Growth and leaf demography of two Cecropia species Rev. Bras. Bot.

Allometry, growth and leaf demography of two Cecropia species, one with ant mutualist (C. glazioui) and another without it (C. hololeuca), were studied in an Atlantic Rain Forest area in the State of Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. Stem diameter was allometrically related to height in both species. Cecropia glazioui showed higher annual growth rates and longer internodes than C. hololeuca. Leaf phenology showed a seasonal pattern in both species, but the number of leaves on each plant was more variable along the year in C. hololeuca than in C. glazioui. Survivorship curves for leaves were intermediate between Deevey's Type I and Type II curves, with young leaves of C. glazioui showing a greater survival rate and life expectancy than those of C. hololeuca. Is whole-plant photosynthetic rate proportional to leaf area? A test of scalings and a logistic equation by leaf demography census. OAK

Allometric scalings and a logistic equation assume that whole-plant photosynthetic rate under resource-unlimited conditions is proportional to leaf area. We tested this proportionality for the herb Helianthus tuberosus. During growth, we repeatedly measured the percentage of leaves with high, medium, and low photosynthetic capacity to estimate the whole-plant sum of photosynthetic capacity. We found that the whole-plant sum of the light-saturated photosynthetic rate of leaves is proportional to the whole-plant leaf area, disregarding the dynamics of the leaf population. We also found that the daily photosynthesis of each leaf appeared as a linear function of the light-saturated photosynthetic rate of that leaf, as predicted by the optimization theory....
