Alkanes as markers in nutritional studies with wild ruminant and non-ruminant animals Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Dimas Estrasulas de; Silva,Sila Carneiro da.
Knowledge of information relative to the digestibility, intake and botanical and morphological composition of the diet is important in nutritional studies, since it provides the basis for understanding aspects related to the ingestive behavior and selectivity of animals. N-alkanes have been used successfully as markers in studies with many species of animals, particularly domesticated ruminants, most of the times as replacements for conventional markers as chromium oxide for example. However, for wild ruminants and non-ruminant animals information on this technique is still scarce and, as a consequence, its potential for use unknown. This review reports the use of this technique in studies of feed digestibility, intake and diet composition with wild...

COMPOSICIÓN DIETARIA DEL PEZ LEÓN, PTEROIS VOLITANS (PISCES: SCORPAENIDAE), EN SANTA MARTA Y EL PARQUE NACIONAL NATURAL TAYRONA* Boletín de Investigaciones
Muñoz-Escobar,Laura; Gil-Agudelo,Diego Luis.
The lionfish (Pterois volitans) has established in the Colombian Caribbean coast. Its presence was reported for the first time in continental Colombia in 2009, but its abundance has increased significantly by the end of 2009 and 2010, being now common to find it in the entire Colombian Caribbean. The present study evaluates the diet components of the lionfish in Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park. Five teleost families (Apogonidae, Gobiidae, Serranidae, Clupeidae, and Pomacentridae) and some crustaceans were identified as components of the diet of the lionfish. Some of these organisms belong to families of ecological and economic importance, which can have impacts on populations of local fish as has happened in other latitudes. Consequently, this...

Description of diet of pelagic fish in the southwestern Atlantic, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gorni,Guilherme Rossi; Goitein,Roberto; Amorim,Alberto Ferreira de.
This study reveals the food composition of pelagic fishes living in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. As such more common pelagic species are considered to be top predators, the study proposes to know what constitutes their main food. Fish are not commonly found within their stomach contents, but instead, cephalopods are their most common food. As can be observed, Teuthida cephalopods compose their principal diet. The stomach contents of specimens of Xiphias gladius, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Isurus oxyrinchus and Alopias superciliosus caught during July 2007 to June 2009 by using tuna longliners were studied. Teuthida cephalopods constitute the main food item for the three tuna species, while X. gladius feeds mainly on Ommastrephidae...

Diet of Iheringichthys labrosus (Pimelodidae, Siluriformes) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná River, Brazil-Paraguay BABT
Abes,Sara da Silva; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Okada,Edson Kiyoshi; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
Iheringichthys labrosus is a secondary commercial fish species in the Itaipu Reservoir, but it is important in other reservoirs of the basin. However, little information exists about this species in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the diet of this species in the Itaipu Reservoir. Stomachs of 306 fishes were analyzed, collected from October 1994 to September 1996 in the differents zones of the reservoir (according to a longitudinal gradient). The reservoir was separated into riverine (upper reach), transitional (middle reach), and lacustrine (next to the dam) zones. Main items in the diet of I. labrosus were aquatic insects (mainly Chironomidae) and mollusks (mainly Bivalvia). Their presence in the diet did not vary according to...

Effects of sex, seed size and amount of dietary fiber on retention time of captive black howler monkeys Mastozool. neotrop.
dos Santos Neto,Raymundo T. M; Guevara,Roberto; Lopes,Maria A.
The effectiveness of a seed disperser depends, among various factors still poorly understood for many Neotropical primates, on the amount of time seeds are retained within its digestive tract. This study tested the effects of sex, seed size and dietary fiber content on seed retention time in the digestive tract of black howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya). Experiments were performed using six captive individuals (three of each sex), six seed species distributed in three size classes (small, medium, and large), and three percentages of leaves in the diet (15, 30 and 60% of total food ingested). Retention times were recorded for 1767 recovered seeds, corresponding to 55% of the total ingested. More than 98% of these seeds were undamaged, suggesting the...

Estimating forage intake of lactating dual-purpose cows using chromium oxide and n-alkanes as external markers Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Dimas Estrasulas de; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Aroeira,Luís Januário Magalhães; Silva,Sila Carneiro da.
The n-alkanes have been used to estimate forage dry matter intake, digestibility and the diet composition in grazing animals. The objective this study was to compare chromium oxide and n-alkanes techniques used to estimate forage intake. Twenty lactating dual-purpose cows receiving two sources of fat (treatments: conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or Megalac (control)) plus 4 kg of concentrate were dosed with n-alkanes and chromium oxide to estimate the intake of stargrass (Cynodon nlemfüensis Vanderyst var. nlemfüensis). The in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility of the stargrass and concentrate were used to estimate the nutritive value of the digesta. The n-alkanes between C23 and C36 were quantified in the digesta and feces. The regression between...

Feeding ecology of the endangered huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) in Los Alerces National Park, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Vila,Alejandro R.; Galende,Gladys I.; Pastore,Hernán.
The huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) is one of the most endangered and less known neotropical deer. We evaluated its diet in Los Alerces National Park, Argentina. Botanical composition of the diet was studied seasonally using microhistological analysis of fecal samples. Twenty six of the 72 available plant species were recorded in the huemul diet. The annual diet was largely dominated by shrubs (mean + SE= 64.7 + 2.4%) and trees (28.1 + 2.4%). Forbs and grasses only represented 4.6 + 1.1% and 2.5 + 0.6%. The huemul predominantly fed on Nothofagus sp., Maytenus sp., Embothrium coccineum, Schinus patagonicus and Gaultheria mucronata. Diet composition changed significantly between warm-growing and cold-dormant periods. The annual niche breadth was low,...

