Acetylcholine in the larval food, honey, and stored pollen of a stingless bee, Melipona quadrifasciata National Institute of Agronomic Research

1) Using several methods, the larval food of Melipona quadrifasciata was found to contain amounts of acetylcholine estimated to range between O. 5 and 2.0 mg. equivalents of acetylcholine chloride per gram of larval food. Similar amounts have been reported for the larval food of the honey, bee, Apis mellifera. 2) The larval food of M. quadrifasciata was also found to contain a large amount of choline and an unidentified substance that was soluble in ethanol, gave a blue fluorescence, reacted with Dragendorf's reagent, and had a weak acetylcholine-like action. Effets de facteurs sociaux sur la résistance de l’abeille Apis mellifera au parasite Nosema ceranae Inra

--BUTS DE L'ETUDE :Etudier les effets du nombre d’abeilles, de la présence de QMP (phéromone mandibulaire de la reine) et de la résistance naturelle au Varroa sur la résistance de l’abeille Apis mellifera au parasite Nosema ceranae.--METHODES & TECHNIQUES :Expériences en laboratoire dans des cagettes avec les différents facteurs. Analyse statistique avec le logiciel XLStat.--RESULTATS :Le Nosema augmente la mortalité dans les groupes de 30 et 100 abeilles avec ou sans QMP. La QMP diminue la mortalité des cagettes de 5 abeilles et améliore leur résistance au parasite. Les cagettes de 5 abeilles ont une mortalité plus élevée. The rate of increase of population in societies of social insects obviously depends upon the numbers of adults which can be produced per head of the adult population. Ideally, the numbers of eggs laid should be just appropriate to this situation, so that the prevailing food supply may be efficiently transformed.

The transmission of food between worker honeybees National Institute of Agronomic Research

1. A study has been made of the behaviour patterns associated with food transmission between worker honeybees. 2. There is a general tendency for food to pass from the older to the younger workers of a colony, although there is a considerable passage of food in the opposite direction. Younger bees generally receive food more frequently than they give it. 3. As worker bees grow older, the mean ages of the bees that feed them and to whom they give food also increase. 4.
