The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) caught in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S). In Argentina there are two main fishing areas, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and 'El Rincón', southern zone of the Buenos Aires littoral. The importance of the species makes it necessary to define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. The model adjusted to calculate the index is the General Linear Model. The factors used were Year, Quarter, Length, Stratum (4 categories) and sub-areas (5 categories), all statistically significant. Aplicación del método de máxima verosimilitud a la estimación de parámetros y comparación de curvas de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy. OceanDocs

With the purpose of easening its application, the theory of parameter estimation by the maximum likelihood method is presented. The theory is general and useful for linear and nonlinear models. The method is applied to the von Bertalanffy´s growth model for individual data and for mean values of length-at-age. Statistical tests to compare parameters from different population groups are presented. Problems caused by lack of verification of assumptions are discussed. An example of its application is given and results of nonlinear least squares estimations are compared to those obtained with Allen´s method. An example of application implemented on a calculus spreadsheet is attached.

Para la generación de mapas digitales de inundación es necesario tener presente los conceptos de cartografía y modelación numérica de tsunamis, usando como nexo a los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG). La utilización SIG no es nuevo en el modelamiento de tsunamis, sin embargo el uso general de esta técnica en países como el Ecuador es reciente. Estandarización del esfuerzo de pesca ejercido sobre el abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) en aguas Argentinas. Período 1986-1996. OceanDocs

If the fishing effort is properly standardized, the catch per unit of effort may be proportional to biomass (C/f=q x B(med)). A multiplicative factorial model was applied to the ling Genypterus blacodes catch and effort data by the Argentine bottom trawl fleet recorded between 1986 and 1996. The relative fishing power of the fleet strata was estimated and the effort standardized to obtain normalized CPUEs. Provided they were estimated in the same spatial and temporal situation, there were no differences between the normalized CPUE and the nominal CPUE because ling is caught mainly as by-catch in the Argentine hake fishery. A general picture of the spatial and temporal distribution of ling as reflected by the commercial fleet operations was also obtained.

This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Estratificación y estimación de los rendimientos de la flota de buques procesadores congeladores arrastreros. OceanDocs

In order to better understand the behaviour of the trawler processing freezer fleet in the Argentine Sea, an analysis of yields and structural characteristics for the 1989-98 period was carried out. The relationship between structural variables and yield expressed in kilos per day was explained with a simplified asymptotic model. The fleet was divided into four homogeneous strata. Common hake is the target of stratum I and stratum II which are deeply affected by overfishing of the species. As of 1993, in stratum III, common hake was replaced by other pelagic and demersal species, mainly hoki. In fleet stratum IV southern blue whiting and hoki were caught. Catches of the latter increased during the last three years.

Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri)has a broad distribution along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from Mexico to the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the southern end of distribution, Argentina and Uruguay catch the species with different commercial fleet types bay or creek, coastal and off-shore and modalities of bottom trawling with doors and paired trawling. Maximum catches of both countries, that reached 60,000 t, were registered between 1995 and 1997. Two dynamic production models were applied to assess the status of ling Genypterus blacodes stock in the SW Atlantic. The simplest (biomass dynamic model)and a more complex one (structured production model) were fitted with commercial CPUEs as abundance indices. Ling is one of the most important demersal fishes in Argentine waters. It is a demersal fish found between 35°and 55°S that shows the highest concentration in summer, between 42°and 48°S. In winter, schools disperse over the whole range of distribution. Argentine ling fishery started developing in 1986 when catches surpassed 15000 mt/year to stabilize, in recent years, at around 23000 mt/year. Brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis), of wide latitudinal distribution (23° S-47° S), is caught in Argentina in two coastal areas north and south of the Province of Buenos Aires delimited by the 39° S latitude. La présente étude a pour objectif la mise en place d’un système de modélisation numérique de la dynamique marine près des côtes Tunisiennes. Pour cela on imbrique un modèle de circulation de l’eau près des côtes Tunisiennes dans un modèle de circulation générale de la mer Méditerranée. La grille du modèle des côtes Tunisiennes comporte la ossibilité d’augmenter la résolution dans un domaine ciblé. Les conditions initiales pour ce modèle étiré sont obtenues par interpolation des états simulés par le modèle côtier à résolution constante. Vu sa résolution plus élevée, le modèle à grille étirée nécessite un long temps de calcul. The problem in the definition of a relative annual abundance index using a General Linear Model is posed. The possible factors generating changes in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) are discussed and the parameterization of the model is analyzed, in particular the Sigma-restrictive parameterization. The structure of the chemical – biological block of two-dimensional mathematical model of ecosystem and shallow reservoir and his methods of calibration is described in detail. The model includes the balance equations for the following components of ecosystem: phytoplankton, bacteria, zooplankton, dead (organic) matter, phosphate, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and dissolved oxygen. Results of calculations of spatial distribution of several components of the ecosystem for the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta coastal lagoon (Colombia) in various seasons of year are given.

This species is a principal basic product of the local canned industry. The results show that the biomass and capture were variable for the studied period as a consequence of change in the capturability, and the fishstock is underexploited. Stock assessment of the bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus) in Azorean waters during the 1990-2002 period, applying a biomass dynamic model OceanDocs

Bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus), a benthic fish mostly inhabiting at depths between 500 m and 600 m, represents a highly valuable economic resource for local fishermen at the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic). Nominal catches of bluemouth increased from 1990 through 1994, and declined afterwards reaching in 1999 the lowest value recorded. Standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) was used as an index for stock relative abundance; a General Linear Model, considering several factors that may have affected the fishing efficiency of commercial vessels, was run to obtain this CPUE index. Based on the Schaefer production model, an stochastic model is described, that is a model in which noises perturbing biomass and measurements are considered, serving to describe random variations in mortality and recruitment as well as some inaccuracies in measurements taken. The model is discrete, linear and adaptable, and the parameters biomass and noises intensities are restimated with each new measurement obtained. The problem of regulation is solved, on the basis of the model described, through fishing effort that should be applied to keep biomasss close to equilibrium. Предложен подход для анализа экспоненциальной и линейной фаз роста культуры микроводорослей. Модель основана на наличии лимитирующих факторов и их последовательном влиянии на рост при накопительном способе культивирования. Показано, что наличие линейной фазы свидетельствует о лимитировании роста углекислым газом, а продуктивность культуры прямо пропорциональна величине потока С02. Проанализирована точка сопряжения экспоненциальной и линейной фаз.
