Adjusting the growth curve of sugarcane varieties using nonlinear models 65
Jane,Sérgio Alberto; Fernandes,Felipe Augusto; Silva,Edilson Marcelino; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Pimentel,Guilherme Vieira.
ABSTRACT: Assessing sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) stalk growth helps to adequately manage the phenological stages of the crop. The aim of this study was to describe the height-growth curve of four sugarcane varieties (RB92579, RB93509, RB931530 and SP79-1011), in irrigated plant-cane and ratoon cane plantations, using the Logistic and Gompertz nonlinear models, while considering all deviations from assumptions. The model parameters were estimated based on the least squares method using the Gauss-Newton algorithm. To select the most suitable model, nonlinear measures, adjusted coefficient of determination (R2 adj), residual standard deviation (RSD), and corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) were used. Based on the best models, stalk height growth rates...

ANNUAL SKELETAL EXTENSION OF TWO REEF-BUILDING CORALS FROM THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN SEA 50
Charry,Henry; Alvarado,Elvira M.; Sánchez,Juan A..
The skeletal growth of the scleractinian corals Diploria labyrinthiformis (Linnaeus 1758) and Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander 1786) from Isla Grande (north of Rosario islands), Colombian Caribbean, was determined from annual extension increments revealed by X-radiography of 4-6 mm thick slabs obtained along the axis of maximum growth. The skeletal extension average rate for the last 22 years for D. labyrinthiformis was 3.8 mm year-1 (SE 0.10; N = 87). The correlation between growth of D. labyrinthiformis and hours of sunlight was significantly negative. The annual variances of sunlight enhanced annual statistically significant differences of growth in this species. M. annularis showed an average extension growth of 10.6 mm year -1 (SE 0.32; N =...

Arsenic tolerance of Microcystis novacekii (Komárek-Compère, 1974) and its arsenic decontamination potential 52
Ferreira,Fernanda Aires Guedes; Franco,Maione Wittig; Oliveira,Dirce Maria De; Magalhães,Sérgia Maria Starling; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria possess metallic ion interaction properties that should be explored with the aim of recovering arsenic (As) contaminated areas. Contamination of As is an issue of worldwide concern due to the risk of human chronic intoxication and negative environmental health effects. In this study the potential decontamination of As(III) and As(V) using cyanobacteria cultures was assessed. Microcystis novacekii (Komárek-Compere, 1974) showed normal growth in concentrations of As(V) similar to those found in natural environments contaminated with As, demonstrating its resistance to As(V). Growth rates gradually decreased upon exposure to high As(V) concentrations from 600 to 5630 mg.L-1 while As(III) affected growth from 14.7 - 85.7 mg.L-1. The...

Culture of Eisenia fetida (Annelida, Lumbricidae) on puffed rice scrap in outdoors and laboratory conditions 67
Schuldt,Miguel; Rumi,Alejandra; Gutiérrez Gregoric,Diego E; Caloni,Nicolás; Bodnar,Josefina; Revora,Natalia; Tasso,Victoria; Valenti,Mariano; Varela,Julio; De Belaustegui,Horacio.
Industrial puffed rice scrap increases the carbon/nitrogen ratio in carbon-poor biodegradable organic matter, such as broiler chicken beddings (C/N= 14.6) (droppings + sunflower husks), optimizing the composting process. In Eisenia fetida field experiences (bimonthly sampling) done on cultures managed through self-inoculation (addition of 8-16% scrap to the chicken bedding), the substrate was accepted. Population increase and cocoon production, measured 127 days after the start, were not significantly different from control plots (broiler chicken bedding). Population size expanded with a nominal (nd) and effective (ed) increase of 2.69 and 3.51 times respectively compared to the initial numbers. The carrying capacity of the different organic matter...

In situ growth of deep-sea octocorals after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill 5
Girard, Fanny; Cruz, Rafaelina; Glickman, Orli; Harpster, Tyler; Fisher, Charles R..
Although the role of deep-sea corals in supporting biodiversity is well accepted, their ability to recover from anthropogenic impacts is still poorly understood. An important component of recovery is the capacity of corals to grow back after damage. Here we used data collected as part of an image-based long-term monitoring program that started in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to develop a non-destructive method to measure in situ growth rates of Paramuricea spp. corals and characterize the impact of the spill on growth. About 200 individual coral colonies were imaged every year between 2011 and 2017 at five sites (three that were impacted by the spill and two that were not). Images were then used to test different methods for measuring...

Indices of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus thynnus) abundance derived from sale records of French purse seine catches in the Mediterranean sea 5
Labelle, Marc; Hoch, Thierry; Liorzou, Bernard; Bigot, Jean-louis.
Sampling operations are not routinely conducted in France to monitor the landings of bluefin tuna caught by purse seiners in the Mediterranean. The length, weight and age frequencies of bluefin caught by this fleet are predicted based on sale records, length-at-age and weight-length relations, trends in fishing and natural mortality rates, and other ancillary data. The resulting length frequencies are more accurate than those predicted by Liorzou and Bigot (1992) using a simpler algorithm, and are spread more evenly across adjacent size classes. Catch-per-unil-effort (CPUE) was expressed as the numbers of age 2 bluefin caught per successful seine fishing trip in the Gulf of Lions fall fishery. CPUE indices were computed by several methods, and compared to...

