Effect of host age on the oviposition and performance of Ascia monuste Godart (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) 82

Ascia monuste Godart, known as the kale caterpillar, has a specialized diet on Brassicaceae and represents one of the main herbivores of this family in the Neotropical region. The objective of the present study was to determine the performance and oviposition preference of A. monuste for common kale Brassica oleracea (Brassicaceae, var. acephala) of different ages. The parameters used to assess performance were time to pupation and emergence, emergence rate, digestive indices, relative consumption and growth rates, number of eggs per female, hatching rate, and weight of the imagoes. Gas exchange and plant growth after defoliation on Leandra lacunosa, a cerrado woody species with continuous leaf production 52

Morphological and physiological leaf traits were studied on control and defoliated potted Leandra lacunosa young plants. After defoliation, remaining bottom leaves showed no significant change in net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance values with time, but the leaf transpiration rate was higher. The production of the new leaves was greater after defoliation in top defoliated plants. Bottom defoliated plants increased stem extension rates and net photosynthesis transitorily. Two months after defoliation, control and defoliated plants did not differ in stem length and root dry mass values. Intensity of bitterness of processed yerba mate leaves originated in two contrasted light environments 52

The bitterness intensity of beverage prepared from the leaves produced on the males and females of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), grown in the forest understory and monoculture, was evaluated. The leaves were grouped by their position (in the crown and on the branch tips) and by the leaf age. The leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were observed. Inter and intra-specific competition for light and self-shading showed the same effect on yerba mate beverage taste. All the shading types resulted in bitterer taste of the processed yerba mate leaves compared to the leaves originated under the direct sun exposure.
