Baroreflex and chemoreflex dysfunction in streptozotocin-diabetic rats BJMBR
Several investigators have demonstrated that streptozotocin (STZ) diabetes induces changes in the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. Changes in cardiovascular function may be related to peripheral neuropathy. The aim of the present study was to analyze changes in heart rate (HR) and arterial pressure (AP) as well as baroreflex and chemoreflex sensitivity in STZ-induced diabetic male Wistar rats (STZ, 50 mg/kg, iv, 15 days). Intra-arterial blood pressure signals were obtained for control and diabetic rats (N = 9, each group). Data were processed in a data acquisition system (CODAS, 1 kHz). Baroreflex sensitivity was evaluated by measuring heart rate changes induced by arterial pressure variation produced by phenylephrine and sodium...

Cardiovascular control in experimental diabetes BJMBR
De Angelis,K.; Schaan,B.D.; Maeda,C.Y.; Dall'Ago,P.; Wichi,R.B.; Irigoyen,M.C..
Several studies have reported impairment in cardiovascular function and control in diabetes. The studies cited in this review were carried out from a few days up to 3 months after streptozotocin administration and were concerned with the control of the circulation. We observed that early changes (5 days) in blood pressure control by different peripheral receptors were maintained for several months. Moreover, the impairment of reflex responses observed after baroreceptor and chemoreceptor stimulation was probably related to changes in the efferent limb of the reflex arc (sympathetic and parasympathetic), but changes also in the central nervous system could not be excluded. Changes in renal sympathetic nerve activity during volume expansion were blunted in...

Effects of exercise training on autonomic and myocardial dysfunction in streptozotocin-diabetic rats BJMBR
De Angelis,K.L.D.; Oliveira,A.R.; Dall'Ago,P.; Peixoto,L.R.A.; Gadonski,G.; Lacchini,S.; Fernandes,T.G.; Irigoyen,M.C..
Several investigators have demonstrated that diabetes is associated with autonomic and myocardial dysfunction. Exercise training is an efficient non-pharmacological treatment for cardiac and metabolic diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of exercise training on hemodynamic and autonomic diabetic dysfunction. After 1 week of diabetes induction (streptozotocin, 50 mg/kg, iv), male Wistar rats (222 ± 5 g, N = 18) were submitted to exercise training for 10 weeks on a treadmill. Arterial pressure signals were obtained and processed with a data acquisition system. Autonomic function and intrinsic heart rate were studied by injecting methylatropine and propranolol. Left ventricular function was assessed in hearts perfused in vitro...

Response of the lung after pneumonectomy in alloxan diabetic rats BABT
Seidel,Amélia Cristina; Fagundes,Djalma José; Novo,Neil Ferreira; Juliano,Yara; Meister,Hugo; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa.
In order to determine the response of remaining lung after pneumonectomy during diabetes, female Wistar rats that received an intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (D Group) or saline (C Group) were submitted to lung resection. Six days after alloxan injection (45 mg/kg), diabetes was confirmed. The rats were randomized divided in 3 subgroups: non-operated (NO), sham operation (SO) and left pneumonectomy (PE). Thirty days after the surgery all rats were killed and the weight and volume of the lungs were measured. PE-diabetic rats showed smaller lung weight and volume than PE-non-diabetic animals. The results demonstrated that the compensatory lung growth postpneumonectomy were not observed in diabetic rats.

Transmission Electron Microscopy Studies of the Vestibulocochlear Nerve in Chronic Diabetic Rats International Journal of Morphology
Vasconcelos,Carlos Augusto Carvalho de; Fazan,Valéria Paula Sassoli; Moore,Kenneth Charles; Nessler,Randy Alan; Valença,Marcelo Moraes.
It is widely described in the literature that diabetic patients present hearing impairment. Despite the histological alterations of the internal ear structures in these patients as well as in experimental models of diabetes, to the best of our knowledge, an histological evaluation of the vestibulocochlear nerve have not been performed. In the present study, ultrastructural alterations are described and compared between a spinal nerves and a cranial nerve in rats with chronic induced diabetes. Male Wistar rats (n = 12), fed with standard diet from the animal care facility at 42 days of age were used. Induced diabetic animals (n=6) were fasted for 12 hours prior to being injected intraperitoneally with streptozotocin (STZ - 60mg/kg) in a single dose. Control...
