A Derbyshire screwstone (Mississippian) from the beach at Overstrand, Norfolk, eastern England Naturalis

A distinctive chert erratic pebble found on the beach at Overstrand, north Norfolk, eastern England, is a Derbyshire screwstone. Such cherts are typical of the Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) limestones of the southern Pennines (White Peak), over 200 km to the northwest. It was most probably transported by fluvial or glacial action during the Pleistocene and was recently disinterred by coastal erosion. The most diagnostic feature of screwstone cherts are the included mouldic crinoid ossicles, particularly columnals. Columnals of the monobathrid camerate crinoid Megistocrinus? globosus? Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov., a new mimosoid polyad species from the Neogene of Colorado Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana

Fossil mimosoid polyads have been recently recovered from Neogene deposits in the Colorado Basin, Argentina, and the new species Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov. is described, which is closely similar to polyads of species included in Acacia Miller subgenus Acacia Vassal. It is characterized by colporate apertures on the distal face of the pollen grains, a typical polyad of the subgenus Acacia. The new polyad species is very similar to those of the extant Acacia curvifructa Burkart. Comparing the habitat of subgenus Acacia extant species, the Acaciapollenites acaciae occurrence suggests drier and warmer paleoclimatic conditions than today for the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene in the Colorado Basin. Biochronostratigraphy and paleoenvironment analysis of Neogene deposits from the Pelotas Basin (well 2-TG-96-RS), Southernmost Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

This paper presents the integration of micropaleontological (palynology and foraminifera) and isotopic (87Sr/86Sr) analysis of a selected interval from the well 2-TG-96-RS, drilled on the onshore portion of the Pelotas Basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of eight samples of the section between 140.20 and 73.50 m in depth was selected for palynological analysis, revealing diversified and abundant palynomorph associations. In this study the insectivores from the Upper Aragonian and the Lower Vallesian of the Daroca-Villafeliche area in the Calatayud-Teruel Basin (Spain) are described and compared with related insectivore species from other European localities. The paleoecological significance of the insectivores is evaluated. The species described are: Galerix exilis, Galerix socialis, Desmanella crusafonti, Miosorex grivensis, and Crusafontina endemica. An attempt is made to separate G. exilis from G. socialis on the basis of size and morphology.

Comparison of Neogene low-crowned Hystrix species (Mammalia, Porcupines, Rodentia) from Europe, West and Southeast Asia Naturalis

The low-crowned Hystrix species known of the Neogene from Europe and Asia and some new finds from Shihuiba near Lufeng, South China, are compared on the basis of numerical data. The taxonomical allocation of the seven species recognised thus far is maintained. The occurrences of two coeval Eurasian late Turolian species is discussed. The material from Lufeng is described and allocated to Hystrix primigenia (Wagner, 1848), implicating an area of distribution of this species from S.E. Europe to S.E. Asia in the Turolian. Decapod crustaceans from the Neogene of the Caribbean: diversity, distribution and prospectus Naturalis

The Neogene decapod crustaceans are reviewed from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Anguilla, Barbados, Carriacou, Costa Rica, Cuba, Florida, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Tintamare Island, Trinidad and Venezuela. The most widely distributed taxa, both stratigraphically and geographically, are callianassids and Calappa (both with easily identifiable dactyli), and portunids. The latter include eleven genera in the study area; of these, Callinectes, Euphylax and Portunus are known from the Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene of the Caribbean. Delineating shallow Neogene deformation structures in northeastern Pará State using Ground Penetrating Radar Anais da ABC (AABC)

The geological characterization of shallow subsurface Neogene deposits in northeastern Pará State using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) revealed normal and reverse faults, as well as folds, not yet well documented by field studies. The faults are identified mostly by steeply-dipping reflections that sharply cut the nearby reflections causing bed offsets, drags and rollovers. The folds are recognized by reflections that are highly undulating, configuring broad concave and convex-up features that are up to 50 m wide and 80 to 90 ns deep. Fossil Chondrichthyans from the Upper Pliocene Horcón Formation, Valparaíso Region, central Chile RChHN

Twelve taxa of chondrichthyan fossils from strata assigned to the Upper Pliocene of the Horcón Formation, Valparaiso region, central Chile, are described and prior records paleobiogeography and paleoenvironmental implications are discussed. The fauna includes Callorhinchus sp., Heterodontus sp., Carcharodon carcharias, Isurus oxyrinchus, Galeorhinus galeus, Carcharhinus brachyurus, Hexanchus griseus, Squatina sp., Pristiophorus sp., Rajidae, Dasyatidae and Myliobatidae. This is one of the most diverse chondrichthyan associations of the Late Neogene of Chile and the rest of South America.

