Assessment of the ecological status of Mediterranean French coastal waters as required by the Water Framework Directive using the Posidonia oceanica Rapid Easy Index: PREI 5
Gobert, Sylvie; Sartoretto, Stephane; Rico-raimondino, Valerie; Andral, Bruno; Chery, Aurelia; Lejeune, Pierre; Boissery, Pierre.
This paper describes the PREI (Posidonia oceanica Rapid Easy Index), a method used to assess the ecological status of seawater along Mediterranean French coasts. The PREI was drawn up according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/EC) and was tested on 24 and 18 stations in PACA (Provence-Alpes-Cotes d'Azur) and Corsica, respectively. The PREI is based on five metrics: shoot density, shoot leaf surface area, E/L ratio (epiphytic biomass/leaf biomass), depth of lower limit, and type of this lower limit. The 42 studied stations were classified in the first four levels of status: high, good, moderate and poor. The PREI values ranged between 0.280 and 0.847; this classification is in accordance with our field knowledge and with our...

Distribution of silver in mussels and oysters along the French coasts: Data from the national monitoring program 5
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Auger, Dominique; Roux, Nathalie; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Santini, Anne.
Distribution and behavior of many trace elements in the aquatic environment has been well characterized, but little is known about silver (Ag) concentrations in coastal waters, even though this element ranks among the most toxic to marine invertebrates (Calabrese et al., 1977 ; Fisher and Hook, 1997 ; Webb and Wood, 1998). Studies conducted by Flegal et al. (1995), River-Duarte et al. (1999), and Ndung'u et al. (2001), provided the first valuable data on Ag distribution in the oceanic environment, indicating that this element is found in very low concentrations in the dissolved phase. However, although silver concentrations in coastal waters do not reach the nanomolar range (Smith and Flegal, 1993 ; Squire et al., 2002), formation of a stable chloro...

Évaluation des conséquences économiques de la gestion des risques sanitaires liés aux proliférations phytoplanctoniques marines 5
Ami, Dominique; Rochaix, Lise.
General introduction: The setting up of monitoring networks for coastal water quality of the REPHY type by IFREMER was taken from a public health standpoint and fits broadly in with a principle of precaution regarding eating shellfish meant for human consumption. The benefits to be compared with the costs of managing the REPHY network (estimated at FF7.4 million in 1995) are therefore first and foremost the reduction of the risk of poisoning and can be captured by subtracting the sanitation costs that are associated with them. Evaluating these direct benefits is, however, no easy task. The network leads in fact to the reduction of occurrences of poisoning such that the epidemiological data on which such a calculation should be founded diminishes over time....

Données in situ, satellitales et numériques 5
Hermida, J; Lazure, Pascal; Froidefond, Jm; Jegou, Anne-marie; Castaing, P.
Coastal waters are generally a product of mixing between continental and oceanic originated water masses. Near river mouth areas, as in the Gironde estuary, oceanic waters are modified by the influence of freshwater discharge that introduces suspended and dissolved substances, including pollutants. Within PNOC (Programme National d'Oceanographie Cotiere) our objective is to determine the extent of the influence of the Gironde estuary on to the Aquitanian continental shelf. Several cruises for collecting hydrological data have been carried out in this area. The data of every cruise were coupled with a NOAA-11 satellite passage. The recorded images have been analysed and were compared with the results given by a 3D mathematical model. The interaction among...

Le mercure, le cadmium et le plomb dans les eaux littorales libanaises: apports et suivi au moyen de bioindicateurs quantitatifs (éponges, bivalves et gastéropodes) 5
Nakhle, Khaled.
In 1975, the meeting for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona fixed several important objectives. One of them was the creation of National Observation Programs in order to evaluate the levels and tendencies of pollutants. Furthermore the MED-POL program has re-evaluated and developed these objectives. Lebanon has signed the Barcelona Convention and has been engaged in providing data about its coastal water quality. Unfortunately the Lebanese war, which also began in 1975, paralyzed the country for 15 years. Since 1990, successive governments in the country have fixed as an objective the reconstruction of the tourism sector. As a consequence, they became interested in the environmental problems. The studies carried out before or during the...

