Antioxidant Mechanisms of Polyphenolic Caffeic Acid Oligomers, Constituents of Salvia officinalis 48
BORS,WOLF; CHRISTA,MICHEL; STETTMAIER,KURT; YINRONG,LU; L. YEAP,FOO.
Caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid and oligomers of caffeic acid with multiple catechol groups are all constituents of Salvia officinalis. Their antioxidant potential was investigated with regard to their radical scavenging activity and the stability and structure of the intermediate radicals. Pulse-radiolytic studies revealed very high rate constants with hydroxyl radicals. Evidence from kinetic modeling calculations suggested an unusual complex behavior due to the presence of both O4- and O3-semiquinones and formation and decay of a hydroxyl radical adduct at the vinyl side chain. The radical structures observed by EPR spectroscopy after autoxidation in slightly alkaline solutions were only partially identified due to their instability and generally...

Kinetic study on inducibility of polygalacturonases from Aspergillus flavipes FP-500 69
Martínez-Trujillo,Aurora; Aranda,Juan S; Aguilar-Osorio,Guillermo.
The aim of this work was to describe growth dynamics, substrate depletion and polygalacturonases production by Aspergillus flavipes FP-500 in batch cultures by means of unstructured models. The microorganism was cultivated on several mono- di- and poly- saccharides, and then the culture development modeled with Monod and Leudeking-Piret equations. The kinetic parameters related to the models (µmax, γx/s, α and β) were obtained by minimizing the quadratic residuals function with a simplex algorithm. An accurate description of experimental data was attained with the proposed models. Besides, modeling provided significant kinetic information on microbial degradation of complex substrates, such as the correlation between specific...

PEACH PIT CHEMICALLY TREATED BIOMASS AS A BIOSORBENT FOR METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE REMOVAL: MODELING AND SORPTION MECHANISMS 70
Hellmann,Liliane; Schmitz,Ana P. de O.; Módenes,Aparecido N.; Hinterholz,Camila L.; Antoniolli,Camila de A..
ABSTRACT In this work, the potential of peach pit biosorption in the removal of the drug metformin hydrochloride from water is evaluated. Experiments are carried out in a closed batch system to evaluate the effect of the solution pH (2–10), temperature (25, 35 and 45 °C), stirring (100, 150 and 200 rpm) and chemical treatments. During the study, biosorbent characterization, kinetic tests, equilibrium tests and thermodynamic parameter calculations are performed. The operating conditions that show the best results for both the raw biosorbent and the biosorbent submitted to acid, basic and acid followed by basic treatments with removal capacities of 3.17, 10.83, 18.10 and 49.14 mg g−1, respectively, are pH 7, 25 °C and 100 rpm, which result in an equilibrium...

Predictive ageing of elastomers: Oxidation driven modulus changes for polychloroprene 5
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Celina, Mathew; Roux, Gerard; Verdu, Jacques; Davies, Peter; Fayolle, Bruno.
The oxidative ageing in the range of 60 °C–140 °C of sulfur vulcanized polychloroprene has been studied by FTIR spectroscopy (double bond consumption), modulus changes and oxygen absorption measurements. Experiments were carried out on thin films and thick samples to investigate both homogeneous and inhomogeneous (diffusion controlled) oxidation with the goal of establishing the underlying correlation between oxidative degradation chemistry and mechanical property changes. A correlation between oxidatively driven degradation chemistry and modulus is possible using the established approaches of rubber elasticity where an effective crosslinking yield due to double bond reactions is of the order of 30% for this material (i.e. the loss of 3 double bonds...

Thermal oxidation of Poly(dicyclopentadiene)– kinetic modeling of double bond consumption 5
Huang, Jing; David, Adelina; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Lorthioir, Cedric; Coelho, Cristina; Richaud, Emmanuel.
This paper reports chemical changes that occur in polydicyclopentadiene during thermal oxidation at several temperatures and oxygen pressures. A particular attention was paid to the double bond consumption since these latter are associated with crosslinking and subsequent changes in mechanical properties. A kinetic model was derived from the experimental results. Its rate constants were assessed from the “inverse approach” based on their selective identification under specific ageing conditions (for example under oxygen excess). The resulting model satisfactorily describes both carbonyl formation and double bond consumption for a wide range of temperature and oxygen pressure for the first time. This can be exploited to predict the changes of local...