Lower Miocene echinoderms of Jamaica, West Indies Naturalis

Despite being diverse globally, Miocene echinoids are poorly known from Jamaica. Moderately diverse echinoids and other echinoderms have been identified mainly from fragmentary specimens collected from chalks and mass-flow deposits of the Lower Miocene Montpelier Formation, White Limestone Group, near Duncans, parish of Trelawny. This locality has yielded the most diverse association of fossil echinoderms known from the Miocene of Jamaica, including at least ten species in four classes. Miocene fern spores and pollen grains from the Solimões Basin, Amazon Region, Brazil Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT This work documents fern spores and pollen grains (miospores) recovered from rocks of the Solimões Formation (Solimões Basin), their botanical affinities, ecology and distribution in the Miocene of the Amazon Region. The assemblage of miospores is well preserved and diverse. They are identified, illustrated and assigned to the ten families of ferns and 22 families of spermatophytes. All miospores were identified to the taxonomic level of species except for two taxa (Perinomonoletes and Podocarpidites). The families Pteridaceae and Arecaceae were most representative of ferns and spermatophytes, respectively. Miocene to Pleistocene clay mineral sedimentation on the New Jersey shelf ArchiMer

The clay fraction of sediments drilled at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites 1071 and 1072 is composed of variable proportions of chlorite, illite, smectite. kaolinite, vermiculite and mixed-layers such as illite/vermiculite (I/V) and chlorite/vermiculite (C/V). Miocene and Pliocene climates allowed formation of vermiculite and kaolinite. Pleistocene clay sedimentation was characterized by abundant chlorite and illite resulting from increasing erosion of the crystalline rocks outcropping in northern areas (e.g. Canadian Shield) developed under glacial climate. Neogene fossil tonnoidean gastropods of Indonesia Naturalis

Tonnoidean gastropods in K. Martin’s and other collections in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden (and a few other minor collections) are reidentified and classified. The resulting fauna of 99 species is very similar to that of the Indo-West Pacific today, 70% of species still inhabiting the Indonesian region. Paleoecological and paleoenvironmental implications of a high-density Chondrites association in slope deposits of the Neogene Santo Domingo Formation, Valdivia, south-central Chile Ameghiniana

Neogene marine strata of the Santo Domingo Formation crop out in the vicinity of Valdivia, south-central Chile (40°S, 73°W). The succession is characterized by dark-gray sandy siltstone with abundant Chondrites isp. The occurrence of this ichnotaxon and lower-bathyal benthic foraminifers is consistent with a slope depositional environment. The abundance of Chondrites and the low ichnodiversity reveal poorly oxygenated bottom waters. The Santo Domingo Formation most likely accumulated in fault-controlled, intraslope silled minibasins, which werw formed during a major event of Neogene subsidence of the Chilean margin.

A reassessment of extinct species, fourteen in all, found in Europe and attributed to Calappilia has been carried out. For each species a short diagnosis is provided, and where necessary, its systematic position is reconsidered. Calappilia dacica lyrata is here elevated to species rank, while C. mainii is reassigned to Stenodromia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 and C. sexdentata is considered to be a nomen nudum. Photographs are provided of all type specimens available to us; most of these had so far been known only from (partially inaccurate) line drawings. For the first time, well-preserved chelipeds are described for the genus, having been found in articulation with a carapace of C. dacica.

On the basis of several carapaces, a new species of xanthid crab, Etisus evamuellerae, is described from the Middle Miocene of the Vienna (Austria) and Great Hungarian basins. It differs from the coeval xanthids, Xantho moldavicus and Pilodius vulgaris, in having a distinctly protruding front and comparatively longer carapace. Contrary to those two species, the new one makes up for just a small percentage in the decapod crustacean assemblages studied.

All squat lobsters of the families Galatheidae, Munididae and Munidopsidae from the Miocene of the Central Paratethys are reviewed taxonomically. Based on additional observations emended diagnoses are provided for Agononida cerovensis and Galathea weinfurteri, from the Lower and Middle Miocene, respectively. Munidopsis is represented by two species in the study area; additional data for M. lieskovensis from the Lower Miocene of Slovakia are presented and a new species, M. palmuelleri, from the Middle Miocene of Slovenia is erected. Implications for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions are briefly discussed for each taxon.

Tectonic and sedimentary architecture of the Karukéra spur: A record of the Lesser Antilles fore-arc deformations since the Neogene ArchiMer

The Karukéra spur is an easternmost submerged rise of the Lesser Antilles fore-arc in the Guadeloupe archipelago, culminating about 4000 m above the fore-arc basin 150 km west of the deformation front. The analysis of 3500 km 2D high-resolution multichannel seismic reflection and multibeam bathymetric data, and the study of 14 core samples, allow for the first time to reconstruct its sedimentary anatomy and tectonic evolution. Seven seismic units (Us1 to Us7) are evidenced, organized into four major depositional sequences separated by erosional surfaces. Units Us1 to Us4 thicken to the south-southeast on the spur.
