Brazil is home to 37 genera of palm trees that participate in the ecologicalbalance of different biomes. In the southern region there is a genus of palm tree, Butia spp., which has eight species, and is threatened with extinction. Butiá extractivism, through management that allows its rational exploration, can be an alternative to encourage its preservation. The aim of this article is to present a diagnosis of the extraction of butia plant in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, providing systematized data about this reality. The first stage of the research consisted of a survey on thenumber of properties that have areas of butia groves throughout the state, through Emater-RS. Based on these data, it was possible to define a statistically representative sample,... |

Rational breeding of stingless bees (or meliponines) is called meliponiculture. In Brazil, studies related to meliponiculture are recent, developed with regional bees. The objective of the study was to elaborate a diagnosis of meliponiculture in Rio Grande do Sul. The data were collected in two stages, the first, through a survey carried out with the extension technicians Emater-RS, and the second, with data collected in a statistically significant sample from the beekeepers. The results show that there are 16,209 families involved in the activity, which have stingless bee hives in their establishment; the number of meliponine hives on rural properties in the state is 80,054 thousand, predominantly in the Northwest mesoregion. The profile of beekeepers is... |

Food security in developing countries depends in part on the sustainable use of natural resources. Food security is usually examined through three dimensions, namely the availability, access, and utilization of food. Ecosystems directly and indirectly support each of these dimensions through the provision of critical ecosystem services that facilitate agricultural production, create income- generating opportunities, and provide energy for cooking. However, in some cases, household uses of natural resources undermine particular elements of food security, hindering national poverty reduction strategies and threatening the sustainability of critical ecosystem functions. I examine the role of ecosystem services in rural food security through the lens of its... |

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of sugarcane juice on the population dynamics of Escherichia coli and the presence of Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) during the anaerobic codigestion of dairy cattle manure. For the overall analyses at the end of a hydraulic retention time of 90 days, ten two-liter batch-type biodigesters were divided into two treatment groups: biodigester containing manure and water (MW) and the biodigester containing manure, water and sugarcane juice (MSC). For monitoring the population dynamics and presence of microorganisms, pH, and volatile acidity, tests were carried out every ten days, on 36 smaller-scale batch biodigesters made of one-liter plastic bottles (18 for each treatment). The... |

ABSTRACT The demand for environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems encouraged this study, which evaluated the productive aspects and nutritional status of 'Piatã' palisadegrass and productive aspects and bromatological composition of 'Marandu' palisadegrass fertilized with eggshell, replacing other sources of calcium. 'Piatã' palisadegrass was grown in the field, in a randomized block design, and 'Marandu' palisadegrass in pots, in a completely randomized design, both with eggshell doses equivalent to 0, 78, 156, 234, 312 and 390 kg ha-1 of total calcium, using four replicates. The productive aspects of 'Piatã' and 'Marandu' grasses were not significantly altered by the eggshell doses, as well as the contents and accumulations of N, P, K,... |

This paper focuses on global responsibility of food, energy and environmental security. World population growth will lead to increasing demand for food and feed with increasing meat consumption. With globalization and urbanization production is moving to the most competitive countries and regions, and food trade is becoming more liberalized but also more concentrated. Growing energy demand and climate change will also influence food production. Additional challenges are increasing market volatility resulting from yield and climate change. We need greater responsibility in cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in showing greater respect for the environment. More responsibility is needed regarding food and energy security, and environmental sustainability.... |
