Pathological effects of the microsporidium Nosema ceranae on honey bee queen physiology (Apis mellifera) Inra

Nosema ceranae, a microsporidian parasite originally described in the Asian honey bee Apis cerana, has recently been found to be cross-infective and to also parasitize the European honey bee Apis mellifera. Since this discovery, many studies have attempted to characterize the impact of this parasite in A. mellifera honey bees. Nosema species can infect all colony members, workers, drones and queens, but the pathological effects of this microsporidium has been mainly investigated in workers, despite the prime importance of the queen, who monopolizes the reproduction and regulates the cohesion of the society via pheromones. An experiment was performed to test the hypothesis that restricted growth patterns during winter 2 (W2) would affect subsequent performance of dairy heifers born during winter 1 (W1) and going through first calving at 36 mo of age. The study used simultaneously two INRA experimental herds in two different parts of France (Le Pin-au-Haras and Mirecourt), totalling 158 heifers born during three successive winters (1994–1997). All animals were followed from birth until the day of culling. Animal breeds were Holstein (Ho) and Normande (No) at Le Pin-au-Haras, and Holstein (Ho) and Montbeliarde (Mo) at Mirecourt. The effect of mandibular gland extirpation on the longevity and attractiveness of workers of queen honey bees, apis mellifera National Institute of Agronomic Research

The mandibular glands were extirpated from 6 of 12 mated, sister queen honey bees, 1 month old. Two of the modified and five of the untreated queens survived after being held for about 11 months in otherwise normal colonies. The modified queens were almost completely unattractive to worker bees at the end of the experiment. The brood quantity and quality in the colonies headed by modified queens was not very dissimilar from those found in the check colonies.
