Cyanobacterial blooms in stratified and destratified eutrophic reservoirs in semi-arid region of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

This study investigated the dynamics of cyanobacteria in two deep, eutrophic reservoirs in a semi-arid region of Brazil during periods of stratification and destratification. Four collections were carried out at each reservoir at two depths at three-month intervals. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, water transparency, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, orthophosphate and total nitrogen. Phytoplankton density was quantified for the determination of the biomass of cyanobacteria. The data were analyzed using CCA. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszyn´ ska) Seenayya et Subba Raju 1972 es una especie capaz de generar diversas toxinas que impactan negativamente sobre la calidad del agua destinada al consumo humano así como a otros usos de la misma. Cepas del hemisferio norte producen la hepatotoxina cilindrospermopsina, mientras que las sudamericanas generan las toxinas neurotóxicas saxitoxinas. Florações de Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii têm sido cada vez mais freqüentes em reservatórios brasileiros em virtude da sua alta competitividade em ambientes tropicais eutrofizados. Esta espécie é produtora de toxinas extremamente agressivas, as quais podem causar problemas de saúde pública e danos ao meio ambiente. Nosso objetivo foi acompanhar a variação temporal da densidade desta população relacionando-a com variáveis ambientais e detectando os possíveis fatores que interferem no seu desenvolvimento. The present study reports the phytoplankton abundance, dominance and co-existence relationships in the eutrophic Carpina reservoir, Pernambuco, Brazil. Sampling was carried out at six different depths bimonthly at a single reservoir spanning two climatic periods: dry season (January, September, and November 2006) and rainy season (March, May, and July 2006). Density, abundance, dominance, specific diversity and equitability of the community were determined, along with chlorophyll a, and physical and chemical variables of the environment. This study reports the spatial and temporal behavior of straight and coiled morphotypes of C. raciborskii in a reservoir in Brazil's semi-arid region as well as the main factors responsible for the variability. Two set of samples were collected from the subsurface and bottom in the central region of a reservoir in two seasonal periods (dry - January 2005; rainy - June 2005) over 20-hour sampling periods during daylight (8 am, 12 pm and 4 pm) and dark (8 pm, 12 am and 4 am) hours. The aim of this study was to determine how abiotic factors drive the phytoplankton community in a water supply reservoir within short sampling intervals. Samples were collected at the subsurface (0.1 m) and bottom of limnetic (8 m) and littoral (2 m) zones in both the dry and rainy seasons. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, pH, total nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus and orthophosphate. ABSTRACT Conservational studies of the threatened Atlantic Forest biome are frequently restricted to terrestrial ecosystems. We know little about the water bodies, specially considering that this biome covers the third largest system of lakes in Brazil. Some of these lakes are located inside the protected "Rio Doce State Park", but many others are found outside this reserve. These external lakes are seldom studied, but understanding their response to human activities is essential for the conservation and the protection of the lakes inside the Park.
