A classification proposal for coefficients of variation in Eucalyptus experiments involving survival, growth and wood quality variables Bragantia

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to present a classification proposal for coefficients of variation (CV) in Eucalyptus experiments, aiming at providing a useful tool for experiments involving growth, survival and wood quality traits. Ninety-four studies were selected from a search for peer-reviewed journals yielding a total of 508 data. The CVs were classified as low, moderate, high and very high. The mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values, skewness and kurtosis were estimated to describe the distribution shape. The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed that all variables satisfied the assumption of normality (p < 0.05). The objective of this paper was to evaluate the range of classification of variation coefficient in experiments with sugarcane. For this study, some of the variables that are mostly used by researchers of the culture were considered. The data was obtained after extensive bibliographical revision from scientific journals, data base from the improvement program of sugarcane from the Federal University of Viçosa, master dissertations, doctorate thesis and technical reports. Classification ranges were proposed according to the Costa method, in which is based the use of a median and pseudo-sigma. A magnitude do erro experimental tem efeito direto no sucesso de experimentos, no melhoramento de plantas. Este trabalho objetivou verificar a interferência de métodos de correção de estande na produtividade de 25 híbridos de sorgo granífero, em sete ambientes. Os métodos avaliados foram: sem correção, regra de três, covariância de estande médio e de estande ideal, Zuber, Cruz, Vencovsky & Cruz e correção estratificada, com base no agrupamento de genótipos. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi utilizado para verificar a magnitude da influência de cada método, em relação aos dados sem correção. ABSTRACT The statistical interpretation of experimental results is inherent to the research process. Therefore, every researcher is expected to have basic understanding on the subject. In vegetable crops, the planning, implementing and data gathering is more complex due to specific aspects related to this group of plants, such as intensive management and high labor requirement to carry out the experiments, uneven fruit maturation and heterogeneity of the experimental area. It is important to quantify the population of stink bugs in the soybean, in order to determine the actions which are necessary for their control to protect the crop from losses in production, together with a reduction in cost and less environmental impact. The objectives of this study were to determine the sample size (the number of sampling points) needed to estimate the average population density of the bugs, and to verify the variability in sample size for the phases and species of the bugs and the phenological stages of the plants. ABSTRACT The variability within rows of cultivation may reduce the accuracy of experiments conducted in a complete randomized block design if the rows are considered as blocks, however, little is known about this variability in protected environments. Thus, our aim was to study the variability of the fresh mass in lettuce shoot, growing in protected environment, and to verify the border effect and size of the experimental unit in minimizing the productive variability.
