This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. A granulometric gradient, from very fine to coarse sediments, appears in two directions: from the coast towards the high sea, and from the west to the east. Rocky substrates disrupt the sediment distribution, with, most of the time, a concentration of coarse sediments near the... |

A fishery resource profile for Moree has been developed to help in exploring linkages between migration dynamics and the organisation and management of fishery activities in the study community. The biophysical study component of the Small Scale Fisheries in Africa project involves the following: (a) an assessment of the quality and quantity of fish and marine resources available to the community including best estimates of current fish stocks and natural patterns affecting their availability, (b) a review of the main types of fishing technologies used to exploit fish stocks in the community, (c) any significant qualitative and quantitative changes in fish stocks which have been documented in recent years, and (d) an assessment of the main biological and... |

Abstract The dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, is a well-known and widespread marine fish assessed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Analyzing the genetic diversity of this species is, therefore, of utmost importance and necessary for conservation purposes. Microsatellites are molecular tools with advantages that are ideal for population analyses. This study provides the first set of species-specific microsatellite loci for E. marginatus that can be applied when assessing both intra- and interpopulation genetic variation. Twenty microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the dusky grouper by genotyping 20 individuals obtained from the North Eastern Atlantic Ocean (n = 4) and from the South Western... |

The African Process for the Development and Protection of the Coastal and Marine Environment, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, has progressed from mere words and resolutions to concrete action. Through this regional initiative, A f r i c a n countries developed key strategies to address the global oceans and coasts challenges within the overall context of sustainable development. As we prepare for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the biggest event ever to be hosted on African soil, the onus is ever more pressing upon us to realise our responsibilities and to ensure that we actively bring about sustainable development in Africa. We must not lose sight of the overall objectives of the African Process – to eradicate poverty and to ensure... |

While Tanzania’s system of designating terrestrial parks and protected areas has been historically exclusionary, recent conservation initiatives are acknowledging the need to involve local people in these programs and to provide benefits to resource-dependent communities. New policies for protecting marine resources are also following this approach. Government agencies, in collaboration with external institutions, are now experimenting with systems of community-based marine resource management through the establishment of non-exclusionary Marine Protected Areas, involving local user groups in both management and benefit regimes. The fugitive nature of marine resources, together with diffuse user groups that cannot be defined as traditional “communities,”... |

The perception of ocean areas by policy-makers or by people, living or not on the coast, has significantly varied over centuries. Due to its vastness and complexity, the sea has been studied within distinct academic disciplines. However, the current issues related to the sea, such as climate change, marine pollution or coastal tourism, require an integrated vision of the assets and drawbacks in order to meet the challenges arising from human activities both at sea and onshore. In this study, a group of foresight officers from the French network of public research institutes decided to cross-check and compare several science approaches (biology, sociology, economics, etc) about oceans. Thus, 11 sectors of maritime activity (transportation, fisheries,... |

Biodiversity is a holistic concept which encompasses what the scientific literature describes as inter-specific diversity (diversity between species), intra-specific diversity (genetic diversity) and diversity of ecosystems. As a support of life, the preservation of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine habitats is of primary importance for the ecological balance of the Earth. Moreover, it is essential for human beings whose lifestyle depends on nature. The value of biodiversity lies with the opportunities provided to mankind to adapt to a changing environment. Concerning specifically the seas and oceans that constitute ¾ of the planet and 90% of the biosphere, there is a renewed ‘ecological awareness’ at the global level on the need to preserve marine... |

Abstract—In collaboration with local stakeholders, Frontier-Tanzania is collecting biophysical information to facilitate effective management initiatives for Misali Island, where marine resource management is currently limited to a 1.4-km2 non-extraction zone within a 21.6-km2 conservation area. In the study reported here, the extraction and non-extraction zones at Misali Island with similar substrata were compared. Data analysis showed a significant disassociation in both abundance and mean length patterns of fish families found in each zone. Further analysis using t-tests on individual families showed that some groups were significantly more abundant in either zone, but without significant differences of mean lengths. Fish family abundance and length... |
