A new genus and species of soft coral (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea: Alcyoniidae) from Lord Howe Island, Australia Naturalis
Alderslade, P..
Lohowia koosi, a new species and new genus in the family Alcyoniidae, is described from Lord Howe Island, Australia. The new taxon has dimorphic polyps and a similar morphology to some of the flat, lobe-less nominal species of Lobophytum. The new taxon is clearly distinguished, however, by the possession of large, heavily armed autozooids, polypary surface sclerites in the form of large spindles that protrude through the surface, extremely large interior sclerites and base surface sclerites in the form of rods, spindles and ovals.

A new genus and species of stoloniferous octocoral (Anthozoa: Clavulariidae) from the Pacific coast of North America Naturalis
Williams, G.C..
A new genus and species of intertidal octocoral is described from the Pacific coast of North America. The new taxon is placed in the stolonbearing family Clavulariidae, and although superficially similar in appearance to species in both the genera Clavularia and Sarcodictyon, it exhibits some unique characters to differentiate it from these taxa.

A new genus of soft coral (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) from the Republic of Congo (Pointe-Noire Region) ArchiMer
Van Ofwegen, Leen P.; Aurelle, Didier; Sartoretto, Stephane.
A new genus of soft coral from the Republic of Congo is described, Complexum gen. n. Nine West African octocoral species previously described in the genus Alcyonium by Tixier-Durivault (1955) are referred to this new genus, and a new species is described and figured, C. pusillum sp. n. The new species is characterized by having encrusting growth form and abundant spiny clubs in the surface of the polyparium. It colonizes shallow calcareous rocky banks (5 to 20 m depth) existing in coastal water of the region of Pointe-Noire. Based on molecular phylogeny this new genus is well separated from Alcyonium species.

A new species of Alertigorgia (Coelenterata: Octocorallia: Anthothelidae) from the Indo Malayan region Naturalis
Ofwegen, L.P. van; Alderslade, P..
A new species of Alertigorgia from Indonesian waters is described and depicted, and compared with the hitherto only described species in the genus, A. orientalis (Ridley, 1884). The species is part of a unique association in which a mollusc species lives on an octocoral, which on its turn lives on a sponge species.

A review of the endemic southern African soft coral genus Pieterfaurea Verseveldt & Bayer, 1988 (Octocorallia: Nidaliidae), with descriptions of three new species Naturalis
Williams, G.C..
The soft coral genus Pieterfaurea Verseveldt & Bayer, 1988, endemic to the south and east coasts of South Africa, is reviewed. Five species are recognized as valid, including three new species described here as new. A dichotomous key and a table of comparative characters are included to aid in the differentiation of the five taxa.

A study of the Xeniidae (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) collected on the "Tyro" expedition to the Seychelles with a description of a new genus and species Naturalis
Janes, M.P..
An examination of xeniid octocorals was carried out on specimens held in the National Museum of Natural History, Naturalis, Leiden, Netherlands. Samples collected during the Tyro expedition to the Seychelles Islands in the Western Indian Ocean were identified. Six species belong to the genera Cespitularia, Heteroxenia, and Ovabunda are described; five of these are new records for this location. Three new species belonging to the genera Anthelia, Cespitularia and Ovabunda are illustrated. In addition, a new genus belonging to the family Xeniidae is introduced accompanied by scanning electron micrographs of its sclerites. Gross morphology and the ultra-structure of the sclerites indicate there are some similarities in this new genus with Anthelia. However,...

Four new genera of soft corals (Coelenterata: Octocorallia), with notes on the classification of some established taxa Naturalis
Alderslade, P..
Four new genera, Rhytisma, Klyxum and Skamnarium (family Alcyoniidae) and Sansibia (family Xeniidae), are proposed to accommodate a number of species wrongly assigned to some established genera. A large number of the species concerned have been previously included in the genus Alcyonium, and remarks are made concerning the heterogenous nature of that genus. The reassignment of Parerythropodium hicksoni Utinomi, 1972, to Erythropodium, Alcyonium gracillimum Kükenthal, 1906, to Scleronephthya, and Clavularia hamra to Briareum is also discussed, and the existence of Funginus Tixier-Durivault, 1987, as a replacement name for Fungulus Tixier-Durivault, 1970, is highlighted.

Hydraires semi-profonds de Madagascar, (Coelenterata Hydrozoa), étude systematique et écologique Naturalis
Gravier-Bonnet, N..
The present collection was made on the south and west coasts of Madagascar between 90 en 465 meters depth and includes 17 species of calyptoblastic hydroids, belonging to six families: Campanulinidae, Lafoeidae, Campanulariidae, Syntheciidae, Sertulariidae and Plumulariidae. Twelve are recorded for the first time from Madagascar, while three of these are new for the Indian Ocean and one is described as new (Tulpa costata). Endemic species represent half of the collection and are numerically more important than cosmopolitan, tropical-indopacific, and southern species. A comparative study of bathymetrical characteristics of species from Madagascar and around the world allows to distinguish three groups of species: deepsea species, which have a very wide...

The demise of Coelenterata and Madreporaria Naturalis
Land, J. van der.
Names of groups of organisms in the higher categories are being changed rather often, even when there is no need for it. This is allowed because the codes of nomenclature do not apply to group names above the family level. Regrettably this may lead to long periods of confusion. Examples are Coelenterata for which the new name Cnidaria was proposed in 1888 and Madreporaria for which the new name Scleractinia was proposed in 1900. The gradual replacement of the old names by the new names in scientific papers during the last 50 years was analyzed. The name Madreporaria virtually disappeared during this period and the name Coelenterata is now being used in only about 10% of scientific papers and had better be abandoned as well.

Мордухай-Болтовский, Ф. Д.
