Abnormalities of hippocampal signal intensity in patients with familial mesial temporal lobe epilepsy 56

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is associated with hippocampal atrophy and hippocampal signal abnormalities. In our series of familial MTLE (FMTLE), we found a high proportion of hippocampal abnormalities. To quantify signal abnormalities in patients with FMTLE we studied 152 individuals (46 of them asymptomatic) with FMTLE. We used NIH-Image® for volumetry and signal quantification in coronal T1 inversion recovery and T2 for all cross-sections of the hippocampus. Values diverging by 2 or more SD from the control mean were considered abnormal. Cerebral blood flow and vasoreactivity in aging: an arterial spin labeling study 56

Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in young and elderly participants were assessed using pulsed arterial spin labeling (ASL) and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques in combination with inhalation of CO2. Pulsed ASL and BOLD-MRI were acquired in seventeen asymptomatic volunteers (10 young adults, age: 30±7 years; 7 elderly adults, age: 64±8 years) with no history of diabetes, hypertension, and neurological diseases. Odotogenic myxoma is a benign tumor which presents in 3% to 6% of all odontogenic tumors. According to the WHO classification, multiple radiolucent areas of varying size, separated by straight or curved bony septa with poorly defined borders are the radiologic characteristics of the condition. We report the case of maxillary odontogenic myxoma in a 21 year old man. The radiological feature of the current case was interesting, due to the size of the lesion and severe displacement of the upper third molar.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the non-invasive detection of coronary abnormalities and specifically the remodeling process in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). MRI was performed in 10 control healthy subjects and 26 patients with angiographically proven CAD of the right coronary (RCA) or left anterior descending (LAD) artery; 23 patients were within two months of acute coronary syndromes, and 3 had stable angina with a positive test for ischemia. Temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) is characterized by progressive osseous proliferation of the stylohyoid and petrous temporal bones. Generally, diagnosis is confirmed by guttural pouch endoscopy and skull radiography. In the present case, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed in a 6-month-old Thoroughbred foal showing signs of head tilt and unilateral ear droop, consistent with the presence of a vestibular disease and unilateral facial paralysis. This is a comparative study between manual volumetry (MV) and voxel based morphometry (VBM) as methods of evaluating the volume of brain structures in magnetic resonance images. The volumes of the hippocampus and the amygdala of 16 panic disorder patients and 16 healthy controls measured through MV were correlated with the volumes of gray matter estimated by optimized modulated VBM. The chosen structures are composed almost exclusively of gray matter. Reported neuroimaging studies have shown functional and morphological changes of temporal lobe structures in panic patients, but only one used a volumetric method. The aim of the present study was to determine the volume of temporal lobe structures in patients with panic disorder, measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Eleven panic patients and eleven controls matched for age, sex, handedness, socioeconomic status and years of education participated in the study. Individual monitoring of gonad development in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis by in vivo magnetic resonance imaging 5

Previous studies have shown that magnetic resonance imaging is a very appropriate non-invasive technique for quantifying the growth of somatic and gonadic tissues and sex determination in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Despite a thinner gonad, harder to distinguish than that of the Pacific oyster, we showed in this study that it was possible to distinguish and quantify the development of the gonad of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, using a 3D MRI sequence with a suitable finer resolution. Aspergillosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is an uncommon infection, mainly found in immunocompromised patients but rarely seen among immunocompetent patients. Herein we describe a 57 year-old immunocompetent man who suffered intracranial aspergillosis spread by the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) following a tooth extraction. Based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, in this report we focus on the spreading routes of CNS aspergillosis via communicative structures of the PPF, the relationship between clinical manifestations and the locations of the lesion, and propose a therapeutic strategy to improve the prognosis.

Lissencephaly in a Pekingese 19

A 1-year-old neutered male Pekingese was presented for evaluation and further treatment of cluster seizures. The dog had behavioral abnormalities, and a prosencephalic lesion was suspected following neurological examination. The dog showed signs of learning difficulty. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a remarkably smooth cerebral cortex with a reduced number of gyri, as well as a cystic lesion associated with the quadrigeminal cistern. A diagnosis of lissencephaly, concurrent with a quadrigeminal cisternal cyst, was made. High-dose and multiple anticonvulsants were necessary to control the seizures. This is the first report of lissencephaly in a Pekingese. © 2017 The Japanese Society of Veterinary Science.