Feeding habits of the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in the Brazilian cerrado Mastozool. neotrop.
Rodrigues,Flávio H.G.; Hass,Adriani; Lacerda,Ana C.R.; Grando,Raquel L.S.C.; Bagno,Marcelo A.; Bezerra,Alexandra M.R.; Silva,Wesley R..
The maned wolf feeds mainly on fruits and small vertebrates. The diet of maned wolf was studied at Águas Emendadas Ecological Station (AEES) through 328 faecal samples collected from November 1996 to August 1999. To evaluate the seasonal variation in food availability, the fruit phenology of the wolf's fruit, the main food item in maned wolf's diet, was monitored counting the fruits produced in 20 marked plants. Fructification phenology of fleshy fruit plants in the cerrado habitat of AEES was recorded monitoring five plots of 100 x 20 m , where the number of fruit producing species and individuals were recorded. The diet composition was 60% vegetal items and 40% animal ones. The wolf's fruit, other fruits and small mammals were the most frequent consumed...

Feeding patterns of the aquatic grasshopper Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) in the middle Paraná river, Argentina Neotropical Entomology
Capello,S; de Wysiecki,ML; Marchese,M.
The aquatic grasshopper Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) is native to South America and inhabits lowlands from southern Mexico to Central Argentina and Uruguay. This grasshopper is host-specific to aquatic plants of the genera Eichhornia and Pontederia. The objectives of this study were to analyze the feeding patterns of the aquatic grasshopper C. aquaticum in relationship to development stages and sex and to determine the food consumption rate in their host plant, Eichhornia crassipes. Samples were collected from April 2006 to May 2007 in different floodplain lakes of the Middle Parana River. The average consumption was greater in the females (0.127 g food/day ± 0.051) than in the males (0.060 g food/day ± 0.025). The feces of 361 nymphs and adults of this...

Food habits and seed dispersal by Thrichomys apereoides (Rodentia: Echimyidae) in a Brazilian Cerrado reserve Mastozool. neotrop.
Lessa,Leonardo G.; Costa,Fabiane N..
The food habits and seed dispersal promoted by Thrichomys apereoides (Rodentia, Echimyidae) were investigated in a Cerrado reserve in southeastern Brazil. Diet was determined by faecal analysis and seed dispersal was tested through seed germination experiments. As a result, 68 scats of T. apereoides were collected and in mean 76.5% contained arthropods, hymenoptera being the most frequent food item. Moderate to high germination rates obtained showed that, despite the efficiency of the rodent's feeding apparatus, small sized seeds of pioneer plants passed undamaged through the guts and remained viable. The high consumption of seeds belonging to pioneer plants (Clidemia urceolata and Miconia holosericea) emphasizes the importance of T. apereoides related to...

Sources de variation intra-populationelle de la morphologie des otolithes: asymétrie directionnelle et régime alimentaire ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine.
Otoliths are calcified structures located in Osteichthyes’ inner ear that are involved in audition and balance. Their morphology is used as an indicator of various ecological processes or properties. This application requires identifying the endogenous and exogenous factors that act simultaneously as sources of shape variation. This thesis aims at detecting and quantifying the relative contributions of directional asymmetry and diet to otolith shape variation at the intra-population level. Directional asymmetry between left and right otoliths was found in flat-fishes, the blind-side otolith being always longer and larger, whereas it was negligible in round-fishes. However, asymmetry amplitude never exceeded 18 %, which suggests evolutionary canalization of...

The diet of the black widow spider Latrodectus mirabilis (Theridiidae) in two cereal crops of central Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Pompozzi,Gabriel; Ferretti,Nelson; Schwerdt,Leonela; Copperi,Sofía; Ferrero,Adriana A.; Simó,Miguel.
The spider Latrodectus mirabilis (Holmberg, 1876) is commonly found in cereals crops of central Argentina. We studied its diet composition at the field and capture rate on leaf-cutting ants based on laboratory experiments. This study comprises the first approach that documents the diet of L. mirabilis in wheat and oat fields of central Argentina. We identified 1,004 prey items collected from its webs during the last phenological stages of both cereal crops. The prey composition was variable but the spiders prey mainly on ants (Formicidae, Hymenoptera), who represented more than 86% of the total. Meanwhile, in the capture rate experiences we registered a high proportion of ants captured by spiders at the beginning of experiences, capturing the half of the...

The Nutrition Transition in High and Low-Income Countries: What are the Policy Lessons? AgEcon
Popkin, Barry M.; Ng, Shu Wen.
The world has seen a remarkable shift from a period when diets, activity patterns and body composition were characterized by the period termed the receding famine pattern to one dominated by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NR-NCDs). This presentation first examines the speed of these changes, summarizes dietary changes, and provides some sense of the way the burden of obesity is shifting from the rich to the poor not only in urban but also rural areas throughout the world. The focus is on the lower- and middle- income countries of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America but some examples will come from the United States, Australia, and the UK. After showing that changes are occurring at great speed and at earlier stages of countries'...

The South-American rattlesnake Crotalus durissus: feeding ecology in the central region of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Hoyos,María Adelaida; Almeida-Santos,Selma Maria.
Abstract We investigated food patterns in the diet composition of 452 specimens of Crotalus durissus from Central Brazil. Thirty-three items were recorded corresponding to four categories: rodents (75.76%), marsupials (6.06%), unidentified mammals (9.09%) and reptiles (9.09%). Adults of both sexes and some juveniles feed mostly on mammals, specifically rodents, it is the most active and abundant prey throughout the year mainly in areas from Cerrado. In addition, we observed that in C. durissus there is a trend in the diet of females could be more diverse, maybe this can be associated to sexual differences involving different strategies of the feeding biology of this rattlesnake.
