Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have... |

The present study was conducted to determine the parameters regulating spawning performance of P. orbignyanus wild broodstock. The adaptation to captivity was successfully achieved with minimal stress levels. In three consecutive spawning seasons, the annual photothermal manipulation was not effective for the maturation and natural spawning of females although males were running. Females were HCG injected, releasing non fertilized eggs. Artificial fertilization was carried out after stripping the fish with a total production of 18,000 fertilized eggs in 2001 (egg diameter=800±10 µm), 55,300 in 2002 (egg diameter= 850±12 µm)and 1,635,000 fertilized eggs in 2003 (egg diameter 818.4 ±30.08 µm, oil drop 98.1 ±2.96 µm). For the study of the ovulationtime,... |

The aim of the present work was to answer the following question: can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? In the initial phase of the study, fish were evenly distributed and maintained for two weeks in four tanks. In tanks 1 and 2, the ration was given in three equal meals at 8, 12 and 16h or at 9, 13 and 17h, respectively. In tanks 3 and 4, there was only one daily meal at 9 or 10 o’clock, respectively. In the second 8-week phase, fish from tank 1 were distributed into two groups in ten 100-L tanks: the 8-12-16 group, in which fish were always fed at 8, 12 and 16h; and the 8-12-16/9-13-17 group, in which fish were fed at 8, 12 and 16h in the first four weeks and at 9, 13 and 17h in the last four weeks. Fish from... |

Collection of microalgae strains and initial and intermediate production of Nannochloropsis oculata (Eustigmatophyceae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Microalgae, as primary producers of the marine trophic pyramid, make up the first link of the food chain in the aquatic environment. In aquaculture, they are the basis of the whole production of marine fish larvae food such as rotifera, copepods and artemias. Within the “Experimental Mariculture and Biology” Program, at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), the culture technology of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus) that requires production of microalgae to obtain larvae and juveniles of both species is being developed. The first step... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different feed management on the quality of effluent water generated in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture ponds. Feed was supplied as follows: natural food, and pelleted, extruded or minced ration. The study was conducted during 19 weeks in 12 continuous water exchange ponds of 300 m² each, with a population of male Nile tilapia juveniles, in a density equal to 1.7 fish m-2. Feeds contained 30% crude protein, 3,000 kcal digestible energy, and were supplied twice a day. Natural food consisted of chicken manure. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chlorophyll a and suspended solids were monitored weekly in the supplying and effluent water. Water residence... |

The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with Artemia , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( Artemia only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received Artemia exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did... |
