Farmer-based financing of operations in the Niger Valley irrigation schemes 31

Presents the results of case-studies of the functioning of four pump-based irrigation systems in the Niger River Valley. Prospects for sustainability are analyzed, especially in the light of the government's policy of promoting irrigator organizations to take over responsibilities for operation and maintenance.

Gender and irrigation in India: the Women's Irrigation Group of Jambar, South Gujarat 31

Documents a "best practice" - a successful gender-balanced irrigation intervention in which women were given control over an irrigation technology. The study evaluates the approach taken by the implementing NGO, the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, in terms of its replicability in other areas where women share in farm activities and decision making.

This paper is a substantially revised version of a draft paper previously circulated to some officials in Sri Lanka. The title of that paper was "Testing a New Field Channel Design: A Pilot Project of the Uda Walawe Rehabilitation Project, Sri Lanka. It was reviewed by the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) - Sri Lanka Consultative" Consultative Committee at its January 1988 meeting; as the minutes of that meeting indicate, the Committee members recognized- the significance of the main findings of the draft report, and agreed that physical rehabilitation by itself could be counter productive unless supported by proper institutional changes. Promoting Sustainable Market Institutions in the Transition Economies: the Role of International Assistance 31

This paper examines the role of international technical assistance in building the institutions critical to the success of market reform in the Transition Economies. While there have been many successful grass roots projects aimed at helping individual firms or associations compete in the market, projects aimed at institution building (credit markets, market information, agricultural extension, food safety and animal health regulations, etc.) are not always so successful. These projects succeed only when the recipient Government truly buys into the project and is willing to commit its own resources.
