Contemporary pollen and seed dispersal in natural populations of Bertholletia excelsa (Bonpl.) Repositório Alice
BALDONI, A. B.; WADT, L. H. O.; CAMPOS, T.; SILVA, V. S.; AZEVEDO, V. C. R.; MATA, L. R.; BOTIN, A. A.; MENDES, N. O.; TARDIN, F. D.; TONINI, H.; HOOGERHEIDE, E. S. S.; SEBBENN, A. M..
Due to the nutritional content and commercial value of its seeds, Bertholletia excelsa is one of the most important species exploited in the Amazon region. The species is hermaphroditic, insect pollinated, and its seeds are dispersed by barochory and animals. Because the fruit set is dependent on natural pollinator activity, gene flow plays a key role in fruit production. However, to date, there have been no studies on pollen and seed flow in natural populations of B. excelsa. Herein, we used microsatellite loci and parentage analysis to investigate the spatial genetic structure (SGS), realized pollen and seed dispersal, and effective pollen dispersal for two B. excelsa populations in the Brazilian Amazon forest. Two plots were established in natural...

Evolutionary and social consequences of introgression of nontransgenic herbicide resistance from rice to weedy rice in Brazil. Repositório Alice
MEROTTO JUNIOR, A.; GOULART, I. C. G. dos R.; NUNES, A. L.; KALSING, A.; MARKUS, C.; MENEZES, V. G.; WANDER, A. E..
Several studies have expressed concerns about the effects of gene flow from transgenic herbicide-resistant crops to their wild relatives, but no major problems have been observed. This review describes a case study in which what has been feared in transgenics regarding gene flow has actually changed biodiversity and people?s lives. Nontransgenic imidazolinone-resistant rice (IMI-rice) cultivars increased the rice grain yield by 50% in southern Brazil. This increase was beneficial for life quality of the farmers and also improved the regional economy. However, weedy rice resistant to imidazolinone herbicides started to evolve three years after the first use of IMI-rice cultivars. Population genetic studies indicate that the herbicide- resistant weedy rice...

Population genetic structure of three species in the genus Astrocaryum G. Mey. (Arecaceae). Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, N. P.; OLIVEIRA, M. do S. P. de; DAVIDE, L. C.; KALISZ, S..
We assessed the level and distribution of genetic diversity in three species of the economically important palm genus Astrocaryum located in Pará State, in northern Brazil. Samples were collected in three municipalities for Astrocaryum aculeatum: Belterra, Santarém, and Terra Santa; and in two municipalities for both A. murumuru: Belém and Santo Antônio do Tauá and A. paramaca: Belém and Ananindeua. Eight microsatellite loci amplified well and were used for genetic analysis. The mean number of alleles per locus for A. aculeatum, A. murumuru, and A. paramaca were 2.33, 2.38, and 2.06, respectively. Genetic diversity was similar for the three species, ranging from HE = 0.222 in A. aculeatum to HE = 0.254 in A. murumuru. Both FST and AMOVA showed that most of...
