Animal performance and carcass characteristics of Nellore young bulls fed coated or uncoated urea slaughtered at different weights R. Bras. Zootec.
Pazdiora,Raul Dirceu; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Faria,Marcelo Henrique de; Siqueira,Gustavo Rezende; Almeida,Geraldo Benedito de Souza; Sampaio,Ricardo Linhares; Pacheco,Paulo Santana; Prietto,Murilo Sergio Rodrigues.
The objective of this study was to evaluate animal performance and carcass characteristics of 64 Nellore young bulls at 22 months of age finished in a feedlot and slaughtered at five body weights (350; 455; 485; 555 and 580 kg) fed diets containing coated or uncoated urea. The experimental design adopted was completely randomized, set in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, and for the variables assessed in the control animals, it was 5 × 2. No effect of interaction between slaughter weights and diets were observed, so the variables were analyzed separately, compared by polynomial contrasts and by the F test, respectively. The time animals remained in the feedlot to reach slaughter weights was 66, 88, 145 and 194 days. Average daily gain (ADG) showed quadratic...

Carcass and meat characteristics of crossbred steers submitted to different nutritional strategies at growing and finishing phases Ciência Rural
Rezende,Pedro Leonardo de Paula; Restle,João; Fernandes,Juliano José de Resende; Freitas Neto,Marcondes Dias de; Prado,Cristiano Sales; Pereira,Marcela Luzia Rodrigues.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of different nutritional strategies at growing and finishing phases on carcass and meat characteristics from 24 crossbred steers predominatly Holstein, slaughtered at 15 months of age and with 395.00kg of body weight. At the growing phase, the animals were maintained on Brachiaria brizantha pasture with two levels of supplementation in amounts equivalent to 0.5 or 1.0% of body weight. Subsequently, the animals were finished in feedlot with diets composed of 50 or 80% of concentrate. The high level of the concentrate at the finishing phase increased significantly (P<0.05) the hot carcass yield (50.16 vs. 48.62%). The lowest level of supplementation at the growing phase resulted in higher (P<0.05)...

Digital-image analysis to predict weight and yields of boneless subprimal beef cuts Scientia Agricola
Teira,Gustavo Adolfo; Tinois,Eduardo; Lotufo,Roberto de Alencar; Felício,Pedro Eduardo de.
For several decades, beef carcass evaluation for grading or research purposes has relied upon subjective visual scores, and manually taken measurements, but in recent times there has been a growing interest in new technologies capable of improving accuracy of estimates. Equations to predict weight and yield of beef pistol subprimal cuts were developed in this work using digital image analysis (VIA) of the 12th rib steak. Equations to predict total pistol subprimal cuts weight (CUTS) had coefficients of determination (CD) of 0.84, or 0.87 to 0.88, when the independent variables were the VIA parameters and the half carcass weight (HC) or the total pistol weight (TP), respectively. The predicted values for the total seven subprimal cuts, as a percentage of...

Estimation of light lamb carcass composition by in vivo real-time ultrasonography at four anatomical locations IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Ripoll, G.; Joy, M.; Álvarez-Rodríguez, J.; Sanz, B.; Teixeira, A..
The objectives of this study were to study the relationship between in vivo ultrasound measurements and cold carcass measurements at 4 anatomical points of the backbone, and to establish regression equations to estimate carcass composition within the cold carcass weight range for Ternasco lambs (8 to 12.5 kg) by using ultrasonic measurements taken at a single location. Measurements of subcutaneous fat and skin thickness and of muscle depth and width were taken over the 10th to 11th and 12th to 13th thoracic vertebrae and the 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th lumbar vertebrae. These measurements were taken at 2 and 4 cm from the nearest end of the LM to the backbone and at 1/3 of the LM width with the probe perpendicular to and parallel to the backbone. The left...

In vivo estimation of lamb carcass composition by real-time ultrasonography IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Teixeira, A.; Matos, S.; Rodrigues, Sandra; Delfa, R.; Cadavez, Vasco.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure fat thickness in live lambs and predict carcass composition to find a system that can assess carcass composition easily and accurately, without damage to the product and can improve carcass classification. Fat thickness (FTh) between the 12th and 13th ribs and between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae, was measured in vivo using real-time ultrasound, in 67 Churra Galega Bragançana males (mean weight 36.0 kg, range 21.5–47.0 kg), using an ALOKA SSD-500V equipped with two probes (5 and 7.5 MHz) in order to predict carcass composition. The most satisfactory correlation between carcass and ultrasound measurements was between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae fat thickness...

Intake, performance and estimated methane production of Nellore steers fed soybean grain R. Bras. Zootec.
Messana,Juliana Duarte; Canesin,Roberta Carrilho; Fiorentini,Giovani; Reis,Ricardo Andrade; Arcuri,Pedro Braga; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha.
The objective of this study was to evaluate nutrient intake, performance, estimated methane production and carcass characteristics of steers fed diets containing three different levels of soybean grain: 0, 120 and 230 g/kg on the dry matter (DM). The study was conducted on eighteen castrated Nellore males with an average initial body weight (BW) of 370±12 kg in a completely randomized design, with three treatments and six repetitions. Intake of dry matter (DMI, kg/day) and crude protein tended to decrease linearly, and the intake of ether extract increased linearly in response to the soybean grain levels in the diet. Levels of soybean grain in the diet did not affect DMI (g/kg of BW), final average weight, average daily weight gain, feed efficiency and...

Suguisawa,Liliane; Mattos,Wilson Roberto Soares; Oliveira,Henrique Nunes de; Silveira,Antônio Carlos; Arrigoni,Mário de Beni; Haddad,Cláudio Maluf; Chardulo,Luis Artur Loyola; Martins,Cyntia Ludovico.
Considerable resources have been allocated to support research in the development of non-invasive and non-destructive techniques for carcass composition and quality evaluation. Ultrasonography is a reliable and relatively low-cost technique that can be used. In the present study, real-time ultrasonography was used to predict ribeye area (REA) and subcutaneous fat thickness (FT) in live animals as compared to carcass measurements. Animals used were 115 yearling bull calves (initial body weight, 329 kg), kept under feedlot conditions, of four genetic groups (30, ½ Angus x Nellore; 30, ½ Canchim x Nellore; 30, ½ Simmental x Nellore, and 25 Nellore), and two finishing frame sizes (small and large). Four ultrasonographic measurements were taken every 28 days...
