The aim of the present study was to evaluate the transfer of learning of the professional training course “Ausbildung zum Weidepraktiker”. An online questionnaire (17 questions) was developed and sent out to alumni of the course. A return rate of 48 % was achieved. The results show that a number of the studied key aspects of the course were already implemented by the participants before visiting the training. Actions implemented because of the professional training were these which required expert knowledge. More than 70 % of the participant believed that the training motivated them to optimise their pasture management and 67 % rated the training´s benefit for agricultural practice as excellent. The majority of the alumni believed that there should be a... |

The urge for more sustainable agriculture is increasingly recognized by the various parts of society (producers, consumers, scientists, policy makers, etc.). But in order to realize sustainable agriculture in practice it is not sufficient to change only the on-farm agricultural practices. Present socio-economic and political paradigms also need a change so that these can be able to support implementation of sustainable agriculture. The concept of Demonstration Centres for Applied Agricultural Sustainability (DCAAS) offers an interesting concept and operative tool for changes not only at the farm level. Well designed and professionally organized DCAAS don't have a potential to demonstrate only "excellence" of sustainable agricultural production in... |

Soil fertility is at stake at a global scale, putting pressure on food security, poverty alleviation and environmental protection, under scenarios of climate change that in most cases aggravate the threat. In sub-Saharan Africa, a combination of depleted soils and population growth adds particular pressure to smallholder farmers and society. Their capacity to innovate in a social, economic, political and cultural context is seen as decisive to reverse the trend of declining soil fertility. However, many technologies with a potential to protect, maintain and build up soil fertility are hardly used by small-scale farmers, triggering the urgent question on their reasoning not to do so. Exploring and understanding the constraints and complexity of the social... |

Good research dissemination has to define the exploitable results, to produce suitable dissemination tools and select the best dissemination channels in order to bring the key messages to the target groups. Publications in peer-reviewed journals and other forms of written documents such as articles in popular journals or technical leaflets are traditionally the most selected tools and channels for research dissemination (Poulsen 2010). Because consolidated research results are available usually at the end of a research project only, continuous dissemination activities during the lifetime of a project is not always ensured. We argue that new media including blogs, YouTube videos, Facebook, and Twitter, can help to create an arena for a potential target... |