Microbial interactions in marine water amended by eroded benthic biofilm: A case study from an intertidal mudflat 5
Montanie, Helene; Ory, Pascaline; Orvain, Francis; Delmas, Daniel; Dupuy, Christine; Hartmann, Hans J..
In shallow macrotidal ecosystems with large intertidal mudflats, the sediment-water coupling plays a crucial role in structuring the pelagic microbial food web functioning, since inorganic and organic matter and microbial components (viruses and microbes) of the microphytobenthic biofilm can be suspended toward the water column. Two experimental bioassays were conducted in March and July 2008 to investigate the importance of biofilm input for the pelagic Microbial and Viral Loops. Pelagic inocula (< 0.6 μ- and < 10 μ filtrates) were diluted either with < 30 kDa-ultrafiltered seawater or with this ultrafiltrate enriched with the respective size-fractionated benthic biofilm or with < 30 kDa-benthic compounds (BC). The kinetics of heterotrophic...

Molecular screening of blue mussels indicated high mid-summer prevalence of human genogroup II Noroviruses, including the pandemic "GII.4 2012" variants in UK coastal waters during 2013 58
Biswas,Subhajit; Jackson,Philippa; Shannon,Rebecca; Dulwich,Katherine; Sukla,Soumi; Dixon,Ronald A..
Abstract This molecular study is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, on identification of norovirus, NoV GII.4 Sydney 2012 variants, from blue mussels collected from UK coastal waters. Blue mussels (three pooled samples from twelve mussels) collected during the 2013 summer months from UK coastal sites were screened by RT-PCR assays. PCR products of RdRP gene for noroviruses were purified, sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. All the samples tested positive for NoVs. Sequencing revealed that the NoV partial RdRP gene sequences from two pooled samples clustered with the pandemic "GII.4 Sydney variants" whilst the other pooled sample clustered with the NoV GII.2 variants. This molecular study indicated mussel contamination with...

Phytoplankton spring bloom of the Gironde plume waters in the Bay of Biscay: early phosphorus limitation and food-web consequences 5
Herbland, Alain; Delmas, Daniel; Laborde, P; Sautour, B; Artigas, F.
During the spring 1995 (2-25 May), a cruise was carried on the RV Poseidon (Germany) on the continental shelf of the south Bay of Biscay. The objective was a comprehensive study of the planktonic food web within the Gironde plume waters. In these waters phosphate was present at very low concentrations (undetectable to < 0.1 mu mol.L-1), whereas nitrate, silicate and ammonium concentrations were much higher (several mu mol.L-1 for nitrate and silicate and 0.5 to 1.0 mu mol.L-1 for ammonium). The size distribution of the phytoplankton biomass (estimated from chlorophyll a measurements by high performance liquid chromatography) and primary production (measured by C-14 in situ method) showed a great proportion of small (40 to 70 % < 3 mu m) and active...

Seasonal evolution of the nutrient pattern on Biscay Bay continental shelf over the years 1999-2000 5
Loyer, Sophie; Lampert, Luis; Menesguen, Alain; Cann, Philippe; Labasque, Thierry.
The French Atlantic shelf is Subjected to strong anthropic influences (urban, industrial and agricultural discharges) of two main rivers (Loire and Gironde). The extension and consequences of these continental loadings for the nutrient and chlorophyll distribution have never been studied before oil the Bay of Biscay continental shelf as a whole. We present the first synoptic view of the nutrient distribution and evolution oil the French Atlantic shelf. Nutrient concentrations of the surface layer were Studied during four cruises in April, June, September 1999 and March 2000. Until June, the freshwater inputs induce a nitrate gradient from river months to offshore waters in the vicinity of the 100 m isobath. The Redfield's ratio Study highlights the nitrate...
