intra-station yield trial. SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3 was not selected to be tested in further step due to its unsatisfied yield, but it was only 1 of 2 lines that had no damage of BPH in greenhouse testing. Thus, remained seedlings of those 2 lines had been transplanted in pots and separately harvested panicle by panicle and pedigree...

The variety is normally grown in the wet season under upland condition. To obtain the information for appropriate time of sowing and growing with water as for the lowland sowing, Luempua was sown by transplanting in the cement container every 15 days from 2010-2013 at Phitsanulok Rice Research center (PSL). Results revealed that the most appropriate time of sowing is from mid to the end of May and the lowland areas especially those prone to Brown planthopper infestation are not recommended. CNT96024-61-1-PSL-1-2-20-2 is a short-growth duration rice variety which is suitable for growing in the rain-fed area. This rice variety derived from CNT96024-61-1-PSL-1-2, a product ofthe crossing of three cultivars; i.e. Suphanburi 1, IR64 and CNT86074-25-9-1(Suphanburi1/IR64//CNT86074-25-9-1), that still expressed its genetic diversity while it was growing in a breeder seeds production field. This leaded to the selection of the elite lines, CNT96024-61-1-PSL-1-2-20-2 which had an early maturation and short growth duration so that it could be harvested shortly at about 92 days after sowing. It had a fairly high yield potential of1,004 kg/rai with the average yields of 681 kg/rai, which is comparable with theRD41 (742 kg/rai), but higher thanRD43 (666...
