Control of bovine gastrointestinal nematode parasites using pellets of the nematode-trapping fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium Ciência Rural
Araújo,Jackson Victor de; Guimarães,Marcos Pezzi; Campos,Artur Kanadani; Sá,Nilo Chaves de; Sarti,Priscilla; Assis,Rafaela Carolina Lopes.
The viability of a formulation of the fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium associated with ivermectin was evaluated for the biological control of bovine gastrointestinal nematode parasites. Four groups of five calves each were placed in pastures with a stocking rate of 1.6 animal/hectare. In group 1 (control), the calves did not receive any treatment. In group 2, each animal received 20g of pellets of M. thaumasium orally twice a week during a six-month period that began with the onset of the rainy season (October 23, 2000). In group 3, each animal received 20g of pellets of M. thaumasium orally twice a week during the same period as 2, as well as two strategic treatments with ivermectin (200 mcg/kg) on May 10, 2001 and July 5, 2001. In group 4, the animals...

Effects of mineral, organic, and biological fertilization on the establishment of Pochonia chlamydosporia var. catenulata (Kamyschko ex. Barron and Onions) Zare & Gams in a protected crop Rev. Protección Veg.
Charles,Nelson J; Arévalo,Jersys; Hernández Duquesne,Ailin; Martín Alonso,Nelson J; Hidalgo Díaz,Leopoldo.
The objective of this research work was to evaluate the effect of applying different doses of mineral fertilization, organic fertilization (worm humus) or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus hoi-like) separately or in combination on the establishment of the strain IMI SD 187 of P. chlamydosporia var. catenulata. The experiment was carried out using the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) hybrid HA-3108 in a greenhouse at «Los 3 Picos» farm in Havana, Cuba. Colonization of the soil and roots by the selected strain was assessed in each treatment. The number of P. chlamydosporia colony forming units in soil and roots was directly related to the application of arbuscular micorrhizal fungi and worm humus according to the Principal Component analysis and the...

Isoenzyme analysis of Arthrobotrys, a nematode-trapping fungus BJMBR
Araújo,J.V.; Junghans,T.G.; Alfenas,A.C.; Gomes,A.P.S..
Extraction and isoenzyme analysis of four isolates of Arthrobotrys including A. musiformis, A. robusta and A. conoides were conducted. Among the 14 enzymes studied by starch gel electrophoresis, using morpholine-citrate as gel/electrode buffer, the following nine enzymes showed interpretable banding patterns: <!-- $MVD$:face("Symbol") --><FONT FACE="Symbol">a</font>-esterase, fumarase, hexokinase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, leucine aminopeptidase, malate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucoisomerase. All isolates studied displayed typical isoenzyme phenotypes for each species. Two isolates of A. conoides differed in their <!-- $MVD$:face("Symbol") --><FONT...

Nematicidal activity of Paecilomyces marquandii proteases on infective larvae of Ancylostoma spp BABT
Genier,Hugo Leonardo André; Queiroz,José Humberto de; Braga,Fabio Ribeiro; Soares,Filippe Elias de Freitas; Araújo,Jackson Victor de; Pinheiro,Iara Rebouças.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the action of Paecilomyces marquandii proteases on Ancylostoma spp L3. White halos in the zymogram confirmed the proteolytic action. Difference (p <0.01) between the number of L3 in the differents groups was found, with 41.4% of reduction of Ancylostoma spp. L3 before 24 hours.

Predatory ability of Arthrobotrys musiformis and Monacrosporium thaumasium on Scutellonema bradys Scientia Agricola
Soares,Ana Cristina Fermino; Sousa,Carla da Silva; Coimbra,João Luiz; Machado,Gisele da Silva; Garrido,Marlon da Silva; Almeida,Nailson dos Santos.
Scutellonema bradys (Steiner &amp; LeHew) Andrassy is the most important yam nematode in the State of Bahia, Brazil, being responsible for the decay of yam tubers, known as dry rot disease. Nematode-trapping fungi are potential biocontrol agents against plant parasitic nematodes. The in vitro predatory ability of Arthrobotrys musiformis Drechsler and Monacrosporium thaumasium Drechsler on S. bradys was evaluated. The fungi were grown in PDA medium, than transferred to the center of Petri dishes with 2% agar plus water. After 14 days of the fungal cultures incubation, 150 nematodes were added to the dishes. For a period of 5 days, at 24-hour intervals, the number of captured nematodes was counted. Both fungi formed trapping structures of single ring and...

Predatory activity of Arthrobotrys oligospora and Duddingtonia flagrans on pre-parasitic larval stages of cyathostominae under different constant temperatures Ciência Rural
Santos,Clóvis de Paula; Padilha,Terezinha; Rodrigues,Maria de Lurdes de Azevedo.
The effect of different temperatures on the predatory activity of Arthrobotrys oligospora and Duddingtonia flagrans on the free-living larval stages of cyathostomes were evaluated in an experiment where feces of horses containing the parasites’ eggs were treated with these fungi and incubated under different constant temperatures (10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C and 30°C ). The results indicated that the optimum temperature for egg development was 25°C. At 10°C the number of L3 recovered was practically zero, and at 15°C and 20°C, the percentage of larvae recovered was less than 3% of the total number of eggs per gram of feces. When these cultures subsequently were incubated for an additional period of 14 days at 27°C, they allowed the development of L3. In all the...

Sporulation, radial growth and biomass production of A. robusta and M. thaumasium submitted to different methods of preservation BJM
Mota,Marcelo de Andrade; Campos,Artur Kanadani; Araújo,Jackson Victor.
Biological control is based on the use of microorganisms to combat populations of a specific pathogen. Nematophagous fungi have shown to be promising agents to combat nematode parasites of plants and animals. These organisms produce special structures along the hyphae, named traps, which are responsible for capturing and killing the nematode pre-parasitic stages. The growth of the isolates I31 of Arthrobotrys robusta and NF34a of Monacrosporium thaumasium was studied after submission to four different methods of preservation during eighteen months. The isolates were stored at 4ºC and cryopreserved with or without addition of cryoprotectants and stored in silica gel. The isolates did not present variation in radial growth when stored at 4ºC and frozen with...
