In the male moth Agrotis ipsilon behavioural response and antennal lobe (AL) neuron sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) level. We recently showed that the neuromodulator, octopamine (OA), interacts with JH in this age-dependent olfactory plasticity. To further elucidate its role, we cloned a full cDNA encoding a protein that presents biochemical features essential to OA/tyramine receptor (AipsOAR/TAR) function. The AipsOAR/TAR transcript was detected predominantly in the antennae, the brain and, more specifically, in ALs where its expression level varied concomitantly with age. This expression plasticity indicates that AipsOAR/TAR might be involved in central processing of the pheromone signal during... |

The obese Zucker (fa/fa) rat is characterized by hyperphagia, hyperinsulinemia, an increase in fat deposition, and a hyperactivity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis in fa/fa rats is hypersensitive to stressful experimental conditions. Food deprivation even leads to a stress reaction in obese fa/fa rats. The present study was conducted to investigate the role of corticosterone in obese rats on the basal, fasting, and postprandial metabolic rate as well as on the central expression of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in these conditions. In addition, the study was aimed at clarifying whether the high levels of corticosterone in obese rats are responsible for the induction of the stress reaction to food deprivation in these... |

Over a 2-year period at the Sukamandi station (West Java, Indonesia), 87 #P. hypophthalmus$ females selected on the basis of a modal oocyte diameter greater than 1.0 mm were treated with Ovaprim (n=77) or hCG (n=10) to induce oocyte maturation and ovulation. The two hormonal treatment led to similar results in terms of ovulation percentage (86 and 90%), hatching rates (69 plus or minus 28 and 82 plus or minus 11%) and relative fecundity (167,000 plus or minus 18,000 and 128,000 plus or minus 60,000 eggs/kg, with Ovaprim and hCG respectively. The latency period between the last hormone injection and ovulation was negatively correlated to water temperature but showed important variations at a same temperature depending on individual females (e.g. between... |

Immune/inflammatory challenges, such as bacterial endotoxin, disrupt gonadotropin secretion and ovarian cyclicity. We previously determined that endotoxin can block the estradiol-induced LH surge in the ewe. Here, we investigated mechanisms underlying this suppression. First, we tested the hypothesis that endotoxin blocks the estradiol-induced LH surge centrally, by preventing the GnRH surge. Artificial follicular phases were created in ovariectomized ewes, and either endotoxin or vehicle was administered together with a surge-inducing estradiol stimulus. In each ewe in which endotoxin blocked the LH surge, the GnRH surge was also blocked. Given this evidence that endotoxin blocks the estradiol-induced LH surge at the hypothalamic level, we began to assess... |

The nutritional status influences gastric growth, and interestingly, whereas cell proliferation is stimulated by fasting in suckling rats, it is inhibited in adult animals. Corticosterone takes part in the mechanisms that govern development, and its effects are regulated in particular by corticosterone-binding globulin (CBG) and glucocorticoid receptor (GR). To investigate whether corticosterone activity responds to fasting and how possible changes might control gastric epithelial cell cycle, we evaluated different parameters during the progression of fasting in 18- and 40-day-old rats. Food restriction induced higher corticosterone plasma concentration at both ages, but only in pups did CBG binding increase after short- and long-term treatments. Fasting... |

BackgroundVariability in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity has been shown to be influenced by genetic factors and related to great metabolic differences such as obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate molecular bases of genetic variability of the adrenal sensitivity to ACTH, a major source of variability, in Meishan (MS) and Large White (LW) pigs, MS being reported to exhibit higher basal cortisol levels, response to ACTH and fatness than LW. A pig cDNA microarray was used to identify changes in gene expression in basal conditions and in response to ACTH stimulation.ResultsGenotype and/or ACTH affected the expression of 211 genes related to transcription, cell growth/maintenance, signal transduction, cell structure/adhesion/extra... |
