Gibberellic acid (GA3) is an important hormone, which controls plant's growth and development. Solid State Fermentation (SSF) allows the use of agro-industrial residues reducing the production costs. The screening of strains (four of Gibberella fujikuoroi and one of Fusarium moniliforme) and substrates (citric pulp, soy bran, sugarcane bagasse, soy husk, cassava bagasse and coffee husk) and inoculum preparation study were conducted in order to evaluate the best conditions to produce GA3 by SSF. Fermentation assays were carried out in erlenmeyers flasks at 29°C, with initial moisture of 75-80%. Different medium for inoculum production were tested in relation to cells viability and GA3 production by SSF. F. moniliforme LPB 03 and citric pulp were chosen for... |

Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is a problematic weed in citrus orchards and crop fields in northern Iran. In a series of laboratory and greenhouse experiments, we evaluated the effects that treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3), as well as environmental factors, including temperature, the duration of pre-chilling (wet and dry), drought stress, salt stress, pH, and sowing depth, have on seed dormancy breaking and germination in C. bursa-pastoris. Treatment with GA3 strongly stimulated germination of C. bursa-pastoris in conditions of light/dark and continuous darkness. The germination rate was highest (40.08%) for seeds treated with 400 ppm of GA3 in the light/dark condition. Treatment with KNO3 did not significantly... |

The effects of storage time and exogenous gibberellic acid on lychee seeds germination were studied. The seeds were removed from ripe fruits, washed, dried, stored at 8°C for 0, 15 and 30 days, and soaked during 24 hours in water and GA3 at 50, 100 and 200 mg.L-1 solutions. As the storage period increased, the germination capacity was lost, and the seeds had a short germinability after 30-day storage period. Gibberellic acid had not significant effect on enhancing both the germination percentage and rate. |

Abstract The genus Passiflora, commonly known as fruits of passion, includes numerous species, including gulupa (Passiflora edulis f. edulis), of nutracetic and economic importance, both for consumption in nature and for its agro-industrial applicability. This research was developed to evaluate the effects of various pre-germinative treatments on the germination of gulupa seeds from the municipality of Ramiriquí (Boyacá), such as: exposure to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hypochlorite of sodium (NaOCl), gibberellic acid (GA3), distilled water imbibition and stratification at 4 °C, in varying concentrations and exposure times (24 and 48 hours), using an experimental design completely random, with three repetitions of 50 seed each one. Statistical analysis... |

Soybean is an important crop in Brazil. Nonetheless, there are no reports on the use of plant growth regulator potential in relation to this crop in the national literature. To better understand the role of these compounds, a pot experiment was carried out to study effects of GA3 and cytokinin on the vegetative growth of the soybean. GA3 (50 mg L-1) was applied as seed treatment, leaving plants with water application as control. GA3 (100 mg L-1) and cytokinin (30 mg L-1) were sprayed on leaves at the physiological stage V3/V4, and 15 days after, cytokinin (30 mg L-1), also as foliar spray. Seed treatment decreased plant emergence and initial soybean root growth, but as the season progressed, differences in root growth disappeared; plants were shorter, and... |

Background: Calibration of dynamic models in biotechnology is challenging. Kinetic models are usually complex and differential equations are highly coupled involving a large number of parameters. In addition, available measurements are scarce and infrequent, and some key variables are often non-measurable. Therefore, effective optimization and statistical analysis methods are crucial to achieve meaningful results. In this research, we apply a metaheuristic scatter search algorithm to calibrate a solid substrate cultivation model. Results: Even though scatter search has shown to be effective for calibrating difficult nonlinear models, we show here that a posteriori analysis can significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of the estimation.... |

Abstract Dormancy in grape seeds slows the progress of many breeding programs of the crop, culminating in low uniformity and low germination percentages. Conventional methods used to overcome dormancy are time-consuming. Thus, in vitro seed germination emerges as a promising alternative to ensure the germination of grape seeds. In this study, we examined the in vitro germination and vigor of seedlings originating from seeds of ‘Red Globe’, ‘Italia’ and ‘Niagara Rosada’ grapes in growth media supplemented with five concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3) (0, 1.41, 2.83, 4.24 and 5.66 µmol L-1) for 47 days. The use of GA3 increased seed germination percentage and seedling vigor, in the three varieties. Therefore, for the in vitro germination of seeds of... |

ABSTRACT: In this study, the micropropagation of Impatiens balsamina was established from stem and shoot explants. The effects of GA3 and glutathione on the morphogenesis of this species were also investigated, in order to induce in vitro flowering. It was found that the optimum in vitro plant regeneration was achieved on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 GA3 and in vitro flowering was also obtained from the same medium after 4 weeks of culture. To understand cellular behavior during in vitro flowering, Mitotic Index (MI), chromosome counts, measurement of mean cell and nuclear areas, DNA measurements and ploidy levels were analyzed from in vivo plants, in vitro grown plants and plantlets that flowered in vitro. The chromosome count was the same for... |

An in vitro culture procedure was developed to induce shoots and roots of Guarianthe skinneri (Orchidaceae) plantlets regenerated from seed-derived protocorms on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) médium supplemented with 6-benzyladenine (BA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a-naftalenacetic acid (NAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3). A máximum of 10.6 shoots was obtained with 16.1 μM NAA, 17.1 μM IAA, 6.3 x 10-9 μM GA3 and 0.0023 μM BA. A máximum of 4.0 roots on each shoot with 5.4 μM NAA, 17.1 μM IAA, 0.001 μM AG3 and 4.6 x 10-9 μM BA. Máximum shoot and root length was obtained with a minimum of GA3, but a máximum IAA. GA3, was the main factor controlling shoot and root induction and elongation. |

The biological processes involved in the preservation, viability, and revival of long‐term dormant dinoflagellate cysts buried in sediments remain unknown. Based on studies of plant seed physiology, we tested whether the revival of ancient cysts preserved in century‐old sediments from the Bay of Brest (France) could be stimulated by melatonin and gibberellic acid, two molecules commonly used in seed priming. Dinoflagellates were revived from sediments dated to approximately 150 years ago (156 ± 27, 32 cm depth), extending the known record age of cyst viability previously established as around one century. A culture suspension of sediments mixed with melatonin and gibberellic acid solutions as biostimulants exhibited germination of 11 dinoflagellate taxa... |

Abstract: Somatic embryogenesis from explants from hermaphrodite papaya mother plants is an alternative for the production of true-to-type plants without the need for sexing. This study aimed to analyze hormonal and osmotic inducers in different somatic embryogenesis stages in the commercial hermaphrodite hybrid papaya UENF/Caliman 01. Leaf disks from in vitro shoots originated from ex vitro hermaphrodite plants were cultured in induction medium supplemented with different concentrations of 2,4-D (6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 μM) and 4-CPA (19, 22, 25, 28, and 31 μM). After 90 days, the formation of somatic embryos was verified. The 2,4-D induced the formation of light brown calli with low frequency (20%) of somatic embryogenesis. However, 4-CPA (25 μM) induced... |
