Electronic - Versus Paper - Editions of knowledge, current trust and fear: A contribution to the 40th anniversary of the journal "Cellulose Chemistry and Technology", outlined by some glance on the emergence of scientific concepts in cellulose and lignin chemistry Inra
Monties, B..
At first, the three current questions on the ‘transmission of knowledge’, what, how and why to transmit, are reviewed recalling the emergence and evolution of the concepts of ‘cellulose’ and ‘lignin’, devised more than one century ago as ‘chemical compounds’ and now currently perceived as ‘bio-polymer-structures’ or ‘macromolecular self-organized systems’. Avoiding any contemporary controversy, it is then suggested that such challenging questions would result from both 1/ the difficulty to explain ‘new’ specific concepts by using ‘old’ generic ‘words’ as illustrated with reference to recent ‘modern’ papers, as well as from 2/ the lack of extended studies of the ‘recent and old literature’, mainly due to the difficulty of extensively explore, in a limited...

First insights into the relationship between production intensity and sustainability: application to the whole gradient of beef and dairy production systems in France Inra
Teillard D'eyry, F.; DOYEN, L.; JIGUET, F.; Tichit, M..
One of the key components of livestock farming system sustainability is their ability to ensure efficient production while preserving biodiversity. Whether this relationship depends on production intensity is still under debate. Surprisingly, most studies linking agricultural production with biodiversity focused on yield as a surrogate for production intensity. Indeed, livestock production relies on complex technical choices which cannot be reduced to a simplistic opposition between management techniques generating more or less yield. Production intensity should be thus described as a process articulating at least the level of inputs and outputs. This paper reports the results of a study aimed at (i) developing production intensity indicators based on...

FOLy: An integrated database for the classification and functional annotation of fungal oxidoreductases potentially involved in the degradation of lignin and related aromatic compounds Inra
Levasseur, A.; Piumi, F.; Coutinho, P.M.; Rancurel, C.; Asther, M.; Delattre, M.; Henrissat, B.; Pontarotti, P.; Asther, M.; Record, E..
The breakdown of lignin by fungi is a key step during carbon recycling in terrestrial ecosystems. This process is of great interest for green and white biotechnological applications. Given the importance of these enzymatic processes, we have classified the enzymes potentially involved in lignin catabolism into sequence-based families and integrated them in a newly developed database, designated Fungal Oxidative Lignin enzymes (FOLy). Families were defined after sequence similarity searches starting from protein sequences and validated by the convergence of results with biochemical experiments reported in the literature. The resulting database was applied as a tool for the functional annotation of genomes from different fungi, namely (i) the Basidiomycota...

MOSAIC: an online database dedicated to the comparative genomics of bacterial strains at the intra-species level Inra
Chiapello, H.; Gendrault, A.; Caron, C.; Blum, J.; Petit, M.A.; El Karoui, M..
The recent availability of complete sequences for numerous closely related bacterial genomes opens up new challenges in comparative genomics. Several methods have been developed to align complete genomes at the nucleotide level but their use and the biological interpretation of results are not straightforward. It is therefore necessary to develop new resources to access, analyze, and visualize genome comparisons. Description Here we present recent developments on MOSAIC, a generalist comparative bacterial genome database. This database provides the bacteriologist community with easy access to comparisons of complete bacterial genomes at the intra-species level. The strategy we developed for comparison allows us to define two types of regions in bacterial...

Prunus genetic resources in Europe: achievement and perspectives of a networking activity Inra
Zanetto, A.; Maggioni, L.; Tobutt; Dosba, F..
Under the auspices of IPGRI (International Plant Genetics Resources Institute) and with the support of EuropeanUnion from 1996 to 1999, a European network on Prunus Genetic resources has been progressively organizedin the context of European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources Networks (ECP/GR). More than20 countries are involved in the survey of national collections, the elaboration of the different descriptors fortheir documentation, and the development of the European Prunus database (EPDB). At present, the permanentcollections gathered more than 8000 accessions for which passport and characterization data are registered in theEPDB. EPDB has been made available on the Internet. The objectives of the Prunus working group are to defineand...
