Architectural changes in larval leaf shelters of Noctuana haematospila (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) between host plant species with different leaf thicknesses Rev. Bras. Zool.
Greeney,Harold F.; Walla,Thomas R.; Lynch,Ryan L..
Insect-food-plant associations have been shown to be influenced by the chemical, physical and nutritional characteristics of plants. We suggest that among insect larvae that use leaf material to build shelters, food-plant use may be constrained by differences in host leaf structure, illuminating a rarely investigated aspect of insect-plant interactions. To explore the potential effects of leaf structure on shelter building behavior in a Neotropical skipper butterfly, we investigated shelter building patterns on two congeneric food-plants that varied in leaf thickness. Shelter architecture varied significantly between hosts, with thicker leaves requiring longer cuts to construct shelters. The relationship between shelter building behavior and leaf structure...

Arthropod venom Hyaluronidases: biochemical properties and potential applications in medicine and biotechnology J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Bordon,Karla C F; Wiezel,Gisele A.; Amorim,Fernanda G.; Arantes,Eliane C..
AbstractHyaluronidases are enzymes that mainly degrade hyaluronan, the major glycosaminoglycan of the interstitial matrix. They are involved in several pathological and physiological activities including fertilization, wound healing, embryogenesis, angiogenesis, diffusion of toxins and drugs, metastasis, pneumonia, sepsis, bacteremia, meningitis, inflammation and allergy, among others. Hyaluronidases are widely distributed in nature and the enzymes from mammalian spermatozoa, lysosomes and animal venoms belong to the subclass EC 3.2.1.35. To date, only five three-dimensional structures for arthropod venom hyaluronidases (Apis mellifera and Vespula vulgaris) were determined. Additionally, there are four molecular models for hyaluronidases fromMesobuthus...

Building of Leaf Shelters by Stenoma scitiorella Walker (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae): Manipulation of Host Plant Quality? Neotropical Entomology
COSTA,ALEXANDRE A.; VARANDA,ELENICE M..
Building of leaf shelters is a widespread behavior among microlepidopteran larvae. Apparently, these shelters provide refuge to caterpillars against bad weather and reduce the risks of predation and parasitism. Recent studies about nutritional ecology of insects have suggested that such behavior would actually be an strategy evolutionarily selected to maximize the quality of the host plant consumed by them. Stenoma scitiorella Walker caterpillars tie together young Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae) leaves to build a shelter in which they retreat, feeding exclusively on inner leaves. The accumulation of damage and excrement in leaf shelters with several caterpillars may lead to a decline in larval development and survivorship. For providing the...

FERRAZ, J. M. G.; PATEL, P. M.; HABIB, M. E. M..
Many authors suggest the advantages of the intercropping of soybeans with maize or the cultivations of maize after the soybean crop, due to the increase of the inoculum potential that would be favoured by epizootics of N. rileyi, common in A. gemmatalis in soybeans crops. Based on the informations this work was developded. N. rileyi was isolated from dead larvae of A. gemmatalis and S. frugiperda. Larvae of A. gemmatalis were infected with N. rileyi isolated from S. frugiperda and vice-versa. A suspension of 3 X 107 spores/ml of N. rileyi was used to infect the larvae at the 4th instar. It were used 20 larvae and 3 replicates for each treatment: 1. A gemmatalis was inoculated with N. rileyi isolated from A. gemmatalis; 2. S frugiperda inoculated with N....

Elbella luteizona (Mabille, 1877) (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae: Pyrginae) in Brazilian Cerrado: larval morphology, diet, and shelter architecture Rev. Bras. entomol.
Lepesqueur,Cintia; Neis,Marina; Silva,Neuza A.P.; Pereira,Thayane; Rodrigues,Hanna Pâmela A.; Trindade,Tácito; Diniz,Ivone R..
Abstract This study examined temporal variation in the abundance of immature stages of Elbella luteizona (Hesperiidae) and describes the morphology and behavior of the larvae on their host plants, Byrsonima coccolobifolia and Myrsine guianensis. Five hundred sixty-eight 10 m diameter plots were searched for caterpillars in the Brazilian Cerrado over a period of one year. We inspected 5968 host plants, and found 31 eggs and 262 larvae on 244 plants. Similar numbers of immatures were found in both species of host plants. The abundance of immature stages varied monthly and was significantly higher in the dry season on both host plants, which may be due to the low density of natural enemies during that time. E. luteizona is univoltine, and larvae present...

