IOC for UNESCO. |
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO was founded in 1960 to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity-building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decision-making processes of its Member States. IOC plays a key role as a global broker involving the promotion of science innovation, nurturing programmes, transferring, disseminating and sharing information, data and knowledge, best practices, assessment and scientific services related to Oceanography. This process is done in an inclusive and... |

The material on the "Black Sea Data Management Guide" are prepared in accordance with the working plans of the IOC Committee on International Data and Information Exchange (IODE) and its regional component in the Black Sea region to assist specialists of the Black Sea countries in the field of Data Management. The Guide includes the following items: • national oceanographic data centres, designated national agencies, other marine centres and institutions of the Black Sea region countries dealing with problems of oceanographic data; • current international and national projects and programs of the Black Sea region countries; • preliminary catalogue marine observation in the Black Sea; • bibliography of publications of the marine centres and institute of the... |

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea has been signed by a majority of states, and therefore, without any prejudice to the eventual outcome of ratifications, it is prudent for the Working Committee for International Oceanographic Data Exchange to consider the possible effects of the Convention upon its responsibilities and procedures. This note consists of a commentary upon the general principles within the Convention, and is not the official view of the Natural Environment Research Council, the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, or Her Majesty's Government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. No legalistic interpretation of the articles of the COnvention is implied or intended. |

Development of an African repository for electronic publications in marine science and oceanography Realisations in 2004 – Planning of 2005 The goal of OdinPubAfrica is to develop an electronic platform to collect scientific documents (articles, conference papers, working papers …) produced by members of African research institutes in the field of oceanography and marine science. A two year project was accepted by the government of Flanders in the FUST–program to realize the goal. The University Library of LUC (Belgium) is coordinating the project, which started officially on August 1, 2005. |

The OceanDocs Network has been created to provide a multi institutional distributed network of OceanDocs Central and institutional, regional and national repositories to provide a unique access point to marine science publications and research. Until 2011, its’ development had been loosely guided by cooperation between IODE, University of Hasselt, Belgium, and regional Oceanographic Data and Information Networks (ODIN). This first session of the OceanDocs Steering Group builds on the earlier work and takes the OceanDocs Network into the future with a formalized structure and agreed policies. |

This second volume of a guide to integrated coastal zone management opens a new dimension by discussing the processes involved in a more complete and dynamic way than the first, To fulfil1 this requirement, an expanded work group, drawing upon the knowledge of experts in political science, economics, and sociology, devoted over two years of effort (1999 - 2001) to its completion, following a disciplined working method. A dual principle prevailed in the application of this method. On one hand, it prescribed an approach structured as a series of steps, and on the other, it demanded that real situations be brought to light, emphasizing case studies of experience with or analysis of coastal management. |

During the year under review, attention was focussed on the survey of white shrimp fishery and its mechanisation status in Nigeria. Survey results indicate that at sea, the crayfish beam trawl fishery is all year round, but rough from July to September. Catches are therefore better from October and best between December and June. However, where rains are heavy and early, stow net shrimp fishery at sea is best from January to March. Within the year a series of violent Swells/sourges devastate the Victoria Island beach in Lagos. The preliminary survey of the Institute showed that nourished beach is slightly above the level of the Ahmadu Bellow way. The present low nature of the beach was not adequate enough to absorb the shock impounded by the swell,... |

The first phase of a coastal fisheries survey initiated in 1991, with the assistance of the World Bank, was completed in March 1996. The survey found that several inherent parameters are critical to all the main fisheries and these factors severally affect fishing operations. These critical factors include currents as they moderate fish movements and behaviour, lunar cycle, seasonal disruptions, inappropriate improvisation, coastal perturbations, scarcity of fuel wood, menace by trawlers, piracy and increasing costs. Appropriate policies and strategies to redress these critical factors and other disincentives should contribute to evitalising and sustaining small-scale coastal and marine fisheries in Nigeria. The relocation of the institute’s fish farm... |
