Unusual events and disturbances are important sources of variability in ecological data sets, but methods for their detection and analysis are not readily available. We have adapted widely-used quality control methods to identify and quantify unusual events in ten-year-long data sets from the relatively pristine North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA.-Seasonal patterns and long-term trends were first removed from biweekly zooplankton and nekton abundance and corresponding water temperature and salinity data using nonparametic smoothing algorithms. The Shewhart Control Chart Method, a quantitative technique used for quality control in industrial manufacturing processes, was used to define four types of events according to intensity and duration.... |

The paper describes the derivation and effectiveness of a benthic macrofauna environmental quality standard (EQS). The EQS is derived from a continuing, long-term (24 years) monitoring programme, designed to determine the effect of mining effluent discharged into coastal waters off the NE coast of England. The area under study is at the Cleveland Potash mine at Boulby. Benthic monitoring began there in 1970 and live years of baseline data were gathered before discharge commenced in 1974. During the course of the monitoring programme (1970-1993) annual surveys have been completed at the discharge point and at more distant reference sites. The complete data set includes results from over 1000 benthic grab samples. The effect of the discharge is clearly... |

Changes in the Tellina tenuis population in Dublin Bay, Ireland since 1977 are described. Population density at the monitoring site increased from 260 m(-2) (although a maximum density of 548 m(-2) was found nearby) in 1977 to a peak of 434 m(-2) in 1989. Densities recently have been the lowest recorded, around 170 m(-2). These changes do not seem to have been associated with any change in elevation of the site. The population structure has changed considerably, from one dominated by larger, older animals in 1977, when there did not seem to have been any significant recruitment for the previous two years, to one in which recruitment, if not in any great numbers, has at least been more or less regular, with the last two years (1993 and 1994) showing the... |

At a time when there is a great deal of talk of the degradation of the coastal environment and of biodiversity being threatened, we felt it would be of interest to sample the macrofauna of five sites at five metres depth in well sorted fine sand at a thirty-year interval (1966-1996), using the same techniques. Four seasonal samplings provided comparative data at each site on the species richness (S), density (N) and biomass (B). The S values are comparable and even on the increase at two stations. Nevertheless, we observed a general tendency towards decline in the relative abundance of the crustacean group. From the quantitative point of view (N and B), the changes observed would appear to result from the impact of clearly identifiable human pressure, such... |

Liver fibrosis is the most common outcome of chronic liver diseases, and its progression to cirrhosis can only be effectively treated with liver transplantation. The amniotic membrane (AM) has been studied as an alternative therapy for fibrosis diseases mainly for its favorable properties, including anti-inflammatory, anti-scaring and immunomodulatory properties. It was recently demonstrated that the AM reduces the progression of biliary fibrosis to its advanced stage, cirrhosis, when applied on the liver for 6 weeks after fibrosis induction. Here, we investigated the effects of AM on rat fibrotic liver, during a prolonged period of time. Fibrosis was induced by bile duct ligation (BDL), and at the same time, a fragment of AM was applied around the liver.... |

The results of a 14-year survey of the populations of L. saxatilis and L. obtusata from one locality in the Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea are presented. The periwinkles were found to be hosts of 10 castrating trematode species. Microphallus piriformes was the most abundant species with infection prevalence often exceeding 50%. Year-to-year variation of the infection prevalence was correlated in the two host species, probably reflecting fluctuations in the influx of trematode eggs to the shore. Long-term changes in population density are associated with the variation of the age structure of the winkles, suggesting a dependence of the population density on the success of the recruitment. Fluctuations in abundance and age composition were correlated in L.... |