First record of Chilomima clarkei (Amsel) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae) in Amapá state, Brazil. Repositório Alice
ADAIME, R.; SANTOS, R. S.; LIMA, A. L.; SANTOS, J. E. V. dos; SPECHT, A..
The present study reports Chilomima clarkei (Amsel) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) infesting stems of Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae) in Amapá state, Brazil, for the first time. Considering the importance of this species as a pest, it is necessary to publicize its occurrence and provide information about the main symptoms of the attacked plants and morphological characters of development stages to identify it quickly in crops. As there are no registered products for this pest's control, producers are advised to pay attention to any sign of infestation. To avoid it from spreading, they are also recommended to remove and burn all the infested parts detected in the plantations, in addition to selecting healthy manivas (stem cuttings) at the time of...

Histology and ultrastructure of the fat body of Anticarsia gemmatalis (HÜBNER, 1818) (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE) BABT
Carvalho,Renata Baldo Rodrigues; Andrade,Fábio Goulart de; Levy,Sheila Michele; Moscardi,Flávio; Falleiros,Ângela Maria Ferreira.
The aim of this study was to analyze the morphologically the fatty body of fourth-instar Anticarsia gemmatalis larvae under light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Two distinct portions of the fat body were detected: the parietal (PA) and perivisceral (PV). The PA, the parietal portion, presented a long-stripped shape located below the tegument and lateral to the digestive tube. The PV, rarely observed, was in dorsal region, adhered to digestive wall. Both the portions were constituted of only one cellular type, the trophocytes. These cells in the PA were organized in one layer of thickness showing cylindrical contiguously morphology, whereas the PV was comprised by a mass of small cells, superposed as clusters. Both the portions were covered...

Immature stages of the Selaginella -feeding Euptychia mollina (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) from the Brazilian Amazon Rev. Bras. Zool.
Freitas,André V. L.; Mota,Luísa L.; Barbosa,Eduardo P.; Carreira,Junia Y. O..
ABSTRACT The present paper describes the immature stages of the Neotropical satyrine butterfly Euptychia mollina (Hübner, [1813]) from the Brazilian Amazon Forest. Eggs were laid singly on the under surface of the fronds of its host plant, Selaginella sp. (Briophyta: Selaginellaceae). Larvae are solitary in all instars, presenting a color pattern and shape that make them cryptic on its host plant. The pupa is short, smooth and varies from rusty brown to green. Despite the lack of a close phylogenetic relationship, larvae of Euptychia are very similar to those of the paleotropical satyrines Ragadia and Acrophtalmia, suggesting that camouflage is likely to be one of the factors explaining the similarities among them.

Shelter building behavior of Pyrrhopyge papius (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) and the use of the Mayfield method for estimating survivorship of shelter-building Lepidopteran larvae Rev. Bras. Zool.
Greeney,Harold F.; Walla,Thomas R.; Jahner,Josh; Berger,Ryan.
Estimating the survivorship of lepidopteran larvae in the field poses many problems, most notably the potential for monitored subjects to simply wander away. Larvae of the family Hesperiidae, however, construct and dwell in shelters built out of leaf tissue on their host plants, return to their shelters between feeding bouts, and build a predictable series of shelters during larval ontogeny. Here we describe the shelter building behavior of Pyrrhopyge papius Hopffer, 1874 from northeastern Ecuador. Subsequently we test the use of the Mayfield method, a widely-used ornithological method for estimating survivorship of nests, to examine its utility for monitoring survival in free-living hesperiid larvae. Pyrrhopyge papius builds three distinct shelter types...
