Analysis of a participatory approach for collection of economic data in aquaculture systems at farm level in Brazil. Repositório Alice
PEDROZA FILHO, M. X.; RODRIGUES, A. P. O.; REZENDE, F. P.; FLORES, R. M. V.; MUNOZ, A. E. P.; BARROSO, R. M..
Economic assessment at the farm level requires a robust methodology in order to assure reliability. This paper describes an innovative methodology and analyzes its ability to fill a gap regarding economic methodology for farm level aquaculture in Brazil. This methodology consists of collection of technical parameters, production costs and other economic information by expert panels with value chain agents. Variables are obtained through consensus among panel participants considering the typical farm approach (TFA). All collected data are presented to producers in order to improve comprehension about their performance. A benefit of this methodology includes highly reliable data because information is provided by a representative sample of producers that...

Climate change and fish farming. Repositório Alice
SILVA, M. G. da; PACKER, A. P.; SAMPAIO, F. G.; SILVA, C. M. da; SILVA, J. L. da.
The knowledge of the environmental impact of an activity can be seen as a market differential. Agricultural activities such as cattle raising have been heavily taxed because they are considered high greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, forcing the market to adopt mitigating measures. Little is known about its emission and its real impact of aquaculture on climate change. The increase of GHG in the atmosphere results in alterations like the increase of the temperature and changes in the precipitation with direct effects in the aquaculture as alterations in the growth, reproduction and fish mortality. A pioneer work was done to quantify methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes of fish farming areas with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in net cages....

Ecological studies on fish farms of el-fayoum depression (egypt) OceanDocs
Konsowa, A.H..
This study was carried out at the fish farms of El-Fayioum province during 2003 farming season. They extend along the eastern bank of Lake Qarun. These farms derive its water and drainage wastes into Diar El-Berka Drain. pH values at the chosen farms ranged between 7.43 and 8.91 and its values are certainly optimum for fish culture. Salinity levels at fish farms adjacent to Lake Qarun (Goda 2, 9.5‰) are generally much higher than the other fishing ponds due to seepage from the lake water. The major nutrient concentrations (N & P) at the main feeder were much higher than the corresponding values at fish farms. Nitrogen concentrations that represented by NO2-N, NO3-N and NH4-N indicated the dominance of NH4-N over NO2-N and NO3-N at the selected fish...

Integrated animal-fish farming in Southern Brazil: practices, challenges, opportunities and difficulties. Repositório Alice
PEDROZA FILHO, M. X.; SOUSA, C. W. A. de.
In Santa Catarina state, the fish farming has characteristics that distinguish it from other states, as it is developed mostly in small farms. In these small farms the integration of production occurs by using corn as the main component for pig diet and pig manure is often used to fertilize corn, wheat and soybean. In this context, the integration with fish farming emerged as a complementary activity aiming to increase pig´s income. The integrated pig-fish farming developed in Santa Catarina consist of a polyculture based on Chinese model coupled with pig manure utilization.

Integration of small scale fish farmers and processing industry in developing countries: case study of aquaculture value chain in Brazil. Repositório Alice
PEDROZA FILHO, M. X.; CASTILHO, M..
Most of fish farmed by small scale producers in developing countries is sold directly to local markets without passing through a processing industry. Besides problems related to sanitary requirements, this situation highlights the low added value retained by fish farmers. In Brazil, the integration between small scale fish farmers and processing industry is restricted to few cooperatives, mainly at southern region.

Mediterranean Aquaculture: Marine Fish Farming Development OceanDocs
Basurco, B..
in many parts of the world, aquaculture production in the Mediterranean has been expanding rapidly over recent years. Total aquaculture production in the region reached 1,266,959 t in 1999, which represents approximately 6% of the world aquaculture production (3% in 1995). Although Mediterranean aquaculture still focuses more on mollusc production (53.9%), the share of fish production is progressing constantly (46% in 1999, and 35% in 1995), parallel to global trends of world aquaculture. The Mediterranean coast displays a wide range of geographical characteristics and supports many functions, such as tourism, residential development, and conservation, which may compete with aquaculture for resources. Many coastal areas are also physically exposed,...

Abstract: The intense growth of fish farming in Brazil requires an operational monitoring of water quality. Water transparency is an important parameter to investigate the biological balance in productive waters. Empirical algorithms based on remotely sensed data can be used to monitoring the spatial and temporal variability in such productive system. This work aimed to map the water transparency in caged-fish farm from space and to evaluate the short-term impact of this activity on eutrophication. The results showed that the empirical algorithm (band ratio 443/665 nm) was satisfactory for study area (MAPE = 17.5%) and the water transparency was an indicator of algal presence in fish farms.
