Antimutagenic and antirecombinagenic activities of noni fruit juice in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster Anais da ABC (AABC)
FRANCHI,LEONARDO P.; GUIMARAES,NILZA N.; ANDRADE,LAISE R. DE; ANDRADE,HELOISA H.R. DE; LEHMANN,MAURICIO; DIHL,RAFAEL R.; CUNHA,KENYA S..
Noni, a Hawaiian name for the fruit of Morinda citrifolia L., is a traditional medicinal plant from Polynesia widely used for the treatment of many diseases including arthritis, diabetes, asthma, hypertension and cancer. Here, a commercial noni juice (TNJ) was evaluated for its protective activities against the lesions induced by mitomycin C (MMC) and doxorrubicin (DXR) using the Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) in Drosophila melanogaster. Three-day-old larvae, trans-heterozygous for two genetic markers (mwh and flr3 ), were co-treated with TNJ plus MMC or DXR. We have observed a reduction in genotoxic effects of MMC and DXR caused by the juice. TNJ provoked a marked decrease in all kinds of MMC- and DXR-induced mutant spots, mainly due...

Comparison between the micronucleus frequencies of kidney and gill erythrocytes in tilapia fish, following mitomycin C treatment Genet. Mol. Biol.
Palhares,Dario; Grisolia,Cesar Koppe.
The frequencies of mitomycin C and cyclophosphamide-induced kidney and gill erythrocyte micronuclei were compared in Tilapia rendalli and Oreochromis niloticus. Cyclophosphamide (CP) and mitomycin C (MMC) were previously used to investigate fish sensitivity to micronuclei induction in kidney erythrocytes. Fish were treated with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (40 mg/kg) or mitomycin C (2 mg/kg). Peripheral blood samples and kidney blood samples were obtained, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 15 days after the intra-abdominal injection of MMC. T. rendalli showed to be more sensitive than O. niloticus to micronuclei production. Both compounds were used at the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), and mitomycin C proved to be more toxic than cyclophosphamide. The frequency of...

Intraoperative topical administration of mitomycin C, in different concentrations, on the cicatrization of mioplasties of the dorsal rectus of rabbits Ciência Rural
Mamede,Fabrício Villela; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Souza,Ana Letícia Groszewicz; Brunelli,Adriana Torrecilhas Jorge; Pontin,Karina; Soares,Edson Garcia; Albuquerque,Sérgio de; Laus,José Luiz.
Myoplasties of the extraocular muscle may cause adhesions between the operated muscle and the adjacent tissues, commonly generating cicatricial strabismus. With the purpose of reducing to a minimum the occurrence of adhesion, the effects of mitomycin C, an antifibrotic agent, were studied in concentrations of 0.008%, 0.02%, and 0.04% applied during intraoperative of myoplasties of the superior rectus muscle of rabbits. Fifty six animals were divided in five groups. During the postoperative, the operated areas were washed with physiological solution. Eye drop instillation to prevent inflammation and bacterial infection were used. The method to analyze the results consisted of clinical and histological evaluation and statistical analyzes. We also evaluated...

The influence of organic solvents on estimates of genotoxicity and antigenotoxicity in the SOS chromotest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Quintero,Nathalia; Stashenko,Elena E.; Fuentes,Jorge Luis.
In this work, the toxicity and genotoxicity of organic solvents (acetone, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane, dimethylsulfoxide, ethanol, ether and methanol) were studied using the SOS chromotest. The influence of these solvents on the direct genotoxicity induced by the mutagens mitomycin C (MMC) and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO) were also investigated. None of the solvents were genotoxic in Escherichia coli PQ37. However, based on the inhibition of protein synthesis assessed by constitutive alkaline phosphatase activity, some solvents (carbon tetrachloride, dimethylsulfoxide, ethanol and ether) were toxic and incompatible with the SOS chromotest. Solvents that were neither toxic nor genotoxic to E. coli (acetone, dichloromethane and methanol)...
