America's Eating Habits: Changes and Consequences

The objective of this study was to determine the economic viability of common bean production by small farms in the micro-region of Ceres, Goias state, Brasil. Common beans are grown in three different seasons: 1st season (summer, during rainy season), 2nd season (late summer until autumn, with last rainfall) and the 3rd season (winter, with irrigation).

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta a análise dos custos de implantação e manutenção de um sistema agroflorestal com cultivos diversificados. Esta avaliação é uma etapa preliminar de uma análise integrada que considerará, além dos fatores socioeconômicos, a recuperação ambiental da área. São apresentados o modelo empregado no sistema, alguns resultados iniciais e os custos de implantação e manutenção. A análise dos dados mostra que houve uma concentração dos gastos na implantação e no primeiro ano deste sistema. The effects of considering variable within-farm soil runoff and leaching potential on costs of reducing nitrogen losses are analyzed for a Virginia dairy. Manure applications may cause nitrogen losses through runoff and leaching because of factors such as uncertain nitrogen mineralization. Farmers can reduce nitrogen control costs by applying manure on soils with less nitrogen loss potential. Ignoring within-farm soil variability may result in overstating the farm's costs of reducing nitrogen losses.

Pressures and Preferences Affecting Willingness to Apply Beef Manure on Crops in the Colorado High Plains

Little is known about producers' willingness to use manure. Past studies have focused on substitutability for fertilizers. We surveyed crop producers in a cattle-dense region of the Colorado Plains about whether and why they apply manure, focusing on how pressures (like owning cattle) or preferences (pro and con) affect their adoption. Using logistic regression, findings show that pressure and preference (PS/PF) significantly affect adoption. A producer with high PS/PF was 10 times more likely to use manure than one with low PS/PF. Policy and decision makers can use such findings to inform education and policy aimed at increasing the land application of manure.

Salmonellosis, a common human intestinal disorder primarily caused by contaminated meats and poultry, attacks an estimated two million Americans annually. Using a cost of illness approach, the medical costs and productivity losses alone were estimated to cost around one billion dollars in 1987. If pain and suffering, lost leisure time, and chronic disease costs could be quantified, the estimate would increase significantly. Other procedures for calculating the value of life could either raise or lower the estimated economic benefits of reducing human salmonellosis.
