Dinámica del plancton de la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
De La Hoz-Aristizabal, M.V..
In order to assess phytoplankton dynamics in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, bimonthly sampling was done at six stations from March 1996 to February 1997. Salinity showed wide ranges so the year could be divided in four seasons. Higher salinities were related to higher phytoplankton density, while lower salinities were related to lower phytoplankton densities and increased species richness. 224 taxa were recorded, and the general trend was towards a low diversity with a few dominant species, and most of them rare. Cyanophytes showed the highest abundances all year. Salinity, turbidity and orthophosphates were the environmental factors best related to the biotic data. Seasonal changes in phytoplankton concerning to meteorological conditions, fresh and...

Estudios bionómicos del bentos de la plataforma bonaerense y su relación con el resto de la plataforma continental argentina. OceanDocs
Roux, A..
The macrobenthic assemblages of the Buenos Aires Province(Argentina) continental shelf were studied from samples collected by the R/V Capitán Cánepa and R/V Capitán Oca Balda along a transect from38 m to 218 m depth. Three faunistic areas were determined, corresponding to the coastal, central and external shelf, inhabited by species originated from the Argentine and/or Magellanic Zoogeographical Provinces. These results confirm the presence of different ecological areas in the Argentine continental shelf. Mussel (Mytilus edulis platensis) beds, red porgy (Sparus pagrus) fishing ground and the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (CFZ) demersal fishing grounds at the continental shelf of Buenos Aires Province were also analyzed to increase the knowledge...

Succesional patterns on fouling plates in the Bay of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
García, C.B.; Salzwedel, H..
Successional progress was followed ¡n fouling communities, developing under tropical conditions. Primary succession was simulated by immersing asbestos plates. The plates represent small, discrete, isolated parts of habitat. According with expectations, a trend of increasing space dominancy by colonial forms was detected as succession progressed. High within-habitat diversity but global persistency was confirmed f or this tropical system. Several mechanisms of succession were found to operate simultaneously. In this Caribbean fouling system the strong self-replacement tendencies of solitary forms and the low recruitment and growth rates of the potential space dominants (colonial forms) were mostly responsible for the successional patterns observed.
