Estimating the total leaf area of the green dwarf coconut tree (Cocos nucifera L.) Scientia Agricola
Sousa,Elias Fernandes de; Araújo,Marilaine Campanati; Posse,Robson Prucoli; Detmann,Edenio; Bernardo,Salassier; Berbert,Pedro Amorim; Santos,Paulo Albernaz dos.
Leaf area has significant effect on tree transpiration, and its measurement is important to many study areas. This work aimed at developing a non-destructive, practical, and empirical method to estimate the total leaf area of green dwarf coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in plantations located at the northern region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A mathematical model was developed to estimate total leaf area values (TLA) as function of the average lengths of the last three leaf raquis (LR3), and of the number of leaves in the canopy (NL). The model has satisfactory degree of accuracy for agricultural engineering purposes.

Forage production of elephant grass under intermittent stocking PAB
Chaves,Carla Silva; Gomide,Carlos Augusto de Miranda; Ribeiro,Karina Guimarães; Paciullo,Domingos Sávio Campos; Ledo,Francisco José da Silva; Costa,Igor de Almeida; Campana,Ludmila Lacerda.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the dry matter production of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) genotypes, managed under intermittent stocking. A completely randomized design was used, with two genotypes and three replicates. The treatments consisted of factorial combinations (2x2x2) of genotypes ('BRS Kurumi' and the clone CNPGL 00‑1‑3), two light interception levels (LI) at the onset of grazing (90 and 95%), and two post‑grazing canopy heights (30 and 50 cm). A total of 24 Holstein x Zebu crossbred heifers were used. The stocking density varied in order to finish the grazing periods in two days. The interval between the defoliation, based on 95% LI, resulted in a higher leaf mass per grazing cycle. The post‑grazing height of 30 cm did not...

Genetic divergence among accessions of Axonopus jesuiticus x A. scoparius based on morphological and agronomical traits Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHEFFER-BASSO,SIMONE M.; FAVARETTO,ADRIANA; FELINI,VANDERLEIA; GOMES,CLAUDINEI C.; CARNEIRO,LUIS E.; CECCHIN,KALINCA.
This study had the objective of assessing the genetic divergence in giant missionary grass (Axonopus jesuiticus x A. scoparius) germplasm based on morphological and agronomic traits. Five accessions were evaluated in the field: V14337, V14403, V14404, V14405 and V14406. Three contrasting groups were formed using the UPGMA clustering method: V14337 and V14404 formed one group, V14403 and V14405 formed another, and V14406 was isolated from the other accessions. The most striking traits for the identification of the accessions were the height of the plant and the change color of the leaf. Only V14406 accession had purplish green leaves. The other four accessions differed with regards to plant height and dry matter production, with superiority of V14337 and...

Grazing intensity affects forage accumulation and persistence of Marandu palisadegrass in the Brazilian savannah. Repositório Alice
EUCLIDES, V. P. B.; MONTAGNER, D. B.; MACEDO, M. C. M.; ARAUJO, A. R. de; DIFANTE, G. S.; BARBOSA, R. A..
This 3?year study evaluated the effects of grazing intensity on herbage and steer responses in continuously stocked Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture in the Brazilian savanna. Treatments consisted of three grazing intensity levels, characterized by canopy heights of 15, 30 and 45 cm, measured twice per week. Responses variables included tiller population density (TPD), herbage accumulation rate (HAR) and body weight gain per area (WGA). A decline in TPD (1,237 vs. 767 tillers/m2) was observed from the first to the third grazing years, which influenced the HAR from the first to the third years (90.1 vs. 52.4 kg ha?1 day?1). A marked decline in body WGA (541 vs. 276 kg ha?1 year?1) was observed along the three years in pastures managed at a height of...

Landscape-scale variation in forest structure and biomass along an elevation gradient in the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar, Brazil. Repositório Alice
LEITOLD, V.; KELLER, M.; MORTON, D. C.; SHIMABUKURO, Y. E..
Landscape-scale quantification of forest structure, disturbance patterns and biomass distribution can improve our understanding of the environmental controls on the functioning of forested ecosystems. Assessing the detailed structure of the complex tropical forest canopy is a challenging task, especially in areas of steep topography where field access is limited. We used airborne lidar (light detection and ranging) data to describe the landscape-scale variation in canopy structure and gap distribution in a 1000-ha area along an elevation gradient from 0 to 1200m in the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar in southeast Brazil. Mean canopy heights (MCHs) were greatest (21-22m) at intermediate elevations (200-700m) in the submontane forest where terrain slope...
