Abstract: Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) is a research field that seeks for more sustainable analytical approaches to minimize the toxicity and amounts of wastes without hindering the analytical performance. This is a trend in Analytical Chemistry worldwide and because of the diversity of innovations on this subject, Brazil stands out as the third in the list of the main contributors to GAC, with ca. 11.2% of the published articles. Tannins, as punicalagin, represent the predominant class of bioactive substances from pomegranate, concentrating mostly in the peels and fruit mesocarp. The aim of this study was to select the wall materials (gum Arabic, Capsul? and maltodextrin) for microencapsulating by spray drying an aqueous extract with 14% insoluble solids obtained from pomegranate peels. It was observed no statistical differences on punicalagin concentration in all powdered products. However the agents Capsul? and maltodextrin were responsible for the better retention of punicalagin in the powdered product. So the stability of dried extracts makes it suitable for industrial or in agricultural applications.

Abstract Fe(II) and Fe(III) have distinct chemical and biological functions. Consequently, it is more important to determine the fraction of both oxidation state that knowing the total iron concentration in a sample. However, green methods for iron speciation are still limited. This work uses aqueous two-phase system, a safe alternative to liquid–liquid extraction, to perform the chemical speciation of iron. This method is based on the reaction of Fe(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline extractant, forming a complex of Fe(II)-phenanthroline that concentrates in the top phase of the system. Microwave-assisted solvent extraction and analysis of shikimic acid from plant tissues Planta Daninha

A better method for determination of shikimate in plant tissues is needed to monitor exposure of plants to the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and to screen the plant kingdom for high levels of this valuable phytochemical precursor to the pharmaceutical oseltamivir. A simple, rapid, and efficient method using microwave-assisted extraction (MWAE) with water as the extraction solvent was developed for the determination of shikimic acid in plant tissues. High performance liquid chromatography was used for the separation of shikimic acid, and chromatographic data were acquired using photodiode array detection. ABSTRACT Sulfuric acid digestion analyses (SAD) provide useful information to environmental studies, in terms of the geochemical balance of nutrients, parent material uniformity, nutrient reserves for perennial crops, and mineralogical composition of the soil clay fraction. Yet, these analyses are costly, time consuming, and generate chemical waste. This work aimed at predicting SAD results from portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry, which is proposed as a “green chemistry” alternative to the current SAD method. ABSTRACT: Essential oils are substances originated from plants in general. These compounds are well known to have a high biological activity, specially the antioxidant and antimicrobial. Several extraction techniques are employed to obtain these substances. However, the majority of these techniques require a long extraction time.
