Therapeutic doses of 131I administered to thyrotoxic patients may cause thyroid failure. The present study used a rat model to determine thyroid function after the administration of different doses of 131I (64-277 µCi). Thirty male Fisher rats in the experimental group and 30 in the control group (untreated) were followed for 6 months. The animals were 4 months old at the beginning of the experiment and were sacrificed at an age of 9 months. Hormone concentration was determined before 131I administration (4-month-old animals) and three times following 131I administration, when the animals were 7, 8, and 9 months old. The thyroid glands were removed and weighed, their volume was determined and histopathological examination was performed at the end of the... |

This study evaluated the toxicity of hexavalent and trivalent compounds of chromium to the pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, in acute exposures of 96 h through mortality and histopathological responses. Hexavalent otassium dichromate was more toxic than trivalent compounds of chromium chloride, chromium oxide and chromium carbochelate. Sufficient mortalities occurred only with potassium dichromate to yield an LC50 value at 124.2 mg L-1. Hexavalent chromium caused reversible and irreversible lesions, which may affect organ functionality. Histopathological evaluation showed that trivalent chromium caused lesions of lower severity. Pacu subjected to different concentrations of chromium carbochelate showed no histopathological changes in the kidneys, liver, skin... |

Abstract: Liver fibrosis is the final common pathway of chronic liver diseases, having cirrhosis as a possible progression, which has liver transplantation as the only effective treatment. Human amniotic membrane represents a potential strategy as a therapy for liver fibrosis, due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic and immunomodulatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate amniotic membrane effects as a treatment for hepatic fibrosis induced in rats by bile duct ligation (BDL), verifying alterations between two different forms of amniotic membrane application, around all the lobes of the liver and around only one lobe of the liver. Two weeks after inducing fibrosis, an amniotic membrane fragment was applied to the surface of the liver,... |

ABSTRACT: Tumors affecting Bartholin’s gland are considered rare in human medicine; there are few reports in the veterinary literature, with descriptions occurring only in cows. This article described the clinical and pathological findings associated with Bartholin’s gland adenoma in a goat. Clinically, a 7-year-old pregnant Saanen goat presented bilateral enlargement of the vulva that did not regress spontaneously after parturition. Grossly, these vulvar masses were multilobulated, contained cystic areas from which oozed a whitish fluid. Histopathology revealed an adenoma characterized by the proliferation of irregularly shaped neoplastic epithelial cells that formed tubular to glandular-like structures. These neoplastic cells demonstrated moderate... |

A remarkable histopathological picture of one asymptomatic dog naturally infected with Leishmania infantum (syn. chagasi) has been presented. Intracellular parasites were ease found in macrophages of all exanimated organs, especially in skin. Embedded paraffin tissues of liver, spleen, axillary and popliteal lymph nodes, and skin (ear, muzzle and abdomen) were stained by hematoxylin and eosin and by immunocytochemical reaction (streptoavidin-peroxidase method) to detect parasites. All organs showed an intense parasitism associated to severe pathological changes. All lymph nodes had conspicuous histological architecture alterations. Lymphocytes were replaced by macrophages stuffed with an intense number of amastigotes forms of Leishmania. The lymphoid... |

Probiotics may have many effects on health and development of fish larvae. One of the most promising is related to spinal conformation, though the mode of action is not clearly understood. The present study attempted to investigate the effects of two strains of lactic acid bacteria on associated microbiota, histological development and gene expression. Sea bass larvae were fed since 5 dph (day post hatch) with either a standard control diet (Diet C), or the same diet supplemented with Pediococcus acidilactici MA18/5M (Diet P), or with an autochthonous strain of Lactobacillus casei (X2; Diet L). The two lactic acid bacteria were incorporated in the diets at the levels of 106 and 107 CFU (colony forming units) g-1 in two consecutive experiments,... |

The most frequent epigenetic alterations in Wilms tumor (WT) occur at WT2, assigned to 11p15. WT2 consists of two domains: telomeric domain 1 (DMRH19) that contains the IGF2 gene and an imprinted maternally expressed transcript (H19) and centromeric domain 2 (KvDMR) that contains the genes KCNQ1, KCNQ1OT1 and CDKN1C. In this work, we used pyrosequencing and MS-MLPA to compare the methylation patterns of DMRH19/KvDMR in blood and tumor samples from 40 WT patients. Normal constitutional KvDMR methylation indicated that most of the epigenetic alterations in WT occur at DMRH19. Constitutional DMRH19 hypermethylation (HM DMRH19) was observed in two patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Pyrosequencing and MS-MLPA showed HM DMRH19 in 28/34 tumor samples:... |

The porcine transmissible gastroenteritis is a highly severe contagious disease, caused by virus of the Coronaviridae family, genus Coronavirus. Its epizootic shape can reach a rate of up to 100% mortality in piglets under two weeks of age as a result of severe dehydration. In this study fragments of small intestine and stool samples were collected from 75 autopsied pigs from properties. The samples of the fragments were frozen and sent to the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Instituto Biológico, SP, Brazil, for histological and transmission electron microscopic analyses. According to histological H&E technique, atrophy, villous necrosis and destruction of the enterocytes were observed in 35 (46.6%) out of the 75 fragments of the small intestine... |
