A multivariate approach to explore the genetic variability in the F2 segregating population of a tomato second cycle hybrid JBAG
Cabodevila,V.G; Picardi,L.A; Pratta,G.R.
Segregating progeny from the tomato Second Cycle Hybrids (SCH) that were obtained from crossing RIL (Recombinant Inbred Lines) allows the detection of new genetic combinations that could increase genetic variability in F2 populations. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate eleven tomato quality traits in a segregating F2 population obtained from a SCH and, then, to characterize the molecular diversity by six AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) primer combinations. Different multivariate analyses were used to assess the degree of concordance among these two approaches to detect genetic variability. Sixty-nine F2 plants were obtained by selfing the SCH (ToUNR18xToUNR1). The parental RIL were derived from an interspecific cross between...

A short review: Comparisons of high-throughput phenotyping methods for detecting drought tolerance Scientia Agricola
Kim,Jaeyoung; Kim,Ki-Seung; Kim,Yoonha; Chung,Yong Suk.
ABSTRACT Drought is a major threat worldwide for crop production, especially due to the rapid climate changes. Current drought solutions involve improving irrigation system, rainwater harvesting, damming, cloud seeding, and changes of cultivation methods. Despite effective, each solution has economic, environmental, and temporal drawbacks. Among all solutions, the most effective, inexpensive and manageable method is the use of drought-tolerant cultivars via plant breeding. However, conventional plant breeding is a time-consuming and laborious task, especially for phenotypic data acquisition of target traits of numerous progenies. High-throughput phenotyping (HTP) is a recently developed method and has potential to overcome the mentioned issues. HTP offers...

Access Issues for Plant Breeders in an Increasingly Privatized World AgEcon
Lindner, Robert K..
There is a growing trend to widespread privatisation of crop breeding, and there are grounds for expecting this trend to continue and even to accelerate. Possible consequences for Australian grain growers and the national interest of much greater private sector involvement in plant breeding are explored. Growing privatisation and commercialisation of plant breeding will lead to increased competition between plant breeders. While this increased competition has been at least partly driven by the potential for value creation, it also is likely to enhance value creation from plant breeding so long as there is adequate continuing investment in the capacity for plant breeding, and more particularly in productivity enhancing enabling technology. In the event of...

Acylsugars in tomato leaflets confer resistance to the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta Meyr Scientia Agricola
Resende,Juliano Tadeu Vilela de; Maluf,Wilson Roberto; Faria,Marcos Ventura; Pfann,Alessandra Zawadzki; Nascimento,Ildon Rodrigues do.
Acylsugars present in the accession 'LA716' of Lycopersicon pennellii play an important role in the resistance to Tuta absoluta. This paper investigates the possible association between the resistance to T. absoluta and the acylsugar contents in F2 and F2BC1 tomato plants derived from the interspecific crossing between L. esculentum 'TOM-584' and L. pennellii 'LA716'. From the F2 population, four high acylsugars and one low acylsugars plants were selected and tested for Tuta absoluta resistance along with parental lines TOM-584 and LA-716, and with the checks TOM-600 (high 2-tridecanone line with resistance to T. absoluta) and TOM-556 (low acylsugar line). The genotypes were tested under natural field infestation and were evaluated for overall plant...

Adoption of Maize Production Technologies in the Coastal Lowlands of Kenya AgEcon
Wekesa, E.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Danda, Milton Kengo; De Groote, Hugo.
Maize is the major food crop grown in the coastal region of Kenya and constitutes a major component of the diet of the population in the region. However, average yields are far below the potential for the region and low production levels create serious food deficits. Over the years, new technologies have been introduced but adoption has remained low, especially for fertilizer. This paper examined current maize-farming practices and technological and socioeconomic factors that influenced adoption in the Kilifi and Kwale Districts of the Coast Province, that together account for half of maize production in the region. The study found low adoption levels for improved maize varieties and technology, especially fertilizer, among farmers in the area. Farmers...

Martuscello,Janaina Azevedo; Jank,Liana; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Cunha,Daniel de Noronha Figueiredo Vieira da.
The objective of this study was to select superior genotypes in half-sib populations obtained from crosses between sexual plants and apomictic accessions. The experiment also proposed to compare among and within family and combined selection strategies. Ten plots of sexual plants were randomly distributed among 230 plots of apomictic accessions. After natural pollination, seeds of each sexual plant constituted a half-sib family. Thirty plants of each female progenitor were evaluated in a randomized block design experiment, with five plants per plot and five replications. Five evaluation harvests were made in the rainy seasons and two in the dry seasons of all plants. The production and quality characteristics were evaluated. The selection criteria used...
