The coconut mite,Aceria guerreronisKeifer (Acari: Eriophyidae), is a severe andubiquitous pest of coconut plantations worldwide. Vegetable oils contain fatty acids that areactive against a variety of agricultural pests; however, little is known about their efficiency incontrollingA. guerreronisas well as their adverse effects on its natural enemies. Here, weassessed the chemical profile of palm oil as well as its toxicity and repellence to bothA.guerreronisandTyphlodromus ornatusDenmark and Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a naturalenemy of the pest. Oleic, palmitic, and linoleic acids accounted for over 85% of palm oil fattyacid composition. Also, palm oil was approximately 4-fold more toxic to the coconut mite thanto its predator. Furthermore, the lethal... |

Genipap (Genipa americana L.) is a medicinal tree native to South America and the Amazon regions, where it is used as a popular traditional medicine. It is also highly consumed by people in the form of jams, juices, preserves, and wines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity, persistence, and the repellence properties of leaf methanolic extracts of genipap (LME) and its major iridoids (genipin and geniposide), against the key coconut pest mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer. The concentration-mortality bioassays revealed a strong acaricidal activity of LME against the coconut mite (LC50 = 0.60 mg.ml-1; and LC90 = 16.69 mg.ml-1). In addition, standard concentrations (0.6 mg.ml-1) of either genipin or geniposide killed 50 % and 62 % of the A.... |

Several species of predatory mites, naturally occurring in coconut plantations, play an important role in regulating populations of phytophagous mites that are key pests of this crop. Plant essential oils (EOs) are bioactive mixtures of compounds that hold potential for controlling phytophagous arthropods with minimal impacts on non-target organisms and the environment. This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition and assess the bioactivity of the EO extracted from the leaves of the ?Pera? sweet orange grafted on ?Rangpur lime? to a key pest of coconut plantations worldwide, namely the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae), and its compatibility with the naturally-occurring generalist predatory mite Typhlodromus ornatus (Acari:... |

The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae), is a major pest of coconut plantations (Cocos nucifera L.) worldwide. Here, we conducted a bioguided phytochemical approach using toxicity and repellency bioassays of nonpolar extract and its fractions of Vitex gardneriana Schauer (Lamiaceae) leaves to this pest. Nonpolar crude extract was fractionated by column chromatography using solvents with increased polarity and binary mixtures, resulting in five semipurified groups. The biomonitoring bioassay provided active fractions and led to the isolation and characterization of the bioactive compound squalene, a biosynthetic precursor of 20-hydroxyecdysone, which plays an important role in plant defense against arthropods. The LC50 of the crude... |