Mortalité de l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron: étude de la variabilité spatiale de son environnement et de sa biologie par un système d'informations géographiques (SIG) 5
Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were...

Osteohistology of the silesaurid Sacisaurus agudoensis from southern Brazil (Late Triassic) and implications for growth in early dinosaurs 42
VEIGA,FÁBIO H.; BOTHA-BRINK,JENNIFER; RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA; FERIGOLO,JORGE; SOARES,MARINA B..
Abstract: The non-dinosaurian dinosauriform silesaurids are the closest relatives of crown-group dinosaurs and are thus, important for understanding the origins of that group. Here, we describe the limb bone histology of the Late Triassic silesaurid Sacisaurus agudoensis from the Candelária Sequence of the Santa Maria Supersequence, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The sampled bones comprise eight femora and one fibula from different individuals. The microscopic analysis of all elements reveals uninterrupted fibrolamellar bone tissue indicating rapid growth. A transition to slower growing peripheral parallel-fibered bone tissue in some individuals indicates a decrease in growth rate, suggesting ontogenetic variation within the sample. The osteohistology of...

Phenology, caudex growth and age estimation of Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin (Cyatheaceae) in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil 39
Neumann,Micheline Krüger; Schneider,Paulo Henrique; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro.
Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin occurs in northeastern, southeastern and southern Brazil, being widely distributed in the last. This was a three-year study, conducted from August 2008 to July 2011, in which we evaluated C. corcovadensis in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil. For the first year (August 2008 to July 2009), we monitored 30 plants on a monthly basis in order to analyze phenological events (vegetative and reproductive) and caudex growth. We also estimated the ages of the plants. Except in June and July of 2009, monthly leaf emergence and senescence were continuous and irregular, which prevented total leaf abscission, during that first year. Leaf emergence, senescence and fertility correlated with photoperiod, temperature and plant...

Plant growth, radiation use efficiency and yield of sugarcane cultivated in agroforestry systems: An alternative for threatened ecosystems 42
SCHWERZ,FELIPE; MEDEIROS,SANDRO L.P.; ELLI,ELVIS F.; ELOY,ELDER; SGARBOSSA,JAQUELINE; CARON,BRAULIO O..
Abstract Sugarcane (Sacharum officinarum L.) monocropping has had a great socio-economic and environmental impact in Brazil, and agroforestry systems have been considered as an alternative for more sustainable production; however, there is a lack of field research under such conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth rates, radiation use efficiency and yield traits in sugarcane cultivated in the understory of Aleurites fordii, in two agroforestry arrangements and monocropping systems. A field experiment was conducted from July 2015 to June 2016 in the city of Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The radiation use efficiency, assimilate partitioning, leaf area index, absolute growth rate, net assimilation rate, number of...

Tag and recapture of European hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) off the Northwest Iberian Peninsula: First results support fast growth hypothesis 5
Pineiro, C; Rey, J; De Pontual, Helene; Goni, R.
In the first tagging experiment of European hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) conducted off the NW Iberian Peninsula to study hake growth in the wild we released 527 live tagged individuals. The survival rate after capture and tagging was 58%. Mortality during capture was positively correlated with depth of capture and negatively correlated with hake size. Fifteen months after tagging, seven individuals (1.3%) had been recaptured with times at liberty ranging from 29 to 466 days. We provide the first direct measurements of growth rates of Southern stock European hake in the wild and compare them with rates obtained from tagging experiments in other regions and with rates derived from conventional otolith age reading. The mean somatic growth rate of all...

The effect of foliar applications of a bio-stimulant derived from algae extract on the physiological behavior of lulo seedlings (Solanum quitoense cv. Septentrionale) 118
Díaz-Leguizamón,Jhon J; Chingaté-Cruz,Oscar F; Sánchez-Reinoso,Alefsi D; Restrepo-Díaz,Hermann.
The effect of foliar applications of a bio-stimulant derived from algae extract on the physiological behavior of lulo seedlings (Solanum quitoense cv. Septentrionale). Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(1):25-37. Seaweed extracts are used as nutritional supplements, biostimulants, or biofertilizers in agriculture and horticulture to increase plant growth and yield. In this experiment, foliar applications of bio-stimulant derivate from seaweed extract were tested on plant growth, leaf gas exchange properties, and proline accumulation in lulo seedlings cultivated under greenhouse conditions. Lulo plants were split into four treatments: (i) plants with soil fertilizer; (ii) plants treated only with foliar bio-stimulant sprays; (iii) a combination of soil fertilizer plus a...

The stony road to understand isotopic enrichment and turnover rates: insight into the metabolic part 5
Lefebvre, Sebastien; Dubois, Stanislas.
Trophic enrichment factors (TEF) are essential to properly and fruitfully explore stable isotope analysis in ecology. And so is the time window of food source integration, usually estimated with the turnover rates (lambda) of isotopic incorporation. On the road to provide ecologists with a general and reliable method to obtain TEF and turnover rates for diet reconstruction, isotopists start realizing that those two parameters are ultimately linked with the physiological state of organisms and that metabolic pathways are of primary importance to understand the large ranges in TEF values. In this study, we used a diet-switching experiment for seven small marine invertebrates. Changes in isotopic compositions were fitted to an exponential decay model to...
