Aspects technologie pêche de la campagne JUVESU 99 ArchiMer
Meillat, Marc.
IFREMER's "Fishing Technology" team participated in the JUVESU99 campaign from 1 to 13 September. The equipment tested was the same as that from the SURFET99 campaign, a pelagic trawl with a surface area of 47.75 x 43.75 with netting of 500 metres of cables, 120-metre arms of equal length above and below, and a ballast of 40 kg to each wing tip The pelagic panels used were panels from the company TYBORON of "type 8" lent through the intermediary of the Kéroman company, Dock et Entrepôts Maritimes. The trawl's collection of balls consisted of a cluster of ten 11-litre balls on each upper wing tip, and a cluster of five 11-litre balls on each side of the square. The total collection of balls was therefore thirty 11-litre balls along the back rope of the...

Biogeography of Micronekton Assemblages in the Natural Park of the Coral Sea ArchiMer
Receveur, Aurore; Vourey, Elodie; Lebourges-dhaussy, Anne; Menkes, Christophe; Menard, Frederic; Allain, Valerie.
Mesopelagic resources are central to the ecosystem but remain poorly studied mainly due to the lack of observations. This paper investigates the assemblages of micronekton organisms and their habitat in the Natural Park of the Coral Sea around New Caledonia (southwest Pacific) using data from 141 pelagic trawls. A total of 67,130 micronekton individuals (fish, crustaceans, and mollusks) were collected with 252 species identified among 152 genus and 76 families. In the analyses, we focused on 22 species; each were present in more than 33 trawls (i.e., in more than 25% of the total number of trawls) and studied their spatial distribution and vertical dynamic behavior. Community structure was investigated through region of common profile (RCP), an innovative...

Le chalutage pélagique et notes sur ce chalutage avec panneaux Suberkrub ArchiMer
Portier, Marcel.
Following the trials conducted in 1958/59 by German trawlers, the I.S.T.P.M. tested for the first time, in 1960, on the Roselys, a 120 CV oceanographic research vessel, a pelagic trawl using a boat equipped with a headrope sounder. The trawl was a double panel trawl with an opening perimeter of 500 80 mm meshes. The lateral opening was made through hydrodynamic Süberkrüb doors of 1,7 sq. meters and 130 kg. Finally, an Atlas Werke netzsonde whose oscillator was set on a platform towed behind a headrope, was transmitting information about the opening and sinkage depth of the trawl to the bridge. The cable only had one conductor and the answer was transmitted through the water. Since then, new cables with two coaxial conductors have been used and results are...

Le répulsif à cétacés : performances acoustiques requises ArchiMer
Le Gall, Yves; Origne, Laurent; Scalabrin, Carla; Morizur, Yvon.
Acoustic deterrent devices could be an appealing solution to tackle accidental cetacean by-catches in pelagic trawls or in fishing net gears. The bibliographical data on two species (Harbour porpoise and bottlenosed dolphin) have been analyzed in terms of audiogram, discomfort noise level that could lead to behavioural changes, sensory fatigue, and threshold for permanent hearing injuries. It is possible, on the basis of the above data, to characterize an efficient annoyance sound threshold which is not harmful to the species to be protected. Taking into account the properties of the sound waves propagation in the marine environment and according to the required range, the minimal amplitude of the repulsive sound to emit is proposed. Accordingly, the...

Observation en bassin du chalut pélagique a recouvrement de ventre ArchiMer
Meillat, Marc.
Following a mission made by J.P. George on board trawls testing tunny fishing by using a pelagic "boeuf" trawl in September 1987 (because these tests were very promising), IFREMER became interested in designing a trawl more adapted to this type of fishing, known as surface fishing, it was therefore decided to create a mock-up to scale of the trawl that folds down from the bottom.

The French anchovy fishery ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Masse, Jacques; Villalobos, Hector.
The french fishery of anchovy is divided in two groups defined by gears : purse seine and pelagic trawl. The average length of these vessels is about 20m. This fleet is very opportunistic : all trawlers are using several trawls during the year, to catch sometimes bass, tuna, hake, or scampi, and purse seine are mainly fishing sardine. Each year, the main anchovy catches are provided by pair trawlers. Purse seiners operate often in coastal areas (<10 nautical miles); trawlers may operate until 50 nautical miles offshore but are banned inside the three miles coastal zone. The pair trawlers may operate from Basque country to western Channel according to fish availability. Purse seiners usually stay around their home harbour.

The French sardine fishery ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan.
This approach of the French sardine fishery shows mainly that pelagic trawlers are targeting less and less sardine, year after year. In an assessment approach, it would be necessary to define an estimation of fishing effort, but it will be very difficult. We are able to compt the number of fishing days, but not the time of fishing (or number of shoots for example for purse seiners) or time of searching schools. So, accessibility and catchability could be certainly more accurate than the fishing effort for assesment purposes.
