Analysis and quantification of flavonoidic compounds from Portuguese olive (Olea europeae L.) leaf cultivars IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Meirinhos, J.; Silva, B.M.; Valentão, P.; Seabra, R.M.; Pereira, J.A.; Dias, A.; Andrade, P.B.; Ferreres, F..
Twenty three samples of 18 Portuguese olive leaf cultivars were analysed by a reversed-phase HPLC/DAD procedure and eight flavonoidic compounds were identified and quantified (luteolin 7,40-O-diglucoside, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, rutin, apigenin 7-O-rutinoside, luteolin 40-O-glucoside, luteolin, apigenin and diosmetin). Luteolin 7,40-O-diglucoside and luteolin 40-O-glucoside were identified by HPLC/DAD/MS/MS – ESI. The studied olive leaf samples showed a common phenolic pattern, in which luteolin 40-O-glucoside was almost always the major compound

Chemometric classification of several olive cultivars from Trás-os-Montes region (Northeast of Portugal) using artificial neural networks. IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Peres, António M.; Baptista, Paula; Malheiro, R.; Dias, L.G.; Bento, Albino; Pereira, J.A..
This work aimed to use artificial neural networks for fruit classification according to olive cultivar, as a tool to guarantee varietal authenticity. So, 70 samples, each one containing, in general, 40 olives, belonging to the six most representative olive cultivars of Trás-os-Montes region (Cobrançosa, Cordovil, Madural, Negrinha de Freixo, Santulhana and Verdeal Transmontana) were collected in different groves and during four crop years. Five quantitative morphological parameters were evaluated for each fruit and endocarp, respectively. In total, ten biometrical parameters were used together with a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network allowing the implementation of a classification model. Its performance was compared with that obtained using...

Cover crops for the sustainability of rainfed olive orchards IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Bacelar, Eunice; Correia, Carlos; Santos, D.; Moutinho-Pereira, J.M.; Gonçalves, B.; Brito, C.; Ferreira, H.; Rodrigues, M.A..
Olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is present in large areas of mainland PortugaL predominantly in less-favored regions. In spite of the fact that irrigated areas are currently increasing, most of the olive orchards are still cultivated under rainfed conditions. The success of olive farming under rainfed conditions is mainly due to the high capacity of olive tree to develop anatomical, physiological and biochemical drought resistance mechanisms. Nevertheless, the productivity is low. We propose cover cropping to control soil erosion, improve soil quality and fertility of rainfed oli\'e orchards. Cover cropping is widespread in fruit farming in temperate climates and in irrigated olive orchards, where water is not a limiting resource. The effects of cover...

Cultivar effect on the phenolic composition and antioxidant potential of stoned table olives IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Malheiro, R.; Sousa, A.; Casal, S.; Bento, Albino; Pereira, J.A..
Stoned green table olives ‘‘alcaparras’’ prepared from five different cultivars (Cv. Cobrançosa, Madural, Negrinha de Freixo, Santulhana and Verdeal Transmontana) were investigated concerning their phenolic composition and antioxidant potential. From each cultivar, five independent lots were prepared. The phenolic profile was determined by HPLC/DAD at 280 nm, and antioxidant potential measured using the reducing power and scavenging effect on DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radicals assays. Twelve phenolic compounds were identified, being hyrdoxytyrosol the most abundant one, followed by verbascoside and tyrosol. Cv. Cobrançosa and Santulhana reported higher content of phenolic compounds, with 165.76 and 163.66 mg/kg of fresh ‘‘alcaparras’’ table...

Evaluación genética de clones de olivo en el desierto de Atacama, Chile Agrociencia
Mora,Freddy; Tapia,Francisco; Ibacache,Antonio; Nunes-Martins,Elias; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.

Moutinho-Pereira, José; Gonçalves, Berta; Bacelar, Eunice; Ferreira, H.; Rodrigues, M.A.; Correia, Carlos.

Phenolic profiles of Portuguese olive fruits (Olea europaea L.): influence of cultivar and geographical origin IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Vinha, A.F.; Ferreres, F.; Silva, B.M.; Valentão, P.; Gonçalves, Artur; Pereira, J.A.; Oliveira, M.B.P.P.; Seabra, R.M.; Andrade, P.B..
The phenolic compounds present in 29 samples of olive fruits were analysed by reversed-phase HPLC/DAD and/or HPLC-DAD/ ESI-MS/MS. All samples were collected during the normal picking period for olive oil production, in north and central Portugal, and were obtained from 18 different olive cultivars. Two different extraction methods were necessary for the complete quantification of phenolic compounds, a methanolic extraction and an extraction which included a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleaning step. The analyses showed that all samples presented a similar profile, which included at least six identified phenolic compounds: hydroxytyrosol, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, oleuropein, rutin, apigenin 7-O-glucoside and luteolin. Several samples also contained...

Sensory analysis of olive oil Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Villa, Fabíola; Silva, Daniel Fernandes.
The sensory analysis of olive oil constitutes a fundamental tool in determining the commercial grade of oil. To obtain this certification, the oil must pass through the analysis of a group with 8 to 12 people, trained and qualified by regulatory bodies, called ‘panel test’, which will feature the organoleptic properties of the oil, setting its commercial classification. Sensory analysis has significant importance to judge the final product quality. These tests are performed in specific laboratories, other organizations, or if the manufacturer sells large amounts of oil in committees within the company. Olive oil, according to Brazilian standard, can be classified in a virgin olive oil, olive oil, refined olive oil and olive pomace. The tests performed in...

Visual symptoms and nutritional deficiencies in olive trees under subjected to nutrient deprivation Agronomy
Pio, Rafael; Souza, Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Coelho, Viviane Amaral Toledo; Rodas, Cleber Lázaro; Silva, Inêz Pereira da; Melo, Evaldo Tadeu de.
Brazil is one of the largest importers of olive (Olea europaea L.) products, being the fourth largest importer of olive oil and the fifth of olives. In recent decades the introduction and growing of olive cultivars less chilling requirement in the South and Southeast made viable the olives production in the country. On the other hand, there are still shortages of information about the management of this crop in our country, especially in relation to studies about the nutritional needs of the olive tree, grown in subtropical regions, and it may enable advances in productivity of this fruit. The aim of study was to evaluate the growth, dry matter production and nutritional status of the olive tree under the effect of the omission of nutrients as well as...
